Elder Scrolls IV coming to PSP and PS3?

Software gaming developer Bethesda has announced a release of Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion for the PlayStation 3. A PSP version is also in the works.

Some in the gaming world have found the idea of a PSP version surprising, although this game has been ported to various platforms in the past, including the Nokia N-Gage. Considering the popularity of the PlayStation platform and the growing number of people playing Elder Scrolls, the move seems logical.

The PS3 release is scheduled for November of 2006, although no date was given for a PSP version.

Update: Bethesda states "At present we have no announced plans to bring Oblivion to any platforms other than PC or Xbox 360..." For more information please read the updated news story.

The PSP is lacking in good rpgs -- and I mean non-anime style rpgs. I would certainly upgrade for a good port of any TES game -- even the older ones (though arguably daggerfall was and still is the best).

# I think they could fit the game.Guest 2006-04-25 09:53
It's been posted before, but remember that the the psp screen is tiny compared to a computer screen. You can reduce the resolution and reduce polygon count -- alot -- and still have it look great on a small screen. You can also compress video, tweak the audio, remove padding, etc -- I think it is pretty reasonable to "convert" 4 gigs to 1.8 gigs.

@14.

And why is it bad. The only bad thing was that to make all the 360 fan happy, oblivion had to be down scaled so the PC version wouldnt be better than the 360. To bad all the PC users can still edit there ini files and increase everything. With the view distance and grass hacks, it looks amazing on PC.Far Far better than the 360 version. I bet you mad that condemed also came to PC. Be happy with what you have, and like wise. Be happy the developer can make it multi platform, make more money. And in turn make even better games.

And its easy to fit this on 1.8 GB for PSP. The textures will be seriously downgraded. Speech will probably be dumbed down or removed.

To bad Betheda focused more on the graphics than the game. Dont get me wrong, its a good game. But the level scaling is totally messed. Thank god for the mod scene.

@ #18 although it CAN be better is some areas on PC Bethesda locked it so that you can not have HDR lighting and Anti-Aleising on at the same time so that alone makes it worse in most peoples books.

# Let's think this throughGuest 2006-04-25 10:23
I seriously doubt the PSP version would be in any way comparable to the original versions (X360/PC).

It's not so much a question of graphical prowess as much as a quantity of content and simultaneous calculations. Oblivion on the PC and X360 keeps track of the position of every single little object on a huge area, of the movement of thousands of NPCs according to a day/night cycle, of physics for every single movement. That's all without counting the graphics, the sound and the more mundane gameplay calculations.

As much as I believe in my little PSP, I doubt it is able to do even close to all this.

So it would have to be seriously gimped in order to fit; any not only on the graphics.

Oh, and I'd like to point out that Oblivion is definitely not the kind of games you bring on bus rides; lots of loading times and gameplay that encourage long sessions.

guys, I really think they're going to build it from the ground up for psp, I hardly think the original oblivion will be going to psp. it'll probably be a whole different version, it'd have to be or we'll be playing an extremely stripped down version.

@3: how does it make sense not to buy the console, because a company put a game on it? wouldn't it make more sense to do the opposite since Bethesda somehow let you down? It just sounds more like you want to say something negative about it, and never intended on buying one in the first place.

@28. The ini tweeks by far outweight any antialiasing with HDR at the same time. And to be honest i dont really see a huge benifit vs Bloom with or without Antialiasing. But i do see a huge difference after i edit my ini files.

View distance for buildings is amazing, far textures are in highres, i never see grass draw, and the relections you get after the tweeks are amazing.

And now there are the mods to de-consolize it, which make it feel much better on the PC. Overall Obivion feels more like a PC game to me, kinda like how PGR feels more like a xbox game. All IMO of course.

@37 You can get free horse armor for PC, just look around.

TES was never PORTED to the N-gage. The Elder Scrolls: Shadow Key is for the n-gage, and i have yet to see this same game on another console, so it can't be a port.

Anyway, i hope that TES is released for the PSP, don't care if its III or IV, but it has to come with the same gameplay in III and IV

38 - Your statement on HDR+AA is an opinion, I was just informing everyone on the disadvantage of playing it on PC while you just blerted out that it is best on PC wich is also an opinion.

I too have a gameing PC and while I generaly would agree with you I happen to like playing this peticular game on the X360 controller. Also while I could use my wired controller on my PC I would rather not have to set it up, tweak the controls/sensativity, and I like playing on my 55" HDTV from my couch. Most of this is my opinion/view on things but I though I would share it anyways, No hostility is meant by it.

40 - WTF are you talking about? The 360 version is ALL in HD. In fact Bethesda said that they even had room to spare on the disk.

"At present we have no announced plans to bring Oblivion to any other platforms than PC or Xbox 360"

Official word from Bethesda!

This wasn't annouced, nor was it really rumored. It was some guy on the Oblivion forums claiming he saw a release sheet that said both of these titles on it (eg. Someone Bull*****ting) It's about as likely as a Playboy Orgy at the vatican.

I think this will be real awesome great game to see on the PS3.

Most likely the PSP game will be a different story but that is ok it will be the best RPG on the PSP and that will help sell the PSP's a lot more.

I also think Bethesda would do this to bring in more money.I think this will be good because if they sell PSP's and PS3's of this game it brings in more money for the fifth game.

I just hope the PS3 gets the downloads as an extra goodie to be added to the game. There are three downloads as of now and by the time it comes out on the PS3 there could be even more added to it.

I really think that they would be included but you never know.

It is indeed a Rumor atm, but if does turn out to be a reality, you can pretty much gurantee that Microsoft will be extremly pissed with Bethesda. It would be a simliar situation to what Capcom did to the Nintendo Gamecube community when a few of there best selling titles that were also exclusives ended up being ported over to the PS2. Trust me, the Nintendo community was very disgusted with Capcom when they did that. They will defitnly get alot of sales with that kind of move, but in turn, they'll lose a ton of respect with the Xbox fans. Especially when you look at how heavily supported the Sony camp is with a ton of Exclusives RPG's. The Microsoft camp wants there batch of stand out RPG's that are exclsuive to there console as well. Theres going to be a ton of angry people if this does happen.

# Not gonna happenGuest 2006-04-25 15:28
I'm no 360 fanboy, but this is proboly not going to happen. A 2% chance that it will. Why would Bethesda port Oblivion on a PSP and the PS3, when they are already working in three different areas, which will need a lot of effort; Fallout 2, Elder Scrolls V, and making improvments [Patches, Official Mods etc] for Oblivion.

Plus, they are not familiar at all with the PlayStation format. I doubt that they can become familiar with the format and port the game to two different consols in 5 months.

Sorry to dissapoint, but the rumours about Oblivion are complete lies. The Devs of Bethesda softworks have recently come out and said as much on their forums.

The PS3 version has not been denied, but has not been confirmed either. The only possible hint Bethesda ever gave was way last year, when in one of their regular statements on their website said that apart from the Nokia Ngage version which is an entirely seperate entity, Oblivion was ONLY being made for PC and next gen consoles.

Link to PS3-they didnt say only 360

PSP-Isnt next gen console, so no chance in hell basically.

Sorry to dissapoint. PS3 is a possibility, though I would estimate it to be no better than a 25% chance.

Bethesda has not announced any such thing it is nothing but wild rumors and Bethesda has been asked about the rumors and they deny it. Granted the response leaves opening for a possible future of it happening but Microsoft has Bethesda in thier pocket at the moment.

Further more it is not even on Bethesda's site.

" And the source is http://www.tweakguides.com/Oblivion_7.html which seems very researched and reliable for factual information. Where did you read your info from?

# @ #65Guest 2006-04-26 17:21
Well it turns out that only the x1800 and x1900 can use both HDR and AA but even with those cards you can not use both on Oblivion. However you can find a patch on the internet to allow both with one of the previously mentioned cards but you do get a 5-10% performance hit. My info is from several sites including pcvsconsole.com and gamespot.com.
