Sony Computer Entertainment Europe President David Reeves - Image 1Sony's PlayStation Portable has had a healthy growth over the past few years and, as much as some of us hate to admit it it, it's partly because of the global piracy issues the gaming handheld has always been experiencing.

In a statement released by Sony Computer Entertainment Europe (SCEE) President David Reeves to MCV, he openly recognized the piracy problem the PSP has been facing. However, during the DevStation conference in London last week, he also admitted that the trend was actually helping pull up PSP hardware sales.

Here's a quote taken from Reeves during the event, explaining his stance on the matter of PSP piracy:

There is a piracy problem on PSP. We know about it, we know how itÂ’s done. It sometimes fuels the growth of hardware sales, but on balance we are not happy about it.

Reeves also explained that Sony is set to unveil a new anti-piracy policies which will hopefully clamp down on issue. He gave no specific details on it, but we'll be sure to pick up on any new updates as we get them.

No, they have a *****ty games and crapass software problem.

I can run UMD-less on custom firmware and get 30% more battery life. Score one for custom firmware.

I can carry my 4 games (the only ones that are any good) on my memory stick and avoid the risk of losing/damaging my UMD's on the go with custom firmware. Score two for custom firmware.

I can load PDA software on custom firmware and store notes. Score three for custom firmware.

I can run full-resolution media files on custom firmware but not on Sony firmware. Score four for custom firmware.

I can use my own old PSX games (that I ALREADY BOUGHT) on the PSP with custom firmware. Score five for custom firmware.

Sony doesn't have a "piracy problem." They have a SONY IS A BUNCH OF *****ING *****S problem.

You must have a *****ty taste in video games if you think there's only four good PSP games.

I own 15 PSP games and only one of them sucks in my opinion. There are other games that I don't own but I know are good games as I've played them.

# CFW more then just pirating!Rasb23 2008-06-19 08:00
I agree that most PSPs with CFW do have it solely to priate games. I admit I have done it before to try before I buy, and thank god I found out some games sucked royally before I wasted my money. But I bought everyone I liked.

I do like ripping my games to disk so I don't have to carry UMDs with me. But I own all of them.

I even bought Syphon Filter: Combat Ops from the playstation store and how does sony thank me... THEY STOLE MY CHANGE!!

I love CFW because I can play the games I own without Sonying trying to sell me the same ***** a second time(ex. FF1, FF2). I can even play all my oldschool games like doom, RoTT and all my PS1 games. Plus you have great homebrew games like Stacker!

I love my PSP's CFW but whenever I tell my friends about it, playing psp iso's is the first thing they ask about but the last thing I tell them about it.

Doesn't take a genius to realize that hardware wise they take a cut and make up for it on the royalties they make on software sales. If they "unlocked" the psp, piracy would be even more rampant than it already is.

People can deny it, but CFW is the pirates wish. What Sony need to focus on is more downloadable, bitesized game and a good way of preventing piracy. I mean, Lumines used to be £30 here. Just wtf. And even now it's still around £15. Now, Lumines is a nice game to play once in a while, but switching UMD's to play a simple puzzle game is overkill. PSN really needs a revamp. I'd happily buy Lumines for £4 if I could legally download it.

A game like Portable Ops... Hmm, the number of cutscenes was abysmal and hardly MGS-like, not because of the style but because of the sheer quantity of it and the lack of a decent story. I'd be willing to pay £10 for that.

Know what the PSP needs? An on-going series. Like, Portable Ops, but with a new mission, level and around 2 cutscenes every week. Or at least month.

That's the next step forward in games. From movies to a series. And the best way to tackle piracy as they can include whatever they want to include in the latest update.

Okay, that's a load of bs outta my ass. Yeah, it's all unrelated. But... Meh. I'm tired. G'night.

# custom firmware vs piracyfrostbitehunter 2008-06-19 09:12
custom firmware is not piracy.piracy is the act of receiving something illigally that you do not own.you own your psp once you buy it.i think the main focus is the fact that some custom firmware users download games or movies that they do not own at their own house.that is truely pirating imho and yes it does happen.but its not what custom firmware was intended for.im one of the frequent helpers at pspmod.com and we dont even mention or have anyone mention where to get isos and stuff from that you do not own.

it all depends on a persons moral, and as much as sony wants to try to eradicate piracy,it wont happen.in one shape or form someones gonna find a way to pirate.

that Prevent UMD PIRACY... The PSP will lower on HARDWARE SALES, no body will buy a PSP to play UMD GAMES, just like that and Bored, then sell the PSP in half price -_-"!

Thats Why CFW is better gives u anything u ever wanted for a PSP! So SONY can say that they are not "happY"! lol

SONY: We are not happY!! Because We are selling a lot of PSP because ppl can have CFW and play Back ups on them!! Damd it! lol (We are awfully Happy!! YAYY! Take that! Bill Gates lol)

Thats sony paper...

When they made the first Playstation on 1998 (or something) they had more "Hardware Sales" cuz ppl could pirate games too! What did sony DID?! Nothing! Just concern about it and big talk and blah, nothing!

The same here they concern , even if they wanted to stop PSP UMD(ISO) Piracy they can try , but always Developers of the PSP SCENE will always crack it up!

Sony keep concerning about it, U r doing just fine!

Show ppl that piracy is wrong, but is good for the Company , cuz lots of PSP are on sales thanks of that and CFW(MOSTLY)

Carry on!lol

"refreshed security" means can still be hacked but may take a lil more time to figure out.haha doubtful but ya

theyve always tried new psps with securities and it always has a flaw.even the governments had to upgrade their security but someones always hacked them eventually?and you think a psp has better security than the security defense and pentagon.hahaha dream on.they cant afford that kind of security =P

# duhFoolmonkey 2008-06-19 13:04
it would be impossible to have such security in the psp. the kind of security the pentagon would have is like a bunch of inpenetrable servers. and even if you managed to get thru all the servers, then theres still software to dismantle. and only hackerz who commit their life to hacking would even dare try because they're geniuses. any amateurs would be caught. and those who get caught end up working for the pentagon as anti-hackers so they dont go to jail for life. yup

If there is never a CFW ever... would any of you think PSP will achieve the hardware sales number now? Seriously? Really? On what ground? At least I know I would never even buy a PSP in the first place if CFW never existed. Do I also buy UMD games too? Sure, a few good ones but that was AFTER I got the hardware already and I like those games' dev.

# It is a problem (for the others)zoogr2 2008-06-19 18:27
Piracy doesn't affect the console itself, it affects the game maker and developers, Like it or not is a bussines and they want to make money of it. THATS WHY sony talks about piracy cos developers are like: "Hey no one is buying my games because your console allows backups"

If Sony unlocked its console like some suggested THEN there wouldn't be any games and the console will die(Its kind of a reason why be dont have so much games).

Still The prices are EXTREMELY HIGH they should lower their prices in order to be more economic and allow people to buy more games.

FYI: I love my CFW PSP emulator

2 FYI: Im in Mexico and PS3 games cost around 800 pesos thats around 80 dlls and the XBOX 360 around 600 with Forza 2 and CoD 3 (talk abour high prices)

Even if you get a modchip, you still need a CFW to run ISOs.

# *Sigh*BIH 2008-06-19 22:32
Piracy on the PSP has been around even before Custom Fw(look back at the qj articles they even posted links to ISOs).

Anyone remember the good ol' 1.5 days ?... Devhook anyone? or the other countless loaders that where used before custom fw. So you dont need custom fw to run ISOs...I also doubt very many people installed a modchip.

Piracy does'nt realy hurt Sony(booming hardware sales), but it does hurt the developers and users. If you pirate games then you only have yourselfs to blame for crappy releases or lack of them even.

Custom Firmware isnt to blame here, although it does make piracy alot easier and convinient than have to use loaders. Its wether you choose to pirate or not.

Anyway,

i cant see Sony doing anything software wise, most likly a hardware change.

I think we will see the playstation store built into the firmware shortly. Enable sony to make games phone home to your PSN account to check they are legitimate. Its a real shame piracy will always be rampant counting down to the ps3 getting its first "Hello World"

Piracy cannot be stopped. They can manufacture PSP2, PSP3 PSP4..PSP1000 with strong security and there will be always someone to break the code. The big thing is that it doesnt affect hadrware sales, if not, boosts it. However, on the software side, game development companies are and will be crying because of sales slowing down or not moving at all. It only takes one copy of the game to be ripped and hit the internet. What now? Are they gonna customize every copy of every game to each gamer? And not even like that. LOOOL
