EA's Larry Probst on the PSP: "I think the price point needs to be lower..."

PSP

During part 2 of N'Gai Croal's interview with EA CEO Larry Probst, the CEO voiced his opinion on matters regarding the PSP. For one thing he says that when it comes to the PSP, they're not really keen on making original content for Sony's handheld. He says:

It's more likely that we would target platforms like the PS3, Xbox 360 or Nintendo Wii if we had an original in mind. Our strategy on PSP has typically been to take the franchises that we build on other platforms and exploit them on the PSP. I think the price point needs to be lower, and I think you're going to see that next year, along with a different form factor.

Of course he goes on the clarify that they don't really know what Sony's plans are but, according to him, it wouldn't be surprising if they had a lowered price unit at US$ 149 and a more fully-featured upscale unit at  US$ 249 or US$ 299.

According to him, the compelling argument to get games for the PSP is that it's portable. However he does also say that he agrees to the thought that if someone own Madden on multiple systems already, say one for the PS2 and one for the 360, then they're less likely to buy Madden on the PSP.

He says that if you're looking for a PSP breakout hit, it really has to be something original or unique to the platform. That's not EA's strategy for now though. So what is their plan for the PSP? Here's his words:

We're interested in interoperability between PSP and Sony's other platforms, and if we can do something along those lines, that would be helpful.

While it's a bit of a downer to hear that another company isn't interested in making original content for the PSP, it is pseudo good news to hear that they're looking to take advantage of the PSP-PS3 connection. A mobile way to control your PS3 game perhaps? Time will tell.

# DS Fanboys....Guest 2006-11-30 22:19
Ive heard all the DS fanboys saying that the PSP is too expensive, and if it were to have price drop, it would shut them up!

# your argument fails...Guest 2006-11-30 22:32
because the psp needs much more then a price drop.. like the article states.. it needs a TRUE break out hit .. and not just another console port or console "Me Too Sorta" Port

its become painfully obvious that psp is already on the main track to losing the war... although its "soldiers" the fanboys dont like to admit it..

its like watching a bunch of faithful servants watch their aging king die.. they stay faithful till his last breath .. swearing he will rule on.. but ultimately will die.

those who disagree are plainly blind to the DS's Iron Grip on the market.

GTA is a remake, not a port

Killzone is a sequel, not a port

MGS is not a free game that comes with MGS3, it's a sequel to MGS3

Jeanne D'arc is a completely new license and game

And that's just the ones I own myself. You should've done research before being an ignorant jackass

Why am I not surprised that EA only wants to "exploit" the handheld market with more rehashed crap?

# DA PSP IS DA BOMBGuest 2006-12-01 00:28
The PSP is charged right. 300 bucks is perfect for it. It is a great console. Look at what you get with it. Internet Browser, Video

Player, UMD Player, MP3 Player, PS2 quality video games, absolutly unmatched and great wireless game play, homebrew which means your PSP can be your SNES, NES, N64, Sega Genesis, Sega Master System, Dreamcast, Gameboy, DS, even Playstation 1, Picture viewer which rocks due to its many formats supported, changeble faceplates (I didnt say Sony would approve of you changing em but it is possible and very easy), built in 802.11 b/g WIFI, built in IRDA port, rechargable battery pack, downloadable demos for latest games, Flash support, PS3 support, and for all you pirates out there its extremely easy to pirate games lol, I mean really this is the greatest handheld out there and its well worth the 300 bucks it cost (or 250). If you want a cheap handheld go get a DS there crappy and cant do anything but play SNES quality games (and maybe a few N64 quality games but not many).

EA is right. The first step to getting more people to buy this is a price drop and to let PS1 games be bought directly from PSP of PC

# Regarding form factorGuest 2006-12-01 02:05
As for the actual shape of it I think it's fine the way it is. However if they included a harddrive and TV Out they could really make it what it was intended to be, a full on media player. If they really want UMD to take off they need to either drop the price considerably or allow some way to display it on TV. Preferably both since the quality on a TV would be lower than that of a DVD.

I own a psp and yes I download all of my games. The reason being is that I have had my psp for over a year and I've played my old school nintendo more in that time period. (I've even played more old school nintendo games on my psp than psp games.) All of the games on the psp, to me, are just too shallow. Even though MOST of them are ports the fun in the games seemed to be lost in translation. I'm not saying that the psp is not fun. I'm just saying that the best stuff about the psp wasn't made by Sony but by hackers. Long live homebrew!

im sorry.. isnt a remake a PORT??!

Killzone is NOT a sequal.. thats the PS3 Version.. Its Original.. but its also a "Me too" Game ... you know.. a game thats riding on the coattales of a more popular console game... like metal gear acid and Scarface the world is yours ...

the point is.. theres STILL no solid break out titles.. they are all Ports.. or less popular "Me too" titles.

# And the DS is any better?TheCheat 2006-12-01 03:04
Sorry, but most of the better DS games are ports/redone games as well: Mario DS, New Super Mario Bros, Yoshi 's Island DS, Starfox, Metroid, etc etc...and don't tell me that Nintendo Dogs/Brain Age being different from other games makes it a worthwhile system. The PSP and the DS are basically the same game wise, just that when a version of a game comes out on both handhelds, the psp version is better. Also, Medal of honor is not a port, its a brand new game. Killzone isn't anything like Medal of honor/scarface, and it IS a sequel to the PS2 version. Lets not forget Daxter, FFVII:CC, Syphon Filter:DM, etc. Oh wait...the DS has a final fantasy game as well...OMG...thats right, it was a remake as well. Don't tell me that 90% of the game on the DS aren't remakes as well...because they are...just with worth graphics than the psp versions.

They're not in the position to be complaining about money/price costs! EA are money leecher's as it is,

they'll probally never change, they'll scam even the smallest child out of his/her money.

EA, go port something, you don't have the time to

be complaining about money issues yet!

I can't beleive that EA of all people is saying sometihng needs to be cheaper...CMON are you serious??? Name the only company who's PSP games are $50??? Guess who? EA! (I know GTA does too, but if you dont think they are actually worth it you have problems...) Just about every other game comes in at $40, but not EA's *****ty untested, unproven games. They can blow me, maybe they should work on producing some actual good content instead of buggy ***** and then more people would be interested.

darkdreamr, you are a retard. A port when when the same game of one platform is "ported", or "shifted" to another platform in UNCHANGED form. Then there are "multiplatforms" of the same games that come out more or less at the same time on different platforms. Then we have sequels/prequels and original IP, such as Killzone Liberation, MGS: PO, or Locoroco. Finally we have REHASHED games, such as MARIO, POKEMON, etc, and of course games made from kids' movies like Sharktale.

I honestly have to say I hate EA. First spyware on 2142, then trash talking final fantasy, and it goes on and on. I am not really interested in anything EA says right now, much less their "Original" games like Madden NFL 2007, or is 2006 still out? Not really sure since the last one i played was 1995 or something like that for the nes...

First someone from EA comments about games like Final Fantasy. Now they are worried about the psp price. Worry about the buggy ass games that your company (EA) releases to the public and STFU! :))
