New PSP announced - Image 1Sony's press conference at E3 is currently taking place and there's a lot of new things being revealed for the PlayStation 3, PlayStation 2 (PS2), and PlayStation Portable consoles. But for now, we'd like to focus on the bomb dropped by Kaz Hirai himself.

At around 11:48 a.m, Kaz went up the stage and announced a new PlayStation Portable unit. The new PSP is said to be 19% slimmer and about 33% lighter. Hirai also said that it will have a longer battery life and expanded video capabilities. According to the Sony official, it will be available this coming September.

Furthermore, Hirai brought out a copy of movie Spider-Man 2 then pressed a button on the PSP. The video then suddenly appeared on the giant screen behind him. He said that this is going to be part of the new display functions and the same will be implemented to everything that is inside your unit including games and photos.

Quite interestingly, the redesigned PlayStation Portable unit also has the ability to access PS3 and PC hard drives from anywhere in the world because of new connectivity options. After Hirai, Jack Tretton followed next and announced "Ice Silver" PSP that will be offered in the "PSP Entertainment Pack".

This will be offered in the U.S. in September as well for US$ 199 and will come bundled with 1GB memory stick, Daxter, and UMD movie The Family Guy Frickin' Sweet.

Think about it, they found the data in the FW allready, and as you could see in the conference (if you watched it) it was a cable hooked up at the audio port.

Only thing we might need to do is buy such a cable, and if it isn't available, i'm sure there'll be hardwarehacks out soon

The PSP was released more than 2 years ago. Someone will always have "just" bought a product before a new revision is announced. Deal with it. The good news is that no one is forcing you to upgrade, and it seems the base functionality will still be the same. (i.e. this isn't PSP2 or anything)

by J Z - 2007-07-11 08:40
» unless...

Unless you're talking a second stick that's mapped to the face buttons, they couldn't add a whole additional analog stick because then any games that use it would not be playable on the old PSP.

by GaveUpTomorrow - 2007-07-11 08:45
» Because they can't...

you can't have two different control schemes on the same console...it would alienate all of the old psp owners, force developers to develop for two different control schemes, and ultimately kill the system..

» Don't lie.

If you watch the video on YouTube, it shows the video output options screen. There are options to set the type of video cable and screen ratio. Those wouldn't be necessary if the PSP just streamed the video to PS3 and into your TV.

one.. dark alex is gone so... forget about hacking and else please... two... this is one of the best move in video and media fans... now.. u can have a portable dvd player and dvd player in one system... now tell me isn't worth buying an UMD movie when u can travel with ur movies without rip it to have it in your psp... and with slimmer look... and for the guy who don't like the umd tray... u have to like it.. it will be always close or u are always keeping it open and show everybody.. "look my UMD tray is awsome" not.. so.. if that what make the psp a slimmer look.. make it more cheaper then... anyway is a redesigned PSP not a PSP2.. don't expect too much... and for the people that just bought one just return it to the stores, get the money back and wait september... for everyone else... the same game will work with the new and old PSP.. don't argue for something stupid...

» RE: Second analog nub

The GBA was a full-out new system in the Game Boy line, much similar to the PS3's relationship to the PS2. This redesigned PSP is like a Game Boy Pocket compared to the original Game Boy. If you add a hard drive (which would make the system very expensive-have you seen the prices for the iPods-even the 30 gig ones?) and a second nub, it would be like releasing a new system with NO graphic advance whatsoever. (Now, the idea of a nub that actually works would be better...)

by ngyn13 - 2007-07-11 12:50
» useless

the new psp is just slimmer, and with different switch, button, and port placements. everything else like video output is just a gimmick for people to buy a totally useless machine. i use my psp all the time, and it does everything that the new psp does. in my opinion this is totally useless.

by I PWNed you!!! - 2007-07-11 12:55
» RE: lets see

It's not worth buying one if my favorite movies (usually older ones) don't come out for UMD and I don't have a computer to download new movies with. I'm going to buy one soon, but somehow I doubt the PSP software is compatable with my operating systems of choice (Mac, Linux, Solaris, UNIX, a couple of my own design. Heck, I'm not even sure it's Vista compatable.) Actually, it would make good business sense for the PSP to not be compatable with Vista. It would reduce the budget with which Microsoft could create new devices that endanger Sony, such as the Zune and the 360 Falcon.

» Some Silver Lining

The speakers have been re passioned so the audio should be louder now. The Headset jack is re passioned so it's not in the way of your fingers supporting it whilst playing. Wll they did was make it slimmer which I can't tell that it is thiner, re passioned a few things but all in all left it alone as if nothing was done to it. No second nub, No bigger RAM, which is one of their worst decisions and on top of that no ports for external control. All they really did was maybe make it a few cm thinner if that.

No point replying to everyone's comments individually, so I'll make my comments here (I bet my line feeds will be stripped):

1) Of course it will not allow homebrew. Do you think the original intentionally allowed unsigned code? The redesigned PSP will be cracked eventually, just like almost all PSP firmwares and motherboards to date.

2) Obviously Sony aren't going to include radical new features like a touch-screen, that would completely break backwards compatibility with the current PSP and force publishers to write two versions of their games. This is a redesign, NOT a brand new model (comparable to PS2 and the later slim model).

3) I don't know where this idea that Dark_Alex did all the work in the hacking scene has come from, but it's completely incorrect. DAX didn't contribute to the 1.50 era, which was a huge aspect of the homebrew scene. The homebrew scene wasn't dead before DAX arrived, and it won't die now that he's gone.

by teriaki 511 - 2007-07-11 15:09
» a few things to clear the air...

1) it looks like all sony did was create a hybrid love child of the now "first-gen" psp and the mock up psp from the time before it was released, if you don't like it, don't buy it.

2)the whole "video out" system can't only apply to the "Second-gen" psp due to the fact it would alienate the entire psp-fanbase who don't, won't, or can't buy the new system.

3) ITS ONLY FREAKING JULY, it's probubly a safe bet that the new psp will go through a couple revamps before being released

by guy-in-osaka - 2007-07-11 15:11
» confused

locked firmware? how will that work, presumably they will always upgrade the original psp`s firmware throuout its life, and new games will only let you play if you update to a new sony firmware, so how deos that work on the new psp if it had a locked firmware? i mean wouldnt it have to run on the same firmware as the original psp, or will you now get 2 parallel firmwares for each version of the console? or will sony stop supporting original psp firmware updates.

i guess what im really getting at is would a new psp be CFW-able? if the answer is no then im definately not interested, otherwise i would give my wife my old psp and buy a new one.

» THE VIDEO OUT IS NOT IN THE FIRMWARE!!!

Yes its a feature of the firmware to have the video out options, but it takes PHYSICAL DESIGN to get the video to Come out of the psp. its not like someone ca MAGICALLY "HACK" the original psp to do video out through the audio port or the usb. The video simply hass nothing to PHYSICALLY do with these parts of the unit. and yes the audio port on the New PSP has the vidoe out, but its like an ipod. Please look at your standard headphone/earphone cable end, you'll see to little rings. those give you stereo sound. The ipod videos have the same thing except built in to the same port is another "ring" or Tier to it supporting video out. The cable it uses has 3 tiers on it 2 for stereo sound and one for video. its really simple concept. The old psp simply doesnt have there 3rd tier built in therefore cannot PHYSICALLY do it. I'm sue someone could hardMOD it, but a hack, that makes no sense at all.............

WTF?!?!? No infra red makes this the best psp ever?!?! The only good thing that I can point out is that the psp disk tray opens out farther allowing better access to the motherboard. Other than that....video out.....who the ***** needs it?!?!?!

» When will they crack the firmware?

I think it is naive to think that the firmware will be crackable this time. I too have had my PSP for donkey's years and started with a 1.5, and have upped, downed and all arounded graded to the customer firmware. However, I also remember the literally hundreds of bricked PSPs that happened at every step of this, and remember the confusion when the ol' TA-80 motherboard complication was discovered. Fact is that a whole new board could quite possibly (probably?) throw up a whole new set of challenges, and how many of the existing crackers are going to buy a new PSP and concentrate on that when all of the existing exploits are going to be completely incompatible with every single crack to date, right out of the box, and they'll be bricking shiney new expensive hardware left right and centre using trial and error to discover that unsurprisingly Sony have closed up every single security hole to date.

Also, I think it is 'seriously' "naive and stupid" to conflate a couple of years of constant work into a projection for the near future. Assuming that it takes the same amount of time to get from a new closed firmware on a new hardware platform to where we are now (custom firmwares) - that's still going to take 2 years, and that's assuming Sony haven't learned any lessons. Now, are you seriously advocating people get the new PSP on the prospect that 2 years from now they MIGHT be able to run homebrew? Despite the obvious fact that there could well be a brand new console (or a newer shinier slimmer and sexier PSP) coming out then?

The new unit has 64MB of main memory compared to old 32MB. The increased RAM would be used as UMD cache during you play games of course, but there's no reason to keep it unused while web browsing. ITS SHINNY. thats one of the thngs i most love about the new colored psps. personally i still think it might be too small to play as you saw the guy in the vid. but if i ever come in contact with some molding equipment for a week or so i think ill make my own psp slimline just how i would want it, i also want the new analog stick if there is one to use acidmods.com new razor 2 board on to make a scond one for my own psp.

» To the guy tha says no homebrew

think about it.

if theres no updates, no security updates.

if theres nothing of the sort, itl make it easier for the console to be chipped and being bricked in the future.

in a way it will make things a lot easier.

and also remember, IF IT CAN BE MADE, IT CAN BE UNMADE ;)

the reason Sony has continued to deny rumors of a new PSP is because they still wanted people to continue to buy the original PSP. think about it, it they admitted 2 weeks before release that they were shipping a redesigned model, who would buy the original? nobody. it's called SIMPLE ECONOMICS... stupid.

by Silver-Tiger - 2007-07-11 23:15
» sh*t PSP, not gonna buy it

Comparison’s between the two:

1. No IR Port

2. The battery pack open/button is different.

3. The speaker system is now located near the top of the PSP.

4. The mic/earphone port is now moves up instead of being in the left groove. The mic port is also a video-out port interestingly enough.

5. The memory stick slot is somewhat different, since it’s not in any of the prototypes.

6. The standard battery pack is 1200 MaH vs the original one of 1800 MaH, don’t know how that makes the battery last longer at all.

Sony you f*cked up, first no IR port (for me very important)

then (probably) no internal space, a VERY ugly UMD drive and now such a UGLY design. No real improvements except

video output and I don't think that many people will use that anyway. Sony really dissapointed me. :( >,<

» thats what you get

spankmaster i was underthe impression by the description saying he hit a button and it started playing from nowhere that the video out function was a wireless capability not involving any cables from the psp thus a software alteration not a hardware difference. all it will mean is people will update to a new fw to get the video out function then moan they have lost all homebrew compats. and whine for a year until some1 hacks it which may not even be possible considering how hard it is becoming.

» New, but do you want it ?

No IR port is a shame for homebrew, BUT Sony officially didn't use it so they wiped it.

1200 mah battery with the same screen ? You must be joking that it will have a better batterylife. Or it must be a superman battery li-ion next gen or something.

I like the new features, but i won't buy it because i already have a normal one.

Also i could take more than a year to crack this baby, DAX is gone, and remember what needs to be done to have homebrew on this, Sony learnd from us !

-New motherboard, uncrackable (TA-087 or TA-088 ?)

-3.60 fw with stronger security

-Totally new prx and rco structure.

And you noobs who are saying that TV-out is a fw issue, NO. See the pin-out of the new psp. It has 8 pins, not 6 like the normal psp ! The two new pins are for color tv output.

It would be funny if someone could build the new features into an "old" psp. So the new umd laser which is faster, the newer battery, new speakers and better umd door.

" No internal memory for all those movies and songs Sony wants to sell you. No additional ram to make web browsing actually useful. No touchscreen when touchscreens are clearly becoming the trend.

Why would Sony include a touchscreen on a system that didn't support it before? It would barely get used by developers. May I remind you what happened with the PS2 hard drive?

I think not. Looks exactly same except too thin. UMD drive looks ***** still, TV out is a nice feature though. But homebrew is better.

Plus, what percentage of current PSP owners are going to shell out $200 just for a slightly thinner version than what they already have?

by i_like_games - 2007-07-12 02:08
» why not a completely new PSP?!

So I got two negative responses to my requests for additional RAM, internal storage, and a touchscreen.

Comment: To i_like_games: Listen its a redesign not a new psp, so adding a touch screen is not a option.

If you want one wait until the new PSP2 comes out not a redesign you moron.

Answer: They won't design a PSP2 now. They had their chance to look at how various aspects of the PSP were utilized by gamers and adjust to market demands. But instead Sony decides that we don't know whats best for us and tells us what we should play. I had my PSP for 1.5 years before I sold it. Its useless as a webbrowser. The games are less than stellar (including the horrible game control provided by that well-thought-out analog nub). The UMD format sucks. Ever get a piece of dust stuck in one of those UMD cases that you can't ever remove, and so it eventually starts making circular scratches on the UMDs? UMDs are flawed by design. Sony should have let you mail in UMDs for online credit so you could download the games instead.

Comment: Why would Sony include a touchscreen on a system that didn't support it before? It would barely get used by developers. May I remind you what happened with the PS2 hard drive? Including a touchscreen would mean Sony is ready to introduce a new generation of the PSP.

Answer: The DS is touchscreen and it still plays old games. The iPhone is touchscreen (along with many other new phones). The new Macs this fall will reportedly be touch sensitive and they still run older software. Touchscreens offer a level of interactivity not offered on the PSP, and interactivity is what a handheld is supposed to be. Sony could have easily said new UMD games need the PSP revision B to play. No touchscreen means the new PSP is going to suck just as much as the original one I eBayed.

It's actually 4 rings for stereo audio +video, 3 for stereo audio and 2 for mono audio.

For video, rings counted from the tip of the plug:

1 - Left audio

2 - Video

3 - GND

4 - Right audio

You'll need a GND if you want them to work :)

» try this once you have nothing to lose...

Please read this, you will be excited. When you click this link, http://000url.com/money you will go to a website that will show you how to sign up for another website that pays you 2 - 45$ (PER) to do surveys, sign up for trial offers, and test products.

Companies such as ebay pay CC to have people try their offers, and when you complete an offer, CC simply passes the money onto you. By spending an average of 3-4 hours a week on cascrate,

I have made 472$ in May, 412$ in June, and 271$ (SO FAR) in July. You get paid in real checks from "KNGSIDE MEDIA" every month that you earn 10 dollars or more. It may seem too good to be true,

but I assure you it IS true. Also, with their referral program, you can refer people by sending them your link (you get when you sign up) and for every buck they earn, you get 20 cents also! (Think how much money you can make if you have 100 people making five bucks a day)

You do not have to enter your credit card or social security number. Nothing Harmful can come from CC. YOU DO NOT HAVE TO BE 18 OR OLDER, I AM 15 YEARS OLD AND REFERRING PEOPLE, AND I MAKE THIS MUCH MONEY A MONTH

JUST SPENDING A COUPLE MINUTES A DAY ON THE COMPUTER! THANK YOU VERY MUCH FOR READING THIS.

Think it's a scam? Read this(from the website) "We assure you that this is not a scam! Companies need consumers to try and review products, services, and websites and are willing to pay money to have them do so.

Most of the time you're asked to do this without any compensation, what we do is take the money companies give us for YOUR participation, and give you back up to 75% of it!"

There are alot of websites like this, I have tried almost all of them and this really is the best, and legit one.In addition there is a new UK section opened with more then $200 worth of free offers!

[NO AGE REQUIREMENT, NO CREDIT CARD, NO DETAILED INFORMATION, AND YOU DONT HAVE TO GIVE A SINGLE PENNY!]

I'm sorry Sony but this new PSP looks simply awful. Same Design, a bit slimmer and a terrible looking finish. I'm not amazed at all.

» here's an idea.

You could keep the old version and use it for homebrew and stuff. Then get the new one.

» ?

Why do you people demand so much for the PSP? "i want it to be a phone with more ram, I want it to have built in memory, i want this, you want that. SHUT THE ***** UP! Stop *****ing you *****N litle Kids, Damb,...if you hate it so much why did you buy it in the fist place?! You are all a bunch of whiney litle kids with their damb toys. THE PSP SERVES ITS PURPOSE-GAMING, MUSIC, AND VIDEOS. THATS IT!. Its not suposed to be cellphone or a computer. JUST A VIDEO GAME. SONY is doing their job! Why dont you just buy yourself a DELL AXIM?

» Yes, the nGage failed...

But nobody EXPECTED it to succeed. It was Nokia, a company with no experience in the handheld gaming market, and their first attempt was high priced and not really that good.

Now, the PSP has obviousley been a success, hence the redesign. Gaming is its primary feature... How will ADDING a phone feature damage it?

» Re: Idiots

Locked? Says who? It's too early to say anything so STFU.

The remodelled PSP will surely have the ability to run any Future Sony FW updates along with the old models. As for security and whether the new models can run custom firmwares, look at the long wait between the GTA:LCS exploit and the Lumines exploit, it could happen on day 1, or after 8 months, but just because one has the patience to wait, or is happy without homebrew that doesn't make them an idiot for buying it. I'd be happy with a non-homebrew second PSP with video output for Ad-hoc family play and sharing vids/pics rather than having to burn a DVD-R and hope the DVD player reads it ok or passing around the PSP

» Nice

This is released on my birthday, so that is really cool! I'll just have to buy it then.

» The PSP needs more storage and...

Basically they haven't listened to anyone ho actually uses the machine past their own restricted firmware. The Machine needs more storage capability like a hard-drive, definitely needed better sound output from the speakers and also internal memory for internet surfing. The best thing they could have done is made the UMD discs Rewritable and change the read head in the unit to a RW one. This way they could actually sell us blank UMD's like DVD-R/+R's and we can at least utilise the unit better for storage. Eventually some third-party developer would make UMD writer units for the PC so we can burn stuff straight from the PC. It's no good them creating a machine with so much potential and then keeping it so under-utilized. The PSP could also have done with a kick-stand to keep it at a viewing angle when sitting on a desk or table instead of always having to find ways to prop it up. A file rename feature would also have gone down a treat in the firmware as well as a cut and paste option. Ultimately the machine needs something like a 30/60gb internal hard-drive to keep it in the running with other media players out there or by next year it'll be yesterdays news.
