E3 update: Sony phases out old PSP, no price cut for existing PSPs

PSP Phaseout? - Image 1

With the announcement of Sony Computer Entertainment America (SCEA) slashing the price of 60GB PlayStation 3 units by US$ 100, and phasing them out to make way for PS3 80GB, PSP owners can't help but wonder if the same will apply to the old PSP units.

With the redesigned PSP replacing the original one by September, the question of Sony applying the same strategy that they used on the phasing out of 60GB PS3 units (applying a price cut to help empty store shelves of 60GB PS3s) is quite valid.

However, Sony has no plans of granting a price cut to the existing PSP model. They are still bent on giving value, however, by way of offering the new sleek PSP core unit for only US$ 169.99, and the Daxter PSP Entertainment Pak for only US$ 199.99 - which includes a 1GB memory stick, a copy of Daxter and a UMD movie.

No word on whether or not it'll come with FW 3.60, but one thing's for sure: come September, the PSP hacking community will definitely be hard at work on making the PSP Slim homebrew-friendly.

I wonder whether they'll also take this opportunity to add support for the more secure wpa2 wireless standard.

they're absolute *****s if they try phasing out the original by allowing the new one to flourish with the newer fw updates..

If i had a choice between old and new, both for 100 euro, i'd go for old,

You are going to be mowing for a lot longer if you don't have a progressive-scan TV with component input. That is the only video output on the new PSP.

At least the entertainment pack is cheap. And stop complaining about no new features. That's for the PSP2, not the redesigned PSP. It's like the change from DS to DS-lite, no new features, just a change in size etc. Except the DS lite looked nicer than the DS and I prefer the old PSP to the new one. It wasn't _that_ thick anyway.

No cut for old psp ? Wow, Sony really is evil and heartless! Ugh! No wonder I never liked Sony! They are selfish!

Of course you will, you're a loser. The rumor about phasing out the 60gb was debunked already.
