David Jaffe starting a new games company called EAT SLEEP PLAY - Image 1Remember when David Jaffe, the developer of God of War and other highly-respected games, said that he has a big announcement to make? Well, he just blogged that he is leaving Sony to start his own company.

It will be known as EAT SLEEP PLAY and Jaffe will be joined by the founder of Incognito Scott Campbell in this endeavor. So far, the company already has a total of three game console/handheld exclusive deals with Sony.

David Jaffe mentioned that they are hoping to release their first original title some time in 2008. Waiting for that doesn't mean though that we'll be having some dry spells.

The company already plans on putting out a port of Twisted Metal: Head On to the PlayStation 2 this Christmas season. Jaffe gave a few points on why this PSP to PS2 port will rock your socks off:
  • It has the original Head On title but it's now running at 60fps and has resed up textures as well as some gameplay tweaks.
  • It has 5-7 levels from the never released Twisted Metal Black: Part II
  • It has a documentary on the history of the series.
He even said that he's trying to get the whole thing packaged with an art book, just to further sweeten the deal. So watch out because Jaffe's back. We wonder what kind of games the company plans to release for the PSP and PS3?

So...It's kinda like...Nobuo Uematsu leaving SquareEnix to start off his own company, but with games instead of composing music. Interesting.

» Clarification

Just to add a little more to the original story that should have been mentioned.

The new studio that Jaffe has formed has also gone into an exclusive partnership with Sony.

Although he's left Sony, he's still working for them, just at from within his own company.

» It's good for him, but for us?

It's cool that he's developping exclusives for sony at least, since it's them who made him. So I think it's a pretty good decision, I mean, he's at the top of his career and starting his own company is the best move he could do, and it's the best timing for this. The only thing I'm unsure is: will this be good for us? I hope that he's gonna finish god of war 3 at least!!! And I hope the games he'll make will be as big as god of war 3 (he'll need a lot of money and I'm not sure if he has it..). Or this could also release his potential, maybe sony put limits on his work and now he'll be free to do even better games? (not sure of that at all...). Anyway, it's a good move for him, I just hope it's as good for us... At least he still do exclusives with sony so he surely have a partership with them, and if he have, he'll surely complete god of war (with the partnership with sony, since the name "gow" is a sony copyright).

ps: I really hope he's gonna do god of war 3, and I HATE remakes, so I hope he's not gonna do remakes after remakes (since it pays a lot)...

» I saw this coming

It's not really much of a surprise. It'll give Jaffe complete freedom to do what he wants which can only mean great things for us gamers (or atleast us with sony systems). Nice to see that his relationship with Sony is still intact.

Honestly, working WITH Sony and not FOR Sony is exactly what Jaffe needs to bloom. I wish all the best to him and his team.

That goes back to what I've been arguing about for the longest time, Sony cares for their relationships, keeps their friends very close and in the end can get exclusive deals with said devs on trust alone. Microsoft on the other hand throws money at devs to win them over... which when in a tight spot... won't help them.

by hush404 - 2007-07-27 09:24
» Uhh I think you're wrong

Honestly, with his very little work on both GoW2 and GoW for the PSP... I doubt Jaffe will have his hand in the GoW cookie pot. It's an established franchise and other members of Sony's team (including Cory Barlog [sp?] head of dev behind GoW2/PSP) can handle the job.

I think financially he'll be fine. He's still got ties with Sony and if he asked for some assistance I'm willing to be that they'd give it to him.

by Shatterdome - 2007-07-27 14:19
» Both are right...

But it could help or hinder his stuff....

But also, he probably wants to do something OTHER then GOW, and if he stayed with sony maybe he would be forced to continue the franchise.

But, as hush said, with an established franchise like GOW, one man is not really needed as the whole dev team has a feel for how GOW should turn out.

Also, it's mostly about the artists and writers, who keep the aesthetic the same...then add a few gameplay tweaks and voila....
