With the GDC shaping up with appearances from key industry bigwigs like Phil Harrison and Shigeru Miyamoto, this report will be focusing on the event's more charitable side. Interactive Studio Management (ISM) and the CMP game groups have just announced that this year's GDC will be hosting a charity poker tournament - an official first for the conference.

The tournament will be inviting 120 players within the gaming industry via invitations and silent bids, with a suggested US$ 100.00 donation being requested from competing players. Competition prices will include offerings from industry sponsors, with proceedings from the tourney going to the Starlight Starbright Children's Foundation.

"We have found that having fun, and interactive gaming in particular, is an effective way to help children cope with a serious illness. We are honored to have been selected to benefit from this fundraiser," said Paula Van Ness, the Starlight Starbright Children's Foundation CEO. The poker competition is scheduled for March 6 at 9:30 p.m. at the Marriott Hotel, Golden Gate rooms C2-C3.

ROCK N ROLL

Rock N Roll was a mixture of rhythm and blues which was first used by a man

named Alan Freed in 1951. He was a clever Cleveland disk jockey that came up with the

song “My Baby Rocks Me with a Steady Roll”. March 31, 1952 was the first Rock

Concert called the Moondog Coronation Ball which was $1.75 at the door to get in. This

is the history and now for the fun, THE FUTURE and what will come to be a very

popular trend of many teens.

Elvis Presley really kicked Rock N Roll into high gear for America. Elvis was

born January 8, 1935 in Mississippi and in September 1955 his record Mystery Train hit

#1. In 1956 he filmed his first movie Love Me Tender which made 1 million dollars in

the first three days then on March 24, 1958 Elvis decided to pay his country back by

joining the Army. Later on August 16, 1977 Elvis was found dead by his girlfriend in

their bathroom. The medical examiners determined that his death was caused by drug

abuse.

Parents didn’t want their kids to join the armed forces so they invented allowance

and free time after school. That’s when they could buy their own records and radios the

rock industry grew. In the late 50’s girl groups appeared but were not popular and the

disappointing era of the girl groups ended in the late 60’s. Surprisingly enough though

before their era ended in the mid 60’s garage bands were growing in popularity and

strength. There were very many that were good and some even had some hard hits.

The early 1970’s in New York a new form of Rock was being produced, Punk

Rock. Punk Rock was defined as short aggressive songs that had angry messages. People

like Patti Smith, the Velvet Underground, and the New York Dolls had started this new

form of Rock N Roll. In the mid 80’s there was a dramatic change, people mixed guitar

rock with punk and metal and called the nasty combination Grunge. People think that it

was started by Nirvana in 91, but that only kicked off the movement, what really started

or who I should say were bands like the Melvins and Mudhoney.

One of my favorite bands Guns N Roses started out in LA in 1985. Their style

incorporated punk, blues, and thrash rock into one. They became big when they released

their 1987 album Appetite For Destruction. Many accuse Axl Rose of racism but he

denied that accusation by telling the fans that their drummer was half black and later

came out with Welcome To The Jungle for the upcoming Dirty Harry movie. Sadly in

1996 Slash quit the band and the following year so did the others.

1973 ACDC was formed and got their name from a label that Angus’s sister saw

on a sewing machine. In 1974 they released their first single Can I Sit Next To You Girl?

A week later the drummer Colin Burgess collapsed on stage and was immediately fired.

Luckily George Young was there to take his spot permanently. In April of 74 Angus’

sister asked him to wear a school uniform to a concert which then gave the band a flashy

image. Then in June of 86 their single Who Made Who peaked on the US billboards at

#33.

Lynyrd Skynyrd first started out in 1964 and was originally called My Backyard.

The name Lynyrd Skynyrd came from a High School Gym teacher Leonard Skinner. It

was a sad day for the members of Lynyrd Skynyrd when their plane crashed on October

20, 1977 due to the pilots miscalculating how much fuel they needed. They sold over 25

million records in the past 25 years. There are only two members left now and they came

out with one of their greatest hits Sweet Home Alabama.

Nirvana was founded in Washington in 1987. They exploded in popularity due to

their single Smells Like Teen Spirit. Kurt Kobain found himself as being the spokesman

of Generation X and later performed on MTV unplugged in 1993. Kurt Kobain died in

1994 due to a drug overdose. Prior to that they released a album which topped the radio
