Gamers launch petition to un-ban Manhunt 2 |
In the aftermath of the UK ban on Manhunt 2 and the Adults Only rating slapped on to it by the ESRB, online whines and moans have echoed across forums questioning the move. One group decided to take it a notch higher with an online petition. We found the aforementioned petition in petitionspot.com and it does carry a lot of sensible arguments on why the developers and the governments must find a way to appease the consumers. Here's an excerpt from the text:
We know the AO rating carries with it some excessive weight. Weight which many retail chains will refuse to touch while allowing uncut versions of current musical acts, books, and even slasher movies to be released unchecked. And we see this as an inequality. The problem is, as the AO rating gets attached to games, no companies are willing to stand up against the perceived concept that a single year brings with it an understanding that somehow the average consumer did not possess before. The Adults Only rating carries with it a stigma of pornography which pushes many retail chains away. But we are tired of the double standard....
We are not irrational children. We are adults and as such, we should be allowed to choose our media. Be this through the purchasing of a copy of Saw Uncut on DVD, the latest Marilyn Manson CD, a copy of American Psycho on Paperback, or even an uncut copy of Manhunt 2 for the PSP, PS2, or Wii.
So far, the petition has seen a decent number of signatures from across the continents. If you think that the petition is a valid one and you would like to join in, you can do so by following the read URL and signing up.

IS DAT SUM ANGRY GAMERZ!?
What's with the Metroid Prime picture?
A METROID IS FINE TOO
Thats always nice.
This should remained banned, along with the other crap movies they mentioned like Saw....this is the kind of crap that this world doesn't need and would only be better without it.
I happen to like scaring myself. Its even more fun with friends! Why not unbann it? Just a few days ago i saw two episodes of alias on tv where anyone can just watch it with no warning (b/c the v-chip is not effective, its easy to get around it.) i saw an agent being blown up to pieces. then later, the criminals were sticking needles in some guy's eyes. and dont forget about girls gone wild commercial. THAT is no different than the game except with the game its the parents responsibility to buy it or not. not the video game business fault.
I am damn sure on that petition and rockstar is a respectable company that is having there and ower constutional rites violated. This is not rite and is illegal censership against a good company and nintendo with there stratigy to appeal to all ages appears to be a lie on the wii because adults have all the money and buy the colsol expecting there to be adult games for the adult gamers . I am almost 27 and it should be my choice to buy the game and its no 1 eleses rite to tell us the paying customer that wii can not period.
they should unban it since it violates the first amendment- the right to free speech. This prevents them from conveying the information in manhunt 2
idiots petitions dont work!
you actually think your right is being honored? bhahahahahahaha
get a clue this is the way life is.
Nobody cares about online petitions. They don't make a difference. If we (the gamers) want to make a difference, we need to voice our opinions by contacting the media. If it needs to be done, start support groups and pressure our governments into rethinking any ban. As for Sony and Nintendo... There isn't much we can to to make them allow the game to be distributed on "their" systems. It is sad that these companies would treat their adult gamers this way, it's as if they're implying that video games are for children only.
Think Duke Nukem 3d. The PC version and the N64 version were different. Room with flashing strippers on the PC turns into a outside loading dock on N64. Just have a console and a PC version.
senseless violence in video games has gone to an unreal level nowadays. irresponsible parents will mutilate human beings on tv, in front of their newborn children. think about it.
ever seen clockwork orange?
it worked for the BioShock Limited Edition.
U are the ffuukknn idiot biittcchh
I didn't sign it mostly because I couldn't care less about manhunt. I played the first one and didn't really like it so I doubt I will like the second one either. And second even if I did like the game online petitions don't work for the most part. Yea it worked for that Biohazzard thing but I suspect that they were going to make a limited edition version anyway and just used the petition as an excuse. Anyway I noticed that they're not many signatures considering that "everybody" is upset about it and whatnot. Heck there were more signatures on the free Paris Hilton petition and that one was funnier than this one.
MMK, this wasn't only banned because of the pr0n, it was way too violent. I mean, movies you see people killing people. In this, YOU are killing people. This is just... um... wrong. It's useless. This isn't a game. If there was any game to blame for violence in real life I'd tag this one right here. Don't get me wrong, I don't care for violent slashfest movies either. I think movies like SAW are just crap. Blood guts and gore don't scare me. Monsters ghosts and creatures of the beyond do. This is the most retarded contraversy I've seen. If sony and nintendo dosen't want to publish AO games, good for them. I mean, this ***** you can get already is bad, but AO just is useless. And if you want porn go rent Pirates from blockbuster. By the way Osiris I love that game. Still play it sometimes.
but i dont feel the film is about "senceless violence"
lets ban the guys who try and ban our games how bout tht
Your like every other close minded person out there. Just because it's out there doesn't mean you HAVE to watch/play/read it.
You can murder someone... why not do that? Sure there are reprocussions but you have the right to choose what you do with your life right? Why limit others with thier choices simply because your viewpoint differs?
You sound like one of those fools that while playing a game constantly complain about how stupid it is, but continue playing like you have no choice. Willpower is your friend.
Oh no. An online petition. Whatever shall we do? Like they ever had any effect :x
And for what it's worth, I hope the game stays banned. While it's nobody' place to say "Oh that game is much too violent" (in this case), it's an excellent example of something... abhorrently distasteful. Doesn't have anything to do with how scary the game is or anything else of the sort.
All Take-Two (or Rockstar) has to do to fix the game is include some sort of age check, along with a short disclaimer that states that they take no liability should you lie about your age. Either that, or they can simply censor it, but if they haven't by now, it's doubtful that they would in the future.
So... are people upset at the game being banned simply because they disapprove of censorship, or because the result of the ban is not being allowed to play a good game? When I look at crap like Manhunt 2, I couldn't care less whether this particular game is banned or not, but it does bother me that precedents can repeat, and a good game at some point may be banned because banning garbage like Manhunt 2 was justified.
Ok I didnt read the comments here, but whoever wrote that petition has the mind of a 12 year old hiding behind a large vocablary.
He dosnt know what the meaning of "uncut" is either, he means the opposite. Its strewn with bad grammer and mistakes, not to mention A Clockwork Orange is not a valid comparison, the author banned it himself.
I second this.
The only thing wrong about the ban is the hypocritical attitude towards singling out video games as a media. More responsibility is also needed with movies or tv shows.
1. Its "GRAMMAR" not "GRAMMER"
its not a matter of liking manhunt. its a matter of someone telling us what games are/arent good for us. Say NO to media censoring
I agree.
Since the game is AO why not they release it in AO stores. Like your local XXX Store.
jack thompson jr.
its the damn republicans thats why
Some of you are making it sound like this is a porno game, people this game is about a really nasty government project.....
If you want to see some real BS, go and look at Playboy: The Mansion, which is only rated M. So is BMXXX, both of those games contain extreme nudity. What is wrong with the ESRB?
I agree! That idea is fricken' awesome!
You are the load your mother should've swalloed.
This is *ucking stupid. First off, petitions, especially online ones, almost NEVER work. Second, this is garbage anyway. It's justice served that they can't get this released. They spent plenty of money, and plenty of time into developing it, and I think that should be a lesson to them. I'm not on the side of Jackhole Thompson, but THIS is too far.
But one thing that strikes me as odd... Why bother HAVING the AO rating? If the game can't actually exist with the rating, then why have it. Just say, "Hey, we can't release this, as it can't maintain an M rating."
This ban is in the UK... There's no first amendment in the UK. Just FYI.
Now the AO rating is around the board and fine by me... I order everything off the interweb anyway.
so let me get this straight, you can have an ultra violent movie, with 182 f'bombs in it (scarface), roundhouse kicking people into spinning blades that rip them apart (MK), Hostel.... (nuf said, lol), and all those get rated R or M, sh*t, even Phantasmagoria got the equivalent of a M rating back in the day, and it had a full blown, real people sex scene hidden in it, and realistic cinematic death scenes like the girl's head getting crushed in. The video game industry is just pissed cause GTA:SA almost got by them, so they're just taking it out on them. FYI, this is NOT the most violent game ever made. It's not even close to S&M violence that Thrill Kill had and that almost made it through if EA wouldn't have bought the rights and dropped it themselves.
the dumbest idea i've ever heard
Manhunt is a great game, Munhunt 2 should be better, people who think Games brainwash you (ie. You) are the kind of crap this world doesn't need.
people like you shouldn't be allowed to have 1 , you are the most iggnorant person ever.
Sam, hahaha thats jokes!
well i just lost mad respect for $ony as for nintendo, ***** them they just make games for little kids anyway (minus a few games here n there) , so who's left. Bill gates, so if msft doesnt ban the game in their console and despite all the controversey behind the game its only going to make consumers want the game that much more. so if there's anyone to rake in the spoils it will be microsoft, sad to say. they dont need more $ than they already have, lol.
as for A-O rating, let it be Adult Only, wtf its not like the game is a porn movie or something, the little kids will have to screw themselves and let the older ones (us) play this game, I for one will want to play it.
This is a video game. It's an interactive experience. You're doing it all. It's just not necessary for it to be this way. Lighten it up a little. The release it.
For those of you that think banning games like stop ppl from being violent. Think again jackass!! Ppl in general are violent not the games that they play. The games they play don't make them violent. It is the environment like the teachers/parent fault for raising a violent kid not the game they play! D'uh!
