The good news is it looks like the Metal Gear Solid movie is still a go. The bad news is that David Hayter won't be involved with the project.According to IGN, the man who gave Solid Snake a voice will not be a part of the film. Hayter reportedly pitched his take on the Metal Gear Solid movie project to Konami but the company "opted not to hire him to script and/or produce it".
Konami also reportedly passed on a Hayter-penned big-screen treatment, which according to an insider was kind of like Metal Gear Solid meets "Apocalypse Now" with Snake in the middle of a "swirling whirlpool of Genomic/military madness".

It's a pity he won't be involved, but let's not give up on the film just yet. Remember that Snake hasn't always HAD a voice (MG1/2, MGGB, MGA1/2) and when he did, and Hayter hasn't been the only Snake voice around. Any of you guys play the early MGS demo, with Japanese voice-acting and English subtitles? I felt it worked quite well.
The original Japanese voice-acting even managed to make Raiden (remember him?) sound cool. A quite astounding feat.
Just because we're used to one particular person, don't assume that it'll be bad without them. You never know, we may wind up with someone who does Snake even better than Hayter.
Hayter IS snake. This is probably the worst news I've heard in a long time.
Yea, the japanese voice actors were cool, but something tells me the actor who plays solid snake is not going to be japanese.
Oh well. Yet another bad video game movie. Silent hill seems to be the only good one.
All game to movie adaptations suck.
Tomb Raider 1 and 2 sucked.
Doom sucked.
Alone in the dark sucked.
Silent Hill was OK but sucked compared to the game.
Likewise, all movie to game adaptations also suck.
It's just a cheap way for companies to shamelessly cash in.

oh well, i'm still going to go see it, buy the dvd and pretend to be snake in my own home-made remake of the film anyway... - i'm a fan
Too bad they didn't just have Hayter ACT as Snake. With long hair and a bandanna I think he could pull off the look. Oh well if they get someone good for Snake I think the rest of the movie should be good. Hopefully anyway. I think they will treat this very seriously and not just try to make a quick buck off of it. Otherwise this movie could tarnish the good name of Metal Gear.
This is the worst news I've heard since....my mother heaved me out. I'd rather ***** out glass than see a MGS movie without Hayter.

Might as well kill myself. Hayter helped make the x-men trilogy. I think thats why Wolverine had a "snaky" feel to him.

Hey who know maybe there is hope that some day we'll get an animated version of metal gear. You know that they will choose Hayter. But if all else lets hope the guy is good for at least a cameo part.
He wasnt going to ACT as snake do you guys even know what he looks like? its like saying Kevin Conroy should've played Batman in one of the films because EVERYONE is familar with his voice, or saying Mark Hamill should play the new Joker and anyway He was in the running to pen a script or write the screenplay for it which there are PLENTY others out there i mean he wasnt gonna act in the film dumb@$$es. yall know NOTHING about film, if they are smart they'd give the role of snake to maybe hugh jackman ok his voice is different but he'd play the role perfectly
that was good and mortal kombat was good. i know people think res evil sucked but you expect it to suck , but it doesnt suck as much as you expected it to so you are quite pleased whe you watch it.

every line he's gritting his teeth and trying to sound raspy . nobody talks like that ALL the time, but daviid hayter does. when he wants 3 sugars in his tea he sounds like he is in the middle of a nuclear war . even tea making becomes high drama when david hayter wants tea. the audience is on the edge of the seat ..
Kurt Russell should be4 solid snake, the similarities are stunning! go watch both movies its awesome!

David Hayter knows more than anyone how to be Snake. His look and his persona has always been the perfect Snake. I hope they don't have some person who don't even speak english approve the actor and the acting without really knowing what is going on. This pisses me off! At least they should have Hayter as a part of the directing if not the actor. Many of the projects he has been involved with were better because he was there to help oversee them. We should petition this movie. If all the millions of fans were to submit there signature Konami would think again about all the money they could potentially lose if this is a flop. I have yet to see some of the newer game to movie iterations do to the reviews. I think I will wait and borrow someones to watch them do to the fact that the movies are so lame that they wouldn't care to part with them.

Snake is based heavily on whatever action movies Hideo watched and what was popular at the time of the first and second game. Hideo even went as far as naming Snake as Pliskin, fooled everyone but Raiden, in MGS2.
Kurt is too old but good thought. Viggo Mortensen(?) could be a good Snake if he gruffed his voice up.
As a Fanboy I'd watch the movie even if it sucked like bad porn O>O

Hayter's a writer who just does voice work on the side. he wrote the only two good xmen movies and is the perfect person to write metal gear solid the movie. It's a disrespect to his work as the voice and his accomplishments as a writer not to even consider him for involement...

its true, it won't be the same without david hayter's voice, but he could never do the acting part of it. this is just a risky movie, i mean, the MGS series is legendary. if they screw this up, it wont make me very happy. i mean, i wasnt very happy when FF7AC screwed over FFVII. sephiroth never had a black wing! it was just something they added in Kingdom Hearts to make him look cool =/

First, Hayter wasn't going to act. He was presenting a screenplay. One that, to my understanding, would be absolutely NOTHING new to us.
Second, if you're looking for an actor, it should be Kurt Russell, whose character/voice Snake was based off of anyway.
Snake should be played by josh Holloway (Sawyer from Lost) and his voice should be dubbed by Hayter, then it'd be perfect. Also, I hope it's not about Shadow Moses again, I'm sick of that. It could be about the FIRST game, with Big Boss and everything, to introduce everone to the story, or about MGS 3, which is the game I loved the most and doesn't require earlier knowdlege on the story either!

Aside from Kojima and every hard-core MGS fan since it's NES days, I can't think of any other individual who can adequately define Snake than Hayter. Hayter's not just Snake's voice, having already voiced Snake and BigBoss in four games along with a background in the film industry gives him a decent grasp of Snake's character. I'm not saying he should play Snake in the movie, if Kojima thinks Aragorn can handle a SOCOM pistol better than the likenesses of Christian Bale or Eric Bana, so be it. I just can't see why the Hollywood brass fail to see Hayter as an asset, at least in the production. Like any other fan, I've had my share of disappointments in the game. Having a marginalized operative named Raiden act as Snake's potential replacement WAS ONE. I hope the decision to kick Hayter out of the bandwagon isn't ANOTHER...
