Why??

Why do the Japanese loved the DS so much? I just don't get it. I have one and it just isn't fun for me.

That or your one of the ones who prefers graphics and mindlessly violent games over different types of gameplay. Not saying its anything bad, but the DS isn't really for people that love gameslike GTA as much as they do. Thing is, they'll hardly be a new market leader. Just reclaiming the crown sorta.

but I'm sick of seeing Nintendo news on the PSP page. I come to the PSP page to see PSP related articles, homebrew, hacks, etc etc. If i wanted to know how great Nintendo was doing, I'd go to it's appropiate page.

I really don't think that Nintendo will reclaim the console crown. As far as handhelds go, they will win easily in Japan but lose everywhere else in the long run.

Hand helds are not consoles. There is no point to compare DS lite to PS2. Japanese do not just buy one DS. Most have several versions. Why so many got sold? 1. Peep pressure. 2. Cheaper. 3. Many fun and silly games - the choice is much more than what we see in US. 4. Size is smaller. Don't forget. PSP is not small enough to fit inside your shirt pockets and summer pants. When it comes to consoles, people do like to have higher raw power. The Nintendo Revolution is going to be a disaster for the company.

I'm no Sony nor Nintendo fanboy... But I do have to agree with post #3... I'm totally sick of seeing DS related news in "PSPupdates". I come in here to get news related to the PSP, if I were to read news about something else I'd go myself look for that something else... And I have both handhelds and the PSP easily wins when it comes to gaming experience... The only game I find funny in DS is RE - Deadly Silence... DS just outsells PSP in Japan because Japaneses ARE Nintendo fanboys... Though I think the PSP still lacks some great games in its library (most of them are out just recently). ok I hate to say this but this is all in japan. Honestly the most impotant numbers are what it does in the USA. Example. PS2 Xbox war. Xbox prospered even though not selling any units in japan.

First of qj.net is has the artivle in 2 places, ds.qj.net and the psp update site, so obiously it relates to both consoles. So they both are related (they talk about the psp and the ds) so they got the right to put it in the ds update site and the psp update site. PS you 2 peeps are dumb.

firstly, this news does relate to psp and that's why it's in the psp blog as well as ds. did you see figures for how well psp sold? you may not care about whether ds outsells psp, but you can't deny they're in direct competition and as such relative sales are telling. you may find out how well these things sell in the US or in europe in due time, but japan is the place very many important games come from and lets not forget both sony and nintendo are japanese companies. so japan is important whether you like it or not. clearly they have weird taste in games, but this trend for how consoles sell in japan being so different to the rest of the world is important... what's to stay it will stop there? games consoles have mainly been sold globally, but what happens when nintendo realise that their ds2 or whatever won't go down well enough outside japan and they decide to not release it in europe or the US? nintendo said they wanted to expand the market, and looking at the figures elsewhere they have succeeded. they may back one good idea to every 4 or 5 lame ducks but you can't just disregard nintendo for that reason... most people baulked at ds when it was announced, and clearly it's doing well; so stop complaining. you should be interested in ds cos it's where nintendo are headed and that might be the future.

japan loves the ps2 i find it hard to believe that the ds outsold it.. but i do think that the japanese spend more time away from home either for work or traveling to and from work.. as crowded as it is there i can imagine size being very important and the 360 is hardly small... ofcourse the ps3 looks to be equally huge.

Got a DS and PSP

They are very different and has strong and weaker points. Think both are great portabel machines. about Japan: Japaneese isnt much for the graphic, they looking for games with good feeling.

It's easy to get upset about this because it's just so wierd to me how well the DS is doing over there. It is mostly non-games. Listen to what Nintendo says. It want the casual crowd and non-gamers. What does that mean: Stupid(IMO), gimmicky, short and easy games. This will ruin games as we know it. The people that say they love the DS are because of the games are essentially going to ruin the games we love today.

i see a folder full of mp3s. and "drive my car to a garage and change my clothes" one of the huge things about the psp was MP3s and UMD Movies to make a statement that the DS doesn't have any games is stupid,when i game system sells more movies than games during it's first year,what does that tell you? i own both and enjoy both,Nintendo and Sony have a good thing going here where they both each reach a different segment of the market.i think the next with the Nintendo Revoltion and the ps3 will extend the market where you'll want to own both. sucks to be microsoft.

In my opinion , PSP is best for graphics and REAL games, and DS is better for like organizing stuff ( e.g. grocery lists, taking care of fake cyber pupies, yada yada yada :P). Plus, it's a fad, and not all fads last long :P. Besides, if the PS3 was being sold at this moment, then all those DSs would make pretty good lifting blocks for the much more superior PS3 ;) LMAO

But #38 makes a good point too, it's a great way to start traffic for this site. It doesn't necessarily matter which system does better, most of us have two. If you have one, it's cool, you obviously chose one over the other, but for a few of us, we can look beyond the competition and enjoy a even larger library of games. Both systems have flaws, so having both compensate for that. Though it is retarded to compare Japanese sales with American sales, the total sales worldwide are interesting. Nintendo isn't going anywhere, they get such a bad rap for trying to be just a gaming company but they will always stick around. They are innovative and that's great. Sony is strong, yea, they are, great for them. They are choosing not to stay with solid gaming, they want to touch all corners of the market and though I feel that is a mistake, they aren't really hurting right? Nothing a few couple thousand layoffs won't fix right? I use my DS more....if Sony would lighten up just a teeny bit, I could breathe a little more with their handheld. Sony just needs...

This is not about japan are ninento fans this is just because the Nintendo Ds absorb a New Audience. Games like Nintendogs (a JOke to catch kids and girs attention) and Brain TRaining (To catch an older audience) and combine that with traditional game library (GBA) and u have a positive result. BUt Really SOny just needs a Dragon Quest PSP with online features and the sales will go veru high. Also the Ds are doing good but the psp is absorbing GBA audience too, its more difficult to the ds to absorb the GBA audience than the psp u can see that in the games that are being released right now. Ohh and BTW Nintendo cant hope to do that in the console market hehe.... MY english is very bad thougt Xeno

the reason the PS2 is still selling

they have to buy something when their 3th PS2 breaks. they are addicted to the product and thus need to buy replacements. sony hit a marketing goldmine.. they can claim higher sales, if everyone is forced to buy 2-4 of their product. i mean they cant just throw all those games away, and sony refuses to repair them for free because its "our fault for using it properly"

For most its about the Games, Games, Games

I am a PSP owner and have only played the DS a few times, however I believe that the replay value is much higher on certain DS games (Castlevania, Mario Kart, etc). Although it may just be nostalgia I feel that its easier to just pick up the DS and play one of these games rather than to get into a games like GTA or Tiger Woods, etc on the PSP.

I work at gamestop and im pretty sure we dont make a little check on a piece of paper when ever we sell something and than mail it back to the company. None of this stuff has anything to do with actuall sales, they count how many units they ship out. If Nintendo ships out 1 million units, they count that as one million units sold. Doesnt mean they actually sold 1 million units. And last I checked theres like 2-5 PSP's at a store, and a pile of DS's. I wounder which ones selling better.

As for the DS vs PSP, the fact that the DS is truly portable (as in more than 3 measley hours of battery life) and offers more interactivity with games like Nintendogs and Brain Training, makes the system more appealing to the Japanese. If you travel a lot, you want something more than a passive experience that lasts for 3 hours before the battery dies out.

#57, don't be a moron, they work out number of units sold through the till system. If they let the morons who work the tills (i.e. you) count up how many PSPs or DSs have been sold there could be all sorts of inaccuracies.

i guess what ppl arent getting as to why the ds is selling better is simply because nintendo A.cranks out more games B.has a game for every genre they can think of and C. havent stopped hombrew. sony on the other hand limits the psp remember when it was first out the only thing u could play on the psp was racing games lol. sony would have seen higher sales if it was still in the 1.0/1.5 era where homebrew was widely available. sony should ask them selves "we have the stronger handheld how come we are loosing?" homebrew makes a handheld all that useful in the end.

hmm forgot to let some other steam out. why do u guys complain where news is put on this site its THEIR site. and by now u guys should know that news pertaining to handheld and console sales are general news and its posted in all the blogs. its standard procedure here people! and yea psp "fanboys" do tend do be more imature notice how they all have a psp and hate the ds, yet the ds "fanboys" usually have both systems and like em both. as far as the "its only in japan the us is what counts in sales" and "the us has 300 million and jap has 127 mill people" yea thats true but that is just counting the population as a whole, how about u take into account that most likely 80% or more of the 127 mill in japan are gamers or have a system. in the u.s that 300 million i doubt the u.s has that many gamers. so japan is where u compare console popularity since its the highest concentration of gamers and home territory. the us and europe are only second in terms of sales importance.hence high priority to release in jap then everywhere else

ill admit i did troll but cmon! this is a psp site! everywhere i go i see news about nintendo and countless fanboys supporting them and spreading their cheeks for whatever nintendo pushes them. even on a site that is for the psp. i know this is a blog and they can do whatever they want but really... i dont care how well the ds is selling when compared to the psp unless the psp is beating the ds. if nintendo made that boomerang controller, everyone would be like "wow! thats so innovative! cant wait to use it!!1!one!" instead sony made it and everyone made fun of it so now sony is going to change it. probably back to the dual shock. thanks.... while the controller did look a little odd but so did the dual shock when we first saw it. hell, remember the n64 controller? that thing was awesome for goldeneye and perfect dark. yet it was the most god-awful looking thing since elephant man. so that boomerang controller could of been great. hopefully theyll atleast release seperate from the console. true nintendo is the oldest out of the 3 consoles but i dont see why people are holding onto them so strongly. yea the ds is different but i wouldnt say "innovative" since phones and pdas have touch screens. hell its basically the function of a mouse but with your finger. i have a ds because i wanted a portable resident evil and i love metroid but man... it feels so play-skool quality. its dependable but dependable like its for a kid. the psp though might be less dependable but i dont treat it like a 5 year old would treat something. i clean it, carefully put it up when im done, stuff like that because im an adult and i actually enjoy taking care of it. its an expensive toy. think of a car. washing your car, vacuuming the side, oil change, check the fluids. one of the joys of having a car is taking good care of it. figured this is an old article so probably very few people will see it but i just figured id share how i feel, im sure quite a few others might share a few opinions of mine. i apolize for my very offensive comment at #47 but im just feed up with nintendo worship. its feels baseless

DS success is same as Revolution

What you fools don't understand is that the DS and Revolution both follow the blue ocean strategy. AND if you have't noticed IT WORKS. Some say consoles need raw power, well that's crap because the 64 is more powerfull than psx, and xbx/gcn are more powerfull than ps2. Power alone dosn't determine sales DS proves this once AGAIN!

the nindento "wii" is not going to be a disaster. i predict that the wii will be a close 3rd. the wii offers something new for much cheaper (if only the developers take the time to make a decent one ) and unlike ps3 and 360, it cant be duplicated on anyother system.

the difference between a psp and a ds. ds you play while waiting for a bus or in a bus psp you play in your living room the psp is just not as portable as a ds. the battery life sucks, takes too long to load, its not a "stop and go" system. sure the ds came out before, which has a slight advantage, but the ds is just owning the psp in sales which is saying alot considering the ds is much weaker then the psp.
