Eric Lempel: There will be no Trophies for the PSP

You guys would want to hear this. It's not the greatest of "good news" you can have -- heck, it's nowhere close being good news at all -- but it's important for you to know about it, nonetheless. Eric Lempel, he who is dubbed as the Director of PlayStation Network Operations, has set forth a final mandate on the issue of Trophies on the PSP. It's a no, simply put.

At last year's E3, hopes were sparked that the Trophy system just might make it to the PSP after all, especially when the Buzz! Master Quiz presentation appeared to hint at it. Fast forward to this year's E3.

Nope, you're not getting any of that.

Joystiq approached Lempel at E3 last week and asked this very question, and this was his blunt reply: "You're not going to see Trophies on the PSP." But why, oh why??!? Well it's all a matter of "keeping it secure, keeping it fair". We all know what he's talking about.

"If people can artificially inflate their rankings and amounts of Trophies" using the PSP on a shared PS-wide Trophy system, then it "kills the whole [Trophy] system." And we know we don't want a universal failure on the PlayStation's Trophy system, yes?

Still, sorry to be the bearer of bad news, guys.

I hate all things Gamescore and Trophy, they make me feel inadequate. Well, they make me feel more inadequate.

» true...

I could spend hours and hours unlocking trophies, then someone can easily use a cheat and get to where i was or even further in matter of minutes with cheats. That would just be encouragement for me to trash my game.

who has the better sense of achivement.... you or the cheater.....? it is never the same....

^^ I get what you're saying but what sense of achivement do you feel after unlocking a trophy.. really?

I like them and all but I dont particulaly feel proud unlocking any of them (and I do have 3 platinums)

I think trophies and achievements are a really good idea. They give the game additional replay value, you get new challenges and the most important thing, you can compare your skill with other players.

But when the console is hacked, trophies aren't worth a cent, so right decision here on Sony's part.

» meh..

sony has enough trouble providing us with a decent stream of games, let a lone some pointless, cheatable pixel trikets..

screw the trophies give us good games! so far the good ones are far too the exception rather than the rule.

Ah well. It's a bit late to have PSP trophies I think anyways. There's so many existing games that wouldn't have them. Bad enough on PS3 that a lot of old games haven't been patched to include them.

» ++++

well instead of trophies why wont they give us the friends list only on the psp 2000/3000 and psp GO cause they have 64 mb ram

by leo9891 - 2009-06-09 02:40
» YES!

Yeah! that would make much more sense to add that. then you can see what some of your friends are playing and then you'll know what game to play on your PSP and then your friend sends you an invite, or you find his/her game.

Then you wouldn't have to insert a game and wonder if anyone on your friends list (in- the game's friendlist that is) and if no one is on now you gotta go back to the XMB and pick a diff game that might have ppl online.

atleast give us a friendlist Sony!

» Get over yourself Eric

I love the trophy system, but there's still the same amount of chance the PS3 hackers can gain the trophies as much as adding it on the PSP. Stop being a tool.

That's the weakest reason I ever heard and it already shows the trophy system has failed on PS3, since people CAN hack that. Maybe not as easily but nonetheless, hack it.

I never thought the original PSP would get trophies, I always certain the next PSP2 would get them and I still would like to have it. There's really small reasons right now to replay my library for the 20th times. Trophies would surely add to the "replayability" of games which is WHY we have them in the first place. Who gives a crap how much someone has over another. It's just game achievements. Sure I'd love to get alot, but not everyone has the luxury of playing for hours unlocking 100's or 1000s of them.

I just pray you'll understand how awesome it'd be to have portable trophy system on a PSP2. Cause that's so awesome and no one else is doing it.

» huh

what are you talking about? there are no hacks for the PS3, unless you count the fake ones

by Stealth! - 2009-06-09 06:05
» Uh..

PS3 isn't hack proof. People have cracked it months ago. But regardless, Eric is an idiot to make this claim unless he means the current one and the next PSP2 might. Which he that's what he's saying I agree and never expected it to happen. If he meant PSP in general including future than that's stupid.

» Each game should just have its own "trophies"

Trophies are a good way to prolong each game's life, giving you more to do with the game than you normally would have. People complain that gamers will cheat to get the trophies in order to show off online, which is true, but who should care? If you're going for the trophies to use as a bragging right to begin with, you're lame. I don't know about anyone else, but I couldn't care less who has which trophies. I go for them to give my games extra life. If everyone else in the world has them all (because they earned them and because some cheated), then great. It doesn't have any effect on me. I'm not going to think, "Wow, that guy is so 1337" even if I know he earned all his trophies anyway. So, they could just forget about displaying them online, and have each game implement their own trophies. That way, no one has to worry about those big, bad cheaters, and people can still get some added enjoyment from their games.

» um no....

months ago was the ability to run java code....not an exploit. last time their was an exploit sony patched the firmware before anyone knew an exploit came out

Even that supposed universal mod chip that "works" on the PS3 doesn't do anything useful. The best you can do is play PS2 backups on the old version.

» Hey what 'bout us 1000 psp owners

They should make it that you can save your friends list on your memory card, since the 1000 doesn't have as much flash memory space as the 2000 and 3000 and GO. We've already been screwed over with not getting Skype, not saying that skype is the best thing ever. Sony should make it so that with updates, you can put new stuff on ur memory card, and not leave the PHAt users behind :'(
