Ex-Postal Service worker admits to stealing over 2,000 GameFly mailings |
Ó

Hey, Philadelphia residents. Ever ordered a game from GameFly only to never receive it? Maybe your package went through this guy.
Reginald Johnson, an ex-US Postal Service worker in Pennsylvania, has admitted in court that he stole 2,200 video games addressed to people in the Philly area. The thefts were committed between April and September 2008 and amounted to a value of around US$ 86,000.
Johnson was a mail-processing clerk who unloaded mail from tractor-trailers docked at the processing and distribution center in Philadelphia. The Postal Service's Office of the Inspector General started receiving reports of missing GameFly packages in late 2007, and on September 5, 2008, they conducted a surveillance operation that incriminated Johnson.
Feds tried to arrest Johnson later that day but he jumped in his SUV and sped away. He was apprehended after he crashed his car and fled on foot carrying a duffel bag that was found to contain 81 GameFly mailings. A search of his SUV turned up a backpack that contained another 79 GameFly mailings.
Authorities found GameStop receipts in Johnson's SUV as well. Looks like the guy was trading in the games.

Wow, what a douche.
and FIRST!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!
The recession hit hard in Philly.
GameFly is a piece of crap, should have stole them and burned them.
you'd think Gamestop would get suspicious after he traded in the 1000th game
Why do criminals think they can flee in their car? lmfaooo then you'll be on the run for a while, because they know who you are, they know where you work, they know what cars you drive, they know where you live, they know your family..
lawl
They probably thought he was a vivid game collector.
I had a GameFly membership through 2005 and during that time they "lost" a number of my games (enough to the point that my membership was canceled).
The US Postal Service isn't the most reliable source of delivery, that I know. But it was too systematic for them to misplace so many of my games. I know this was happening at other locations too.
They made it too easy. The GameFly mailers were bright orange when I was a member so if a USPS employee spotted one being passed through an office en route, plucking it off the line would be easy as pie.
My witty comment got owned......
you're calling yourself a douche?
I agree ;)
You also gotta remember they had that big protector inside,so it was not hard to tell even if it was not orange lol.
I'm guessing it's because you said vivid instead of avid.
True but i did fail in english
And so far I am pleased with the service.
I can't afford 60 bucks every time I want to play a new ps3 or xbox 360 game. So 15 bucks a month I take advantage of it.
I think it's something that every disgruntled worker does, that is try to rip off the company somehow.
I know i've done it and that everyone I know that hates their job does it as well...
but for the most part i just use it to avoid having to pay full price for new releases and for the ability to play classic ps2 games that i missed back in the day and are hard 2 find or way 2 expensive like "Fatal Frame", "Siren", and those "Shin MagaTen" games.
You're not cool. Ever.
You are a retard.
I use Netflix and I think they need to change their envelopes. The envelopes are a distinct red with Netflix printed on them thats very large and you can easily tell from afar what they are. I rent blu-ray movies through them and having 3 at a time going through the mail is asking for trouble.
It's one thing to do something like this....it's another thing to get caught while doing something like this. Serves him right. If you don't know how to do it....don't even bother. Idiots these days.
I am NOT saying this is alright! It is wrong... And probably not on topic very much, but....... When you download the game illegally, you aren't "stealing" it. You are copying it. That is why I hate that thing before movies that is all "You wouldn't steal a car, so why download a movie? Downloading is stealing."
Not really, it IS a lost OPPORTUNITY for revenue, but no loss in actual money. Who's to say that damned pirate would have spent money on your product, maybe he's she is dirt poor.
Never thought of that, did you?
(This is so off topic... XD)
the advertisement is always first
In Economics, that is called an opportunity cost. If the opportunity cost is greater than what is gained, it is considered a net loss.
For example, a game company has the opportunity to sell 1000 copies of a game at $5 profit (after factoring in production cost) a piece (totally made up numbers for the sake of example). Instead, they only end up selling 900 copies, and the other 100 are not sold because people downloaded. The company still made a profit, but they "lost" money they could have erned when people downloaded the game.
And under US law (not sure about other countries) pirating is considered a form of stealing. So yes, you are really "stealing" it.
Not really stealing it. To steal, someone has to lose a piece of property. It was merely copied. A better way to define downloading legally is it's "gaming the system", no pun intended.
(As in, "Jim got into that college because his dad knows some people, and I had to pay my way in. He gamed the system.")
I am NOT defending it. So I do not know why I get such a bad comment rating here. All I am saying is that commercial is stupid, you cannot compare stealing a car to downloading. It I get a bad comment rating for anything it should be for going off topic.
I mean "illegally" downloading. I misspelled it and used Firefox to correct it, and I clicked legally instead of illegally.
The person could be those guys selling games off a stand. Gets one original copy and makes 60 copies sells them at 5 quid a piece. For IW thats potential income. They still would want it.
Would you like it if your game which you have worked 2 years for being downloaded for free and distributed?
And as I said, I am not defending it. I admitted it was off topic, and that the only thing I was complaining about was people comparing that to stealing a car. Specifically that ad.
If you copy money, it's not stealing it's counterfeiting. If you copy games it's the same. They are both technically illegal. I agree with ssouthparkk to some extent, because stealing tangible property like a car seems much more of a serious crime. If you made something and share it, such as a photo or piece of music, that's fine. But if you did not make the photo or music or game, you are merely purchasing the right to use ONE copy of it at a time for personal use (read it in any game manual). The property (game code etc.) remains that of the company, you are leasing it from them for the amount you paid. If you duplicate it, you're doing something outside of your rights to use it. Not everyone who DL's games is dirt poor. Some actually would have bought if there was no download, so don't be so naïve - there are real tangible losses due to illegal copying and distributing. Back on topic.. that postman probably caused a lot of grief to the consumers. He must have been dumb to think 2000 games could go unnoticed.
Stealing a car and downloading a movie. Stealing a car is far more expensive then stealing, say a bargain bin movie at walmart. And you know what you're paying for when you buy it? The packaging. And the shipping of the item TO Wal-Mart. And the gas for the truck that brought it there which causes it to have the prices it does. Downloading a movie should be no more harsh than shoplifting. I mean come on, thats like saying "you wouldn't MURDER someone, so why hit someone?" Its not a good comparison. And rentals. What about rental places? Like gamefly and netflix. Or even music companies like BMG. with the multiple rentals from stores n' things, do the people who make the game get a percentage of that profit? We need to arrest everyone who's ever rented a game or a movie cuz that is the same. If blockbuster bought a movie and rented it out 100 takes at $5 a rental, they are making a profit right, but say Warner Bros isn't getting the money, but thats fine. A guy on the street selling copies cheap gets fined an extreme amount of money? I mean, what kind of world is it where you get a bigger fine for not wearing your seat belt than if you don't have a license at all?
