Court says hit the road: Jack Thompson disbarred, Thompson responds

"And don't you come back no more, no more, no more," and so on. Breaking news, gamers! The Supreme Court of Florida has approved Jack Thompson's disbarment.

Aside from the disbarment, he is also ordered to reimburse the Florida Bar fees totaling to the amount of US$ 46,675.35.

It was Judge Dava Tunis who recommended the disbarment to the court last July, saying that Thompson:

[...] does not proceed within the guidelines of appropriate professional behavior, but rather uses other means available to intimidate, harass, or bring public disrepute to those whom he perceives oppose him.

Thompson, of course, responded to the court's decision, saying that the disbarment was the Court's retaliation for a case he won a few years ago, when the SC was forced to pay him a certain amount of money for damages. He explains in his press release that:

This disbarment is in retaliation, among other things, for ThompsonÂ’s Tyndale House book Out of HarmÂ’s Way, published in 2005, which blew the whistle on the Florida Supreme CourtÂ’s earlier efforts in the 1990Â’s to literally pathologize his faith-based and successful activism against the American entertainment industry.

[...] This rush to disbarment is in retribution for the filing of that federal suit. With enemies this foolish, Thompson needs only the loyal friends he has.

Well, looks like another court drama for Thompson. He has a chance for a retrial, but only if the motion is submitted by a member of the Florida Bar in good standing. Any bets on the chances of that happening?

Wow,

I ve got say that Im really surprised how many people on the internet especially, are so quick to raise their fist in judgement against someone they never met, never talked to or never even researched. You poor souls, you depend on everyone else to do your thinking for you and thats really sad, especially considering that among you there has to be some really intelligent people, there has to be.

Nothing against QJ, but Destin from Screwattack who does the Hard News segments, was the only one in the whole video game community who had the balls to actually call and interview Jack Thompson and find out what he's really about.

I realize that the majority of you wont bother to listen to the link I posted because you're too satisfied and comfortable in your ignorance and hate for some one you don't even know.

I applaud everyone with an open mind who listens to the interview and does their own thinking and comes to their own conclusion about Jack Thompson, whether it be positive or negative, instead of following in this domino effect of thought that everyone else is a part of.

I watched a few of Jack Thompson's rants on tv. He lied many times about what could actually be done in video games and stretched the truth to extremes. Who cares who interviewed him. He was warned countless times to stop his nonsense rants about video games, saying games like Halo shouldn't be sold to 15 year olds. Just because he has a problem with the video game industry doesn't mean he has the right to tell everyone else about it. No one really cares what he thinks and his extremism does nothing for his cause but make him look like a fool. Personally, if he wanted to bring people to his side, he should have provided real facts instead of saying, "this kid shot that person because he played a game." And I don't think interviewing him has anything to do with having balls,but rather, with someone trying to attach their name to someone who claims to be a martyr for a cause which is pointless. If he wants to do good and push his Religious beliefs on people who clearly need it, he should spend his time counseling children of child abuse or children who are incarcerated, not kids who are perfectly normal playing games that seem to have no effect whatsoever on their judgment or well being.

The evidence is right in front of you, don't believe something just because you saw it on TV, for God sakes man.

Now if you have any sense, take two minutes of your seemingly angry and miserable existence and listen to the interview, its the most up to date one done and it was done with out any of the biases that TV adds, no comments taken out of context, no agendas, it might actually surprise you to see what kind of person

Your lashing out at "intelligent person 1" doesn't seem to do anything for your stand, eh? You seem mighty upset by his reaction to your comment - which leads me to believe that you're just as opinionated as he/she - and while you seem to articulate said opinions better, you're really just of the same mentality and status. Taking your info from others, taking the "perspective" seat and projecting your impressions of it all on to others to help make clear; your point.

Sure, Thompson can be look at from different angles - depending on how you like to take on the matter. What media coverage you've seen, heard and read, but at the end of the day... it's Thompson's quick lashing out and "not proceeding within the guidelines of appropriate professional behavior" that brought this whole mess. His inability to work withing the confines of the courts rules to a level that everyone else much adhere has gotten him negative attention from both the court, which relies heavily on prosecutors and other members of the court following said guidelines and rules to an acceptable degree and from those opposed to his opinions and ideal - which in this case is pretty much a good chuck of those known as "gamers".

So while some may choose to explain their anger and opinions on the subject as "I FN HATE HIM!! GRR DOG POOP!" It really doesn't give your a right to call them dumb and "un-intelligent" simply because your opinion differs.

Because as Ive stated in my earlier post they're all part of a domino effect of thinking, they all fall in line if the right person says something or if they hear something enough times "then it must be true", whether its true or not. So I say yes, idiots or at least ignorant, but how long can one abide in ignorance before its considered idiocy is any ones guess. But for now I think its safe to say that you can lump your self in with the majority on this topic as well. I'm sure it would take someone longer to write a generic "I'm smarter than you" post, than to actually listen to the interview.

No. I merely voice my opinion on the subject; on how clean cut I thought it was and my take on your attack of others for not agreeing with your view on both the subject and a single interview. Regardless of how much you might think I'm "pretentious" - I merely pointed out that your reaction to "intelligent person 1" was completely defensive which clearly implies you care a great deal about your opinion of the subject and are willing to go beyond stating facts and counter facts to an argument and instead question the poster's intelligence; thus in your own mind giving you confirmation (at least in your own mind) that your opinion must be the more correct one.

Have you sat down with Jack Thompson and had a heart to heart with the man? No, you are basing your complete opinion of the events on a single article (thats what you keep referring to). You then claim a complete domino effect of lies as the reason for the opposing opinion. How do you know that "intelligent person 1" hasn't read numerous articles and watched 10x the footage on TV? Why does your presumption all of a sudden become fact because you say it does? For all you know, "intelligent person 1" could be Jack Thompson's relation (unlikely) and you just dismiss him/her as "part of the crowd who oppose your opinion".

You then finish your argument with the same tactics as you've been employing before. You categorize me in the "dumb masses" simply because I oppose your opinion and it's much easier to cast me off into an "un-important ground" so you don't have to deal with it.

At the end of the day, the people that would've looked into this case with the greatest attention to detail would've been the Supreme Court, and what was their decision? Disbarment is not a quick fix to a situation; it is a last resort.

Jtcp is one of those people: S/He is right, and everyone else is wrong... even Judge Dava Tunis of the Supreme Court!

Come on then Jtcp, tell me how thick I am... even though I've run my own successful graphic design company since 2001 and finishing the 3rd year of my law degree.

I would just keep one thing in mind...The Current President, George W. Bush graduated from Harvard, are you going to Harvard? I know I didn't. that interview was quite interesting seems like he isn't as insane as he is made out to be however that doesn't change the way in which he has acted on his oppinions. i will give him the benefit of the dought though after its possible he was treated improperly by someone in the industry over his beliefs first. i still will not like him though because if such is true retaliation in such manner would still be highly inappropriate.

Are you the body president of the jack thompson fan club or something? Either that or you're Thompson himself, and I do know this kind of behaviour goes along with his tactics hand-in-hand.

You need to stop defending him. He broke the rules repeatedly, he annoyed and aggravated a lot of people, and he insisted on repeated and ever more frivolous lawsuits. Even when a killing had nothing to do with a game, he said OH IT'S COZ OF VIDEO GAMES LOLOLOLOL. There's even that time he made a bet with someone for $10 grand about a video game (he'd donate it to charity if someone made his game). Someone called him on that and made the game. Do you think he paid up?

Of course not. He said he was "joking". So the penny arcade guys wrote a cheque for $10K, signed it "For Jack Thompson, because Jack Thompson wouldn't" and sent it to a charity. He threatened to sue them. They sent him a bunch of flowers. He charged them with harassment.

If you want to defend this man's reprehensible, childish and unbalanced behaviour, be my guest. You'll be the only one, though, and it won't help you to cry foul when people call you for the dumb***** you are.

True, I admit it wasn't a good idea to call everyone unintelligent (dumb actually) but that doesn't prove that they aren't. If you're looking for validation that you're not dumb and you are emotionally distraught by my comment then I'm sorry, your not dumb :)

I don't know if I can agree with this comment, I think most people believe what ever the news or media tells (which is frightening) them be it either through TV or news paper. Just look at how many people think that 911 wasn't an inside job.

Most complicated law on Earth? That's an opinion (you've checked into every other countries laws or was that meant as an exaggeration?) I still feel as though you're blasting away about all these accomplishments you have in life as a way of finding some sort of validation or sense of self worth, if that's the case let me save you some years of wasted time, what your looking for doesn't come from you accomplish, it comes from who you are.

Please don't misunderstand Miss, I'm not by any mean defending the guy, He's getting what he's got coming to him, just look at his career, he's always been about controversy. My only goal was to get anyone without a narrow mind to hear a particular interview in which he's doesn't actually seem like a douche at all. Now does that mean the media portrails of him are lies, well it wouldn't be surprising, the media has blatantly lied before, and it's not like anyone of us has this amazing intimate knowlegde about the guy to begin with, we only know what who he is because of how the media paints him, end of story. So in closing I don't nor do I support this guys "perceived" behavior, Nor would I support anyone that I don't closely know, I only wanted to offer a differing perspective.
