Games are evil - Gundam creator

This we expected from Jack Thompson. But from the Gundam creator? This certainly brings a whole lot of disconnect to me. Yoshiyuki Tomino, creator of the most famous sci-fi giant robot (complete with his own posse) Gundam, believes that "video games are evil." Why? Because it's killing our planet. Among many other things, I can only suppose. I think he must have heard of the failed suicide/ arson episode in Japan because mommy took out the guy's Gundam collection to trash.

Seriously. According to him:

[Gaming] is not a type of activity that provides any support to our daily lives, and all these consoles are just consuming electricity! Let's say we have about three billion people on this planet wasting their time, bringing no productivity at all. Add 10 billion more people, and what would happen to our planet? Video games are assisting the death of our planet.

He doesn't stop there, though. Given the problem posed to us by gaming, as according to him, he offers a solution, and that is to challenge developers to improve their output.

The video game industry is now 30 years old. It is just the right time for the business' company structure and many other elements to become solid. But at the same time, it is also a point where there is uncertainty in its future. In order to overcome this uncertainty, it is important for experienced creators such as myself to talk about their experiences.

You have to find the median -- that games are not evil, perhaps not necessarily good either, but something that can be considered a pastime. What would make people enjoy a game? How do you make them feel like it is not just a waste of time?

He does make sense, now that he's expounded on his premise of gaming as evil. If you want to read up on the rest of his position regarding this matter, head over to the source link below. In the meantime, we can only wish we also had this giant Gundam to protect us from the world's evil forces.

» Games don't provide any support to our daily lives?

Last I saw Gundam didn't add any support to our daily lives? On the other hand video games can provide a lot of things from learning your ABCs with those ridiculous child games to telling great stories with some of them making an impact in people's lives changing their views on the world. All in all games is what makes Japan a ton of it's money so if I were you I would STFU and laugh as all the white people throw their money at your feet? and last I check it is also the reason why you milk Gundam for what it's worth you get to milk fanboys of their wallet until its dry by selling your trading card, GUNDAM VIDEO GAMES, collector DVDs oh and since it's Gundam those build it yourself models and of course the 100s of different Gundam animes there are.

I need to take a pilgrimage to Japan to see that gundam. As for Yoshiyuki Tomino's comments, you have to remember, he's really old.

You freaking made Gundam. Gj with that. Like watching anime is any better. I like both and can care less of what this guy thinks.

Unless that life sized Gundam in Japan comes to life and goes on a rampage i really don't think video games will kill our planet.. but secretly i'd actually like to see that happen.

If games are evil then your cartoons are evil too the 2 of them got violence and to watch your toons we got 2 waist energy too dont you think! lol what a selfrighteous gerk.

By his statements he should consider all forms of entertainment evil and a waste of time, including watching fictional robots fight each other.

I'm pretty sure if people weren't playing games, they'd find some other way to damage the environment. Besides, how is Gundam anime any safer to the environment? Watching TV uses electricity. I'm pretty sure that giant Gundam also uses quite a bit of electricity. Also, games have positive effects, from puzzle games to RPGs and FPS's, but becoming obsessive and playing games non-stop is a bad thing. At least there's some validity to what this guy is saying.

"How do you make them feel like it is not just a waste of time?"

How are they a waste of time?

maybe people should be wasting their life doing something they dont enjoy for paper instead?

Truth is, hes lucky enough to be doing something he enjoys and gets payed for it.. so it easy for him to say rubbish like that

but the environment? ***** off!

the only reason so many care is because the influential people are making money off of it and its in their interest to tell us its our fault!

You can bet your arm they wouldn't give a toss if there was no money in it and it wouldn't so widely accepted that its us causing it.

by haru3173 - 2009-09-06 20:56
» lol what a hypocrite

There are few gundam games in the consoles and who do you think the publishers/devs need to ask for license to make the game? The creator of gundam himself.

Watching animes consumes time also and electricy not just gaming. And how much electricity does that lifesize gundam consume anyway.

"

I know I will be flamed, and I know I will be told I am stupid, but here I go.

I understand this comment. In fact, I AGREE with it. Maybe not the beginning,

but rather, the whole rest of it.

"all these consoles are just consuming electricity!"

Definitely agree with that. I mean, in a PHYSICAL FACTOR, that is ALL games do. Just eat electricity. I don't care what you say, or how they are entertainment, that DOESN'T MATTER, In a PHYSICAL FORM: It only eats electricity. That's all it does, in a physical form of course.

But in a mental form, as stated here:

"

You have to find the median -- that games are not evil, perhaps not necessarily good either, but something that can be considered a pastime. What would make people enjoy a game? How do you make them feel like it is not just a waste of time?

"

Mentally, a game that can overall, make what the world thinks about games, change.

A game, that isn't amazing by ANY form of the word. It doesn't have a storyline, nor any main characters.

The online multiplayer isn't in depth. All it does, is connect you to another player, to take the single player, and turn it into a two on two game.

In fact, the above statement COMPLETELY opens up what he is talking about.

The fact is, in his standpoint, games are consuming electricity. That's It. And while it is fun, it is not doing ***** for our environment.

So, he says, why don't we make a game that EVERYONE loves. Something that EVERYONE can play.

Not like a casual game, nor a hardcore game. Something more along the lines of a sport. Something that EVERYONE will be able to understand.

Perhaps, a very new conceptual game,

Or maybe, a game that has been used in the past.

Think, MMO, - RPG, -weapons, -Rules.

You can fly, dance, every building is enterable.

THAT. Is a super game. Something that isn't Amazing by ANY sense of the word, but can get people to do ONE THING.

And this, is the MAJOR point he is trying to make. I mean MAJOR.

The one thing, he wants people to do, is:

COMMUNICATE

Communication is the SOUL of humanity. Think about it, without communication, we wouldn't be anywhere right now.

From the beginning of time, humanity has spoken to each other.

Either from voice, to phone, to TV, to internet. It is our main instinct. Humanity knows that we need it. People all ways love communication. It gives them knowledge, and understanding.

And, don't start crying, saying "Hey, How about online gaming, like Live, and Playstation Network?". Because those aren't the same. Sure, you are talking. But half the time, its things that are not about the world around you. The REAL world.

He wants a game, that reminds us of OUR world. A game, that would help US communicate. Communicate about EVERYTHING.

A game, that brings up values, daily life, and communication all together.

And he is correct.

while you may HATE the idea of it,

It definitely an idea that should be the basis of making a game.

But hey, what do I know? I am just the 5,000 pound whale-shark on the floor.

if your playing a game, then your probably at home sitting on your ass...instead of driving your tricked out gas guzzler of an SUV, no more global warming...

Master Chef,

Seems your mouth drops farther than your balls.

If you thought it wrong, then tell me why.

Other than being a giant jack ass, and an obvious troll, you are simply being a smothering dumb ass.

And popmchnex, I agree. I killed so many little girls while playing that game, I felt *****ing insane.

But then I just lit some dude on fire and decided it was ok.

» In the future

Everything will be automated and run by computers, so sitting on your arse playing on computer could be seen as preparation for the future, and we could end up the most valuable members of society.

But he's gonna allow dozens of Gundam games to be created. And he's gonna pretend anime/manga is any better than playing video games.

Going by his logic, anything that makes you happy is killing our planet. He also seems to have a dream where humanity continuing to exist is a good thing, or acting like the Earth will end while all of us are still on it.

He's just a deluded commoner, pay him no mind.

For all those making the the comments, "Well anime consumes time and electricity."

I say that anime at the "least" only consumes 30 minutes out of every other week while video games can consume a whole week for those that don't have a job or are still living with mommy/daddy.

This can instantly be turned around for those die-hard fanatics of anime who only watch anime and go to cosplay parties.

Honestly he made a statement, it's not like any of you @$$holes will make him change his mind about it.

that's funny coming from someone who's had quite a few games on the market. I'd probably respect his opinion, were it not for the fact that he's being a hypocrite.

by lavino - 2009-09-07 09:34
» It's not about changing his mind...

It's freedom of speech. If he has his freedom to made a stupid statement we also have the freedom to express how stupid we think he is. He can think like that for eternity for all I care.

by yoshi314 - 2009-09-07 17:24
» hypocrite?

so if i understood correctly :

if you hear it from someone involved with game production - you call him a hypocrite.

but if you hear it from someone with no game experience at all (not even a gamer) - you say he does not know what is he talking about? where is that golden place of credibility?

by saying games do not provide support to your daily life means that playing games will not give you a better job. there is little benefit from games. it does not help you with your life.

you waste a lot of money, you waste a lot of time (well, that depends on a person). do you somehow get your money's worth back?

and logical/educational games are only a tool to HELP with education, not replace it. besides you do not learn that quickly from them, anyway.

by Digitus - 2009-09-07 19:33
» Bottom Line

Who the heck cares what the Gundam Chump has to say about anything? Other than suicidal fans of course. I know I don't. You can call games evil all you want but that wont make them any less fun maybe make them more fun for some people.

Besides, his crappy model toys and factories do their own harm to the environment. (And that life size gundam is a gigantic waste of resources).

its head rotating doesn't really count as 'moving' in my book

by Shatterdome - 2009-09-08 09:19
» yup...

I agree this dude is a huge hypocrite. If he is so worried about the environment he should take Gundam off the market.

Everything related to gundam uses electricty, paper, plastic and other resources....all taking it away from the environment.

Especially a life sized Gundam that constantly uses electricty just so it can move....if that is not a huge waste of resources, what is ?
