It has always been a cat and mouse relationship between hackers (or attackers according to FrSIRT) and Sony. And by cat and mouse by no means do we refer to Tom and Jerry, but the carnage that is Itchy and Scratchy and the nasty ways they've figured out to hurt or in this case outwit one another.
Take the case of DevHook. Some time in August the developer received a Cease and Desist Order from Sony that lead to the site's shutdown. But that little stint only caused developers to get even. Hence, the release of numerous downdaters/downgraders. While others like DreaDNoughT took the more comical approach by releasing a satirical game called Hackers vs Sony.
When FrSIRT reported that "A vulnerability has been identified in Sony PSP, which could be exploited by attackers to execute arbitrary commands," it's like music to hackers' ears. We can only speculate that this urged Sony to take the defensive and release v2.81, with a v2.81 ad flashing across their site. However, it is so far only available in Europe as the US site still has v2.80 on their System Update page. Even the Sony's Official Japanese site doesn't have this release.
QJ Forum members have been so kind as to try and download the World Tour Soccer 2 with hopes that it's bundled in the game, but the experiment only confirmed that it is not coupled with the game. If you want to go see it for yourself you can bypass the YourPSP registration by entering in your PSP's serial number and putting "SB" at the front instead of the other letters you have, and by entering PSP-1003 as the code.
Which can only lead us to speculate, wait and speculate some more on what Sony is up to. At this point, we can only give you a friendly reminder: If you still want to play your homebrew, do not upgrade.

Sony should just give up. This one will get hacked too. They probably want to have descent security for the playstation emulator coming out so people will upgrade voluntarily. Since I have 2 psp's, I might, but it will still get hacked.

Its a false alarm, 2.81 has NOT been released. The only source was an image on yourpsp.com. Other than that, its not on Network Update or any official PSP site.

i got a world tour soccer 06 demo umd in the mail. worked fine with devhook'd 2.71
I'm stopping at 2.8! I stupidly updated just to play the demos, what an arse!! Soon as I can downgrade (fingers crossed) I'm sticking at 1.5. No more updating for me... I learned the hard way, my advice... DON'T UPGRADE EVER :o)

PCs and PDAs and all other sorts of electric devices run any damn program they want... why should PSP be less than what it can be. Sure there is malware out there but it would be useless if sony would have just enabled writing directly to the flash on PSP so the system could be restored in the case of bricking. wouldn't it be retarded if every windows update had new ways of making sure you only run microsoft word and other offical programs... homebrew is the killer app of the psp because it makes the PSP almost as versitile as a computer.
this is off topic but whatever today when i was looking at electronics in hong kong i saw people selling 1.5 psps with ta-082 motherboards. I'm sure of it because i saw the letters in the back of the umd drive, and there weren't just a few all of them were 1.5 with TA-082 motherboards. SO yeah, ***** 2.81
@28 and what about when the gps and camera be released? most people will upgrade just to use the cool gps device.

defo is a fix for that new exploit but it got me thinking that maybe cos they got 2.71 downgardable that sum 1 just hacked thier site for a laugh and replaced that 2.80 with 2.81 to take the piss at sony cos of how they release an upgrade everytime they hack it cos as far as i know the next one is supposed to be 3.0

It shouldn't take a genius at Sony to realize what they need to do - create 'artificial' upgrades for each of their most popular titles as they're released.
Each sports title, the new Mortal Kombat, Grand Theft, anything that might have an interest base of several thousand sales on the first day, slap another .01 onto the version just for the purpose of needing to run that game.
Eventually, even the most dedicated of coders would get sick of having to make a new hack every week, and some people would upgrade out of frustration without being able to downgrade.
I am beginning to hate Sony more and more...corporate control...
Just hope my mistake to upgrade to 2.8 was not the last...

If you take a look at yourpsp.com now, you'll notice that the 2.81 banner is removed and that the 2.80 is put back on...
So, was that 2.81 thing a joke by Sony or what?? I don't get it, but I now one thing for sure... I will never upgrade my freshly downgraded 2.71->1.50 anymore! Hopefully Booster adds 2.80 emulation in DevHook soon, now that it's decrypted... I'm crossing my fingers!!

The only reason they released this was to keep us from devhooking 2.80 and playing gta:vcs.
Without gta, the psp would be nothing.
i just know so many people are going to upgrade thier 2.8 psps. becasue they cant stop. if homebrew isnt out now then they will update becasue they have no patient. then maybe a week or so later hundreds of posts will be on www.us.playstation.com asking for a 2.81 downgrader. just sit back and watch it happen.

I hope someone makes a PSP emulator for the PC that will play commercial PSP games--then Sony would have no reason to fix security holes in the PSP firmware because people would dump the UMD from a 1.5, or download it, and then play it on the PSP emulator without any firmware hassles. Now that would teach Sony. Unfortunately, the current PSP emulator doesn't even run much homebrew.

2.81 also supports memory sticks bigger than 4GB.

too true man. Look how successful Windows is because of that fact! You'd need a 2gb memory stick to run isos and even then it clogs up a lot of your space. On the plus side of the ability to run anything, homebrew is great, and emulators are absolutely legal (which sony hasn't learned, isn't learning, and will never learn). There are also tons of legal homebrew apps out there that don't run any sorts of roms or isos, and sony just stomps on them because they only want money, money, money. Well i don't give a dam how much money sony makes off of me, but ideally less! Why the hell can't i just play my legal homebrew and sony piss out of my business?!

seriously...like DONT UPGRADE i mean like i had a 2.6 and then upgraded to 2.7 and was stuck there for over a year...no Edison Carter.. no homebrew...nothing! It was like a taking a pacifier away from a baby...luckily i heard that the downgrader/downdater came out...so i downgraded succesfully and am now in 1.50.. its crazy..... so make me proud as well as other hackers AND DONT UPGRADE!!!!!
