So Apogee's got new Duke Nukem titles in development for the Nintendo DS and Sony PSP. Big whoop, right? I mean, we've been waiting for Duke Nukem Forever for... well, for forever. It looks like Apogee's really hunkered down and made sure the new handheld Duke Nukem games don't turn into vaporware though.

The company recently showed both the DS and PSP versions of Duke Nukem Critical Mass (the first in the Duke Nukem handheld trilogy) off at the 2009 Game Developers Conference. According to OhGizmo!, the game's currently somewhere between alpha and pre-alpha, so keep in mind that it's still an early build when you see these screenshots:

It doesn't really look that impressive, but again, it's an early build. While there storyline of the DS and PSP versions are the same, the PSP version is rated Mature and features a Duke that's more similar to the one in the earlier games. The Teen-rated DS version, meanwhile, will have a more watered-down Duke Nukem experience.

Both versions of Duke Nukem Critical Mass (as well as the other games in the trilogy) should offer about 12+ hours of gameplay spread over 36 levels. The first game is currently slated for release sometime during the end of 2009.

Well the Nintendo 64 Duke Nukem was kindof watered down too compared to the PSX versions.

I'm hopoing it'll be like Duke Nukem: Time To Kill but better.

Do we know if the PSP version is going to be a more mature yet basically clone version of the DS one, or will utilize PSPs full processing power?

» Why?

Why do people care about Duke Nukem? Beyond nostalgia I can't think of any reason to appreciate this new installment in the series.

» same here...

I guess people who've had played the game before just misses it a lot. And for those who haven't I guess they'll be curious now as to what is it and what's in it. All in all good thing it's not becoming one of those vaporware. It's finally good to see it coming.

» Duke Nukem Rocks

I personally loved Duke N, I remember back in the year 2k I used to play networked with 7 other guys, even my boss played all the time. I still have the screenshots and the sound waves. I hope the PSP version is as good as the pc version I played. "It's time to Kick ass and chew bubble gum, and I'm all out of gum" hehehehhe
