And just when you thought that the era of single-disc games is here to stay, along comes a Japanese game that is apparently not enough for just one UMD. That's right folks, a dual UMD disc has finally been announced, and it's no other than the latest installment to the Legend of Heroes RPG series, Eiyuu Densetsu Sora no Kiseki SC (a.k.a. Legend of Heroes: Miracle of the Sky, Second Chapter).

As announced by the title's creator, Nihon Falcom Corporation, Eiyuu Densetsu Sora no Kiseki SC is set to be released on September 27 of this year, and will be making use of two UMDs instead of the usual one. As of yet, there is still no mention on why exactly they ended up needing two discs. Of course there's always the possibility that the game isn't THAT large that it needs both of the discs, as there's always the chance that the second disc will contain extra goodies like movies, galleries, artwork, etc. But then again, until official word comes out, who knows?

For those who may not be familiar with the Legend of Heroes series, it is one of the few console games that Nihon Falcom has ever created, as the company primarily focuses on developing RPGs for the PC. Because of this, Eiyuu Densetsu Sora no Kiseki SC also has a PC version for those who prefer playing on their desktops.

As we wait for more news about this game, here are some screenshots from both the PSP and the PC version of the game, as well as a short demo movie that was taken from the game's official site.

...are they going to make us switch discs or do we have to flip the UMD?

I bet it will run like normal on both disks, but if you put the wrong one in for your savedata, then it'll complain to you to switch UMD's.

1.8gb isn't enuff? hmm. lol. Gamecube discs had around the same amount of space in their discs didn't they? and they've got massive games like Twilight princess on em.

Also, just curious, is the PSP able to read dual layer UMDs?

IMO it's about time. It means that maybe now companies might be open to making longer RPG's and the like by using 2 UMD's. It's not a bad idea, save for the few who will complain they can't be bothered to carry around 2 UMD's instead of the normal 1 UMD. So kudos to them for finally doing this.

The PSP discs are Dual Layered discs so that automatically answers your pathetic question.

I'm just glad that this next Legends of Heroes game looks to be more 3D. I hope they add something else to the gameplay, because 1,2 and 3 are so similar. I've only played the first one, as I own it. I have not felt the need to buy the other two, since I don't want top lay the same gay with just a different story.

# good ideaGuest 2007-04-18 10:16
Thats actually a good idea, they should do that. It would be faster and people playing that game wouldnt have to lug around two UMDs. It would suck if you only were holding one disc with you and you finally needed to switch discs and you only had the first one.

# Maybe to protect against piracyGuest 2007-04-18 13:10
The game is probably just big. But what I'm curious to ask is when you are finished with the first disc, does it ask you to switch to the second disc to continue on? Or can you just save at the end and go to the XMB and start the second disc? This is probably good protection against iso loading if it requires you to put in the second one while you have the first one in and finish it. Because what will happen when you have both the isos and you finish the first one? How will you switch to the second UMD...I mean iso?

The game is probably crammed with high-resolution cinematics, making the need for an additional disc a requirement....

I can't see any reason for a game to need 2 discs otherwise, unless it features full-fledged voice-acting, or if the game is extremely long.....

# I'm complainingzero298 2007-04-18 14:57
Yeah I AM complaining. This is a portable system. Why would I want to bother myself with carrying around another UMD. It's silly. I only keep one game on me at pretty much all times.

If I get tired of playing the UMD then I play FFT or a demo or an emulator. However, if I am enjoying the game that I am playing and suddenly have to switch disks but don't have it on me...well gues I'm SOL

# yaGuest 2007-04-18 15:00
there is a prx built into tha system software that says whenever the UMD door is open the game stops and the home screen comes up sooo... that answers your disc switching question. try it now, and see what happens

# Cube DiscsGuest 2007-04-18 16:04
Cube discs were mini DVDs and yes they ARE MINI DVD'S IM NOT ARGUING THAT FACT! the reason the pc could not read them is because they use an unitendified file system that is not the standard ISO 9660 used on xbox and ps2 games only the gamecube can identify it so that is why. they are dual layered in most cases doubling the 1.5gb storage capacity to 3gb and thats how twilight princess fit on 1disc

# Disc SizesGuest 2007-04-18 17:26
Legend of Heroes VI SC was almost 4GB on the PC, more than double the size of the PC versions of the any of the others in the series so this doesn't suprise me.

Although its off-topic, There are several multi-disc gamecube games such as Tales of Symphonia.

# maybe not...Silver-Tiger 2007-04-19 01:29
hmm I doesn't think this because it's pretty easy to make a plugin to switch from the two ISOs.

Besides, I think it will be like Final Fantasy 7 or others, that when you load a savegame it will check the UMD (or ISO) if it is the right. And when not, you leave the game and load the other UMD and load the save.

But, good idea....

# 2 UMDSGuest 2007-04-19 04:20
Multiple UMDs can [finally] lead to some REALLY GOOD PSP titles.....now imagine what Konami's Hideo Kojima or Square-Enix's Yohinori Kitase could pull off on the PSP!

Think about it - we can finally have some REAL console quality titles...like Final Fantasy X or Metal Gear Solid 3!

# that's the reason the gamecube failed...Guest 2007-04-19 06:44
Gamecube failed because it was o hard to run pirated games on it. (I don't even know if it's possible, but it probaby is). It's a sad fact, but true...

It's really ez to switch the ISO loaded ingame so it's not like this'll stop piracy... besides, y'know how pissed off everyone will get if they can't save at the end of disc 1 without needing disc 2? Everyone will be pissed off if they are away from home and only have disc 1 and then they get to disc 2 and they can't save becuz the *****ty way it's made... So if they made it like that, trust me, it would be all over the net how crappy it is and NO ONE would buy it... the ppl who made this aren't stupid enough to do that.

The game doesn't stop... the only thing that happens is the home screen pops up... and you can EASILY just press no and go back to the game
