E3 2009: Religious group protests against EA, Dante's Inferno

E3 EA Protesters - Image 1

Not everyone who came to the E3 2009 Expo went there to enjoy the games being displayed. A religious group going by the name Salvationists Against Virtual and Eternal Damnation staged a protest outside the LA Convention Center to make it be known that they do not think Electronic Arts' video game adaptation of the classic Dante's Inferno is classy at all.

Carrying placards with their own definitions for "EA" (such as Electronic Anti-Christ), the group spokesperson said that they are going after each depiction of Hell in all art forms on a case by case basis. Their rhetoric: Hell is not a game.

No other explanation was given out as to what's their exact beef against Dante's Inferno (Xbox 360, PSP, PS3), and no other disruptions were reported in the event. The most ominous of the posters that they had, however, would be this:

That's so clever. I'm glad everyone out there is a Christian. I personally follow Pastafarianism. There are hundreds, probably thousands of religions that have existed, just because a lot of people follow one doesn't mean it's right. One day, I hope an army of Satanists get together and picket Christian churches for being offensive towards their religion.

Ever see Dogma? This article reminds me of this.. I'm proud to be from New Jersey *cough*

» Ok....

Alright, I agree that EA is probably the devil. Their mostly terrible games, their over priced slightly updated yearly releases (NFS, Madden etc), their "new content" that should have and probably could have been put into the main game(C&C, NFS, sooo many others), their money grubbing "content stores" (Sims 3).

But uber- religious people are the worst people in the world. From experience I know that they would be the first ones to stab you in the back to get ahead and the last ones to help you when your in need.

This world would be such a better place if people would stop being "offended" by everything. Get over it people.

The Divine Comedy was a Catholic book that was written as a political commentary (at least Inferno was) for mostly entertainment purposes, yet I'm guessing these people have nothing against the book. They need to choose their battles better. For the record, I'm a very conservative Baptist, all pro-life and what not, and I find nothing wrong with game developers making whatever they want.

by phiyuku - 2009-06-03 11:28
» Truth is

there's a chance no religion is right and there's a chance that one of them is and each one has the same amount of probability of being right. Pastafarianism or Christianity. Christ or Moses or a Flying Spaghetti Monster. Personally I think Flying Spaghetti Monster has a higher chance since they actually have evidence that the less pirates their are the higher the temperature increase.

EXACTLY!! The chart does not lie! I actually did a report on the FSM as my visual aid speech in college last semester.. I got a B, it was called ridiculous, then I found out he was a very strict Catholic lol.. It was a good presentation, I pretended that it was a serious religion then went into why it was created: Kansas Board of Ed. Nope, too ridiculous. Maybe some of the protesters are from that board of education

» I too am a Gamer.

I too am a gamer' truly I am; in the order hand I've notice certain games have gone way beyond. what I mean is this Game developers must keep the game in a level that is not about (i.e) HELL OR HEAVEN, or any other life or death manner because some game are really creepy and though they seems fun altogether but their is a hidden risks. Read what I have to say 'all you Gamers.' the evil one whose name is Satan or Lucifer, have caused both young and old Gamer to want more from gaming industries, that better and all the latest video games so that all of you might forget God the Creator of the universe. To the all gamers the evil one has causes them to want more and more, but little do they know, that it was all Satan's plan or schemes. At this present time it means little or nothing nothing to them, because Satan has blinded them so that they might forsaken the Lord God Almighty therefore will causes most of them to be without understanding whatsoever. I say to you all Gamers out there, "know what you are playing! because little then you know it, while everybody is having fun, entertaining or marrying' like a thief in the night, the Lord God our God will come. "A day like NOAH or a day like LOT." ..."Therefore I tell you to choose wisely."

» hey

please dont let these people get to you. If anything Christians dont believe this stuff. Im one and i totally disagree with wat they did. If video games sent people to hell then alot of people have nothing to live for lol. As for dantes inferno, ive never played it soo i cant reallly judge it. But really again, dont let these people get to you. Just shrug it off if you can :)

» Self righteous

As soon as these people hear the word Hell they all just jump on the self righteous bandwagon, i mean you ask what their problem is with the game and they'll just give you some Bible quotes to cover the fact they know nothing, if i went to one of these Churches and said i watched a programme called Hells Kitchen they'd probably dunk me in Holy water instead of switching their brains on and realising it's just some programme about a foul mouthed chef.

by ReDx06 - 2009-06-03 11:56
» ooooooooook

Jean i totally agree with you on the fact that our Lord is comming soon and that we should be ready for it. I also agree that Satan has his hands in some aspects of video games. There are games out there that I as a person wouldnt play just because they dont build me up or i get creeped out by them. But dont get me wrong, not all video games are bad and just because someone likes to buy them doesnt mean they are sinning.

When someone gets too addicted and forgets his dutys or strays away from God, thats when it becomes an idol, and it becomes sin. Im glad that you are sticking up for your faith and giving the good word, (you didnt by the way) but your just gonna be spinning your wheels by trying to convince these people.

You cant convert anyone to Christianity, leave that to the Holy Spirit. The best thing you can do is pray. I know you want to get your hands involved but its best to stay back and let God handle it. After all hes bigger then all of this right?

by papajag - 2009-06-03 11:57
» @phiyuku

The only thing religion did right is to inflict fear and hope to the human mind. Because of fear and hope we can be controlled. Of course when I say no religion is right, I mean the beliefs of a supreme being. There isn't a god. I believe they only created gods because they couldn't answer one question "What is life?" and so giving it a purpose.

» Blasphemers

You know, considering God has never made it particularly clear which artforms are allowed to depict Christian concepts, these people are assuming they know the will of God. That is really really blasphemous, and these people could (according to their good book) get a ticket straight to hell... along with the rest of us.

PS Don't try to get me with that "Graven Images" stuff; that just means to not worship manmade idols instead of him.

by damonous - 2009-06-03 12:21
» So, in order to spite them for their right of free speech...

...We should hope that "an army of Satanists ...picket Christian churches"? ...Well, that's a calm-headed argument. :-O Look, I'm a Christian, and I've played a lot of different games with questionable origins (Doom, Quake, to name a couple of high-profile ones) that I liked. I've watched some dark movies (horror flicks, certain sci-fi) that I enjoyed. But, at the end of the day, I think if a game did get protested, Dante's Inferno surely deserves. Last night, I downloaded the trailer off of the Euro PSN, and my initial reaction was, "Wow, I think that one's gone a bit too far." Look, I'll be the first to admit that religion is generally about thought-control. But, what is missed is that (in most religions) it is about conscious SELF-directed thought control. --Could we all dream about the sickest, most vile murder or depiction of Hell? Is it *possible* for our minds to conceive of horrible things? --Sure. The question is, do we *want* to? Should we? ...And, for anyone who claims to be of any religious faith/denomination, how does our body physically/unconsciously react to evil things/depictions? I think the answer is clear that the body reacts for us, even if we manage to trick our minds into overcoming that 'because we want to do what we want and be cool'. ...I'm rambling a bit, but my point is that there comes a time when you have to draw a line and say, "Too far". The Dante's trailer is "too far", if you ask me. Now, did those picketers actually see that trailer? --Maybe not, but point is that they have every right to speak (as does anyone else here) and to not be outright ridiculed. Here's a 'moment of faith' for you: there's plenty of 'dark' or quasi-Satanic influences in different media, as well as games (how many have witches as lead characters?). Is it coincidence that these protesters happened to target Dante's Inferno (the article seems to say that they are just methodically going through a list of offensive media targets) ... or is it something else? ..did the makers of this game "go too far" and a power greater than us caused someone to intervene?

by FelisCatusLover - 2009-06-03 13:16

» .

But they just ignore the release of Doom over two decades ago...

I don't think QJ should post anymore religious-themed articles, because too many people just ignore the actual post and turn it into an e-war.

And it doesn't matter what you *think* happens, you can say there isn't a deity or there is, no one friggin' knows. It's just funny when people say "There is no God, this is fact" and vice versa, ignoring the fact that the person who says these things thinks they are a supreme being for knowing this.

And Satanism isn't the complete worship of Satan, it's the belief that you're your own God and the center of the universe. Some branches of it do differ a bit though, and I've seen some Satanist Commandments as well.

And I just love how I told everyone to stop their babbling when I myself just do the same thing.... Screw it, I'm out.

Don't worry.. Look at those screenshots of Religious group.. They are false religious. A true religious group do not speak up and protests against anything. They do not get involved. So, those Religious group protests against are false religious, that's all. Ignored them and this game is just a game! They thinks God is going to save their souls, no. They protests against anything is wrong in God's eyes. Ignored them anyway. They are the one who needs the help instead!

very good point when you brought up how at christian events/crusades you have people that picket saying the pastor is from hell or what have you. You know i think its funny...that can happen all the time and people really dont talk about it. But when someone who stands for what is right says something, then everyone thinks its wrong.

People do things n the dark and get away with it and they have no problem, but when light is shined upon it then they get mad every time.

And you know what Navani if satanists got together and picketed Christian Churches that would mean that they were insecure with their religion and that their religion is false. Y you ask, well let me ask you this, do you have to fight people to let them know that there is air on this Earth no, because its truth. Christians shouldnt and dont have to fight to prove that God is the true God and that he died for your sins, because its truth. Satanists have to fight because deep down they know its not truth.

» Retards like this

Make religion look bad. Its no wonder atheism is becoming so popular. Old religious folks are coming out the woodwork flaunting their ignorance all over the place.

I'm christian (not catholic they're just another example of what christians shouldn't be) and not even I'm offended by this stuff because its entertainment. Idiots need to learn the difference. They should stick to bashing other popluar things like hip hop and rock music. Try and find the devil in anime or something leave videogames alone and understand that public protesting just makes your cause look very very unappealing.

Heh, the US christian community had a backlash against one of my games a couple of years ago.

Which is funny. My girlfriend is a practicing Catholic (though not a mad one), and so are most of her family... But they all enjoyed my game even though it had Satan in the title. Heh. But I only had trouble from American based religious zealots.

Why can't they just chillax and see these things for what they are - artistic interpretations . Doom was about hell coming to Mars, its moons and Earth. Dantes Inferno has been around, oooh, quite a while.

No. The question is, do we want to make that ILLEGAL. And the answer, of course, is no. Thoughts do nothing. Trying to make certain thoughts illegal is a horrifying idea.

» Sensitivity to the Spiritual Realm

It seems only those who are sensitive to the spiritual realm can comprehend the link between what is displayed through the media and the influence of very real dark entities.

When human beings view or watch dark material, the mind becomes dark and easily susceptible to psychic attack by dark forces. So many think this is *just* a game, or that it is *just* a movie. But there is more going on, oh, so much more.

Once someone becomes dark in the mind, the light becomes almost intolerable to that person, and they attack the light. (In this state of a darkened mind, could gamers endure the glory of the presence of God which burns brighter than the sun? Are they then capable of receiving His healing love for them which He so freely gives?)

The majority of the games out there have the theme of murder and destruction in one form or another. Because the majority of the game developers out there have been brainwashed by games with dark themes, they (and their followers) are bound under the mindset that the only way a game can be great is if you're killing something.

I have yet to see a decent game about Heaven. Most people, when thinking about heaven, imagine fluffy clouds, etc. Heaven is as immense as the universe and filled with cities, gardens, crystalline temples, creatures, and of course, angels, gods, goddesses, etc. with tremendous abilities for creation and expression. It is eternally fascinating.

Creating a game about Hell is easy. Will we ever see a decent game to match the beauty and magnificence of Heaven? I doubt the game developers could handle it.
