Electronic Arts' Need for Speed racing franchise has been on a downward spiral in the past few years, and even EA admits it. They're now taking steps to recapture the franchise's glory days, and among their gambits is tapping Burnout devs Criterion Games for a new Need for Speed title set for release in 2010.

EA Games label president Frank Gibeau recently revealed that the Criterion-developed Need for Speed will be released next year. Gibeau noted that the game has been under development now for some time, which should hopefully remedy the rash of mediocre entries -- the blame for which Gibeau places squarely on EA for failing to put adequate resources behind the franchise.

I've loved all the burnout games and I bet this game will be good, but I really want a new game that's a lot like NFS:HP2.

That would be awesome.

Hopefully it's like Hot Pursuit 2, aka the last good one ever released.

Need For Speed: Takedown.

I love Criterion's work on Burnout... but did Shift not prove itself an awesome game? What's going to happen to that style of NFS?

Think there's any chance we'll see a NFS: Something (Hot pursuit or other) along side shift to propel the franchise forward?

» DUH!

Of course its on a downward spiral you fools!

The first games were hardcore games. After you(EA) touched the brand, everything messed up. All of the EA ones were crap. As what did you lot do? You milked the money cow while it was still running.

» That may be interesting.

But I wouldn't want to see traces of Burnout on it. Burnout is Burnout; NFS is NFS. So please leave influences behind.

Now, my most regarded version of NFS has to be Porsche Unleashed. I'd dare say it's my top racing game of all time.

This game sounds interesting and I consider Burnout at the top of the racing game pantheon so this combination could work out well if it's a solid arcade racer.

NFS Shift just reminded me that the game is better as an arcade racer so the king of the genre creating the next NFS could be a good move.

» I hope it's Most Wanted 2!

The first Need For Speed: Most Wanted was awesome! The tone of the whole game was right on.

» That's what Undercover was supposed to be

NFS Undercover was supposed to be like a Most Wanted 2 but they screwed it up.

sucks now... they need to make an underground game for PS3. otherwise its the same crap over and over.

That's the only negative thing anyone can even come up with about Criterion doing a NFS game. They fear it'll be Burnout.

Look at ALL of the Burnout games. What do you get? Extreme high-quality games. I think they know the difference between the series and can develop something other than a Burnout game for once.

Look at Hideo Kojima. He did MGS for a while, then made a badass mech game (Zone of the Enders.) There are a lotta devs out there with diversity.

» Here's what you do.

You want a game nfs that everyone will want to play? You make it multiplayer. Release it on ps3 and x box. Create a huge map that you can drive on openly while other people in the world can at the same time. You drive around and there could be race points where you line up a few cars start a wager and street race. Make other small missions added in so you can make money to spend on buying cars and modifying them. It would be like gta online but nfs. I'd be a ps3 just to play this game if it got made ;)

» @ NarooN

Sure. I'm sorry, I didn't want to mean that they would only know how to create one type of game. Since I, personaly, know no games from Criterion other than Burnout, I thought it was valid to voice that out. But, sure, you're right. I think they are completely capable of making a brand new and different style of racing game. They are indeed high quality developers.

» Actually...

that concept sounds a lot like Midnight Club. ;)
