Consoles galore - Image 1

2006 was a good year for the videogame industry in Canada, raking in a total of CAD $ 933 million (EUR 613M) and bringing up total sales to up to 22 percent as compared to that of 2005.

According to data gathered by the NPD Group, hardware sales accounted for CAD $ 349 million (EUR 229m) of the sales boom (much thanks to the recently released Wii and PS3), bumping up total hardware sales to 43 percent as compared to last year. Canada saw 1.62 million videogame systems sold in 2006, which is actually not a far cry from the 1.35 million revenue earned in 2005. Here's the breakdown of the sales figures per console:
  1. Nintendo DS - 374,000 units
  2. PlayStation 2 - 327,000 units
  3. Xbox 360 - 252,000 units
  4. Game Boy Advance - 237,000
  5. PSP - 176,500 units
  6. GameCube - 89,000 units
  7. Wii - 84,000
  8. PlayStation 3 - 45,000
  9. Xbox - 32,000 units
As for software, it accounted for CAD $ 481 million (EUR 316M) of the year's total videogame revenue, which went up ten percent from the CAD $ 436 million (EUR 286M) earned in 2005. It's also worth noting that the NPD found EA's NHL 07 (PC, PSP, Xbox360) as the top-selling game of 2006 in Canada. Perhaps because it was developed in Burnaby, Canada?

» Ps2 is too old for this!

What is Ps2 doing here ? It was too old. You should put this:

1# Nintendo DS - 374,000 units

2# Xbox 360 - 252,000 units

3# PSP - 176,500 units

Since the number 2 and 3 are not the oldest. The ps2 should removed from this list since it was too old console and it was not accounted for.

Imo we are going to see the ps2 in charts for at least another year.

I honestly wish they would stop listing Portable systems in "console sales". If thats the case, lets add PC, and MACs they play games too.. oooh how about cell phones?

Portable systems, and home consoles do NOT compete with the other...

» wow

look at the PS2 just march on..."next-gen can kiss my ass" he yells.

Everyone dropped a lot this month...

Sony needs more games... perhaps a hockey game??? (Canada)

» ummmm...

Portable consoles are exactly that - a console that is portable. It's an entirely different platform.

Why shouldn't portables be considered in the same scale? Because of their price? on release, a PSP was more expensive than a Wii.

» Hehehe..Truly Entairtaining..

Some Fanboys Cant Accept the Idea of the PS2 outselling the 360 Everywhere..

So Much for the Hype...In the End,the System Has Few Games Aside from Shooters,And not Everyone Likes Shooters.

One Full Year...and the 360 Only Has Gears...No wonder People Prefer The PS2.

Well....I guess the Next-Gen has Just Begun with the PS3 and Wii Launch,So we will have to see How 2007 Christmas Ends
