EA and GLAAD to hold panel against homophobia in online games |

Electronic Arts and the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (GLAAD) will be hosting a panel entitled "Homophobia in Virtual Communities" to discuss methods on how to combat discrimination and hatred language in online gaming communities. Included in the panel are GayGamer Founder Flynn De Marco, Maxis Senior Producer Caryl Shaw and XBL Program Manager (aka virtual bouncer) Stephen Toulouse. Toulouse's participation in the panel is significant because of the various controversies that Microsoft has found itself dragged into in relation to their policies that are allegedly homophobic. The company has since pledged to have a second look at said policies to address the complaints.
The event will be held this Saturday, July 18th, at the EA headquarters in Redwood City.

This just totally changed my view on EA. I used to hate them, now I like them, happy to see there helping end homophobia. Keep it up EA, maybe next you can try to end crap games. But seriously, very happy to see a major company doing something to try to end homophobia.
Btw, one of the first things you guys should target is that piece of homophobic ***** expansion pack for GTA, The Gay Tony crap. Thank god that damn thing isn't polluting a good console, just going to the crapbox, where it belongs.

actually any straight person can go to any gay club or join in on any gay parade... I have straight friends that go to a gay club around here some weekends, there's no rules against it.
gays, blacks, women, and immigrants already have plenty of protection... the group that needs protection are people just trying to look how they want, people with unnatural hair colors, tattoos and piercing... these people are STILL discriminated against daily with absolutely no protection. I even wrote a letter to the Equal Employment opportunity commission and all they did was tell me the same thing I already knew... there's protection for discrimination against people for race, religion, disability, gender, age, and sexuality, but none for appearance. I have a friend that was turned down for a job for being overweight the other day and I've been turned down for numerous jobs for tattoos, piercings, and hair. I'm still waiting for a rights movement on that.

Most gamers don't like being language regulated in online games and I don't see how they are going to change that. Specially when 90 percent of the online talking are obscene or humiliating words. It's like tossing a stone to an open window.

True, EA does not make most of their games, but they give exact details on what they want done to the actual development company's. They will say stuff like "don't spend over $100,000 on the new NFS." Some games they actually do make though, like The Sims, they own Maxis which is the developer.

That was exactly what everyone expected from such a thread, complete anarchy.
I have been playing online PC games for a long time and I never used to notice homophobia or racism.
The chat channels are set up differently and more often than not you are only talking to people you already know or have organised to play against. The sort of angry child chat - which more often that not referencing gays or n*ggers detrimentally was not seen.
I suppose thats becasue you generally had to have a level of intellegance and your own funds to be able to get a PC install a game and get connected to the internet.
I played Tribes 2 online for SOOOOO long with open Chat channels and people were generally so well behaved that I could never have forseen this future where IT HAS BECOME BLATANT FASHION TO USE THE WORD GAY AS AN INSULT!
Before playing PC games and chatting online I used to own a Citizen Band radio (local range) which again did not have huge amounts of racism and homophobia. I think its gennerally because users of all of these mediums always had Peers - people they knew and interacted with. There was also an older group of in the know/cool people to look up. I would always be looking up to someone or another and the comunities were self supporting - People knew each other.
I can remember one young chap who reminds me of these young people on here. His dad was racist and anti gay. The young guy knew there were non white people on the chat channel so he had to curtail his racism but it made his homophobia go out of control. He HAD to HATE SOMEONE!! The only male role models in his life were facist bigots :( they must have filled his head with hate EVERY day and pointed at the Catholic book for their excuse.
Now days I get the feeling many would see him as a marta and support his view!
......back then me and my friends felt free and happy with everything EXCEPT HATE!!

The first thing I noticed - all the kids getting so excited and running their mouths off without any kind of hinderance. There was a group of under 15 year olds all hyper excited on their game yelling racist and homophobic insults at each other hour after hour after hour.
To be honest, I dont get on with online console FPS games, my roots are squarly with Mouse and keyboard but this experience made me fully aware of wht the future held for non moderated chat channels that were full of frankly ignorant kids.

While I have stated that I don't feel comfortable around some homosexuals actions(i.e, touchy feely, campness etc) I do have homosexual friends! they know the score though that I don't like it pushed in my face, and they respect that!
