Comparison photo: PSP slim screen versus PSP-3000 screen

Ok, so when the PSP-3000 was announced back in Leipzig, a lot of us were "wuh?" over the supposed "changes" in this model. A "crisper" screen and a mic? How sad. Does that even deserve the name 3000?

Well, don't knock it till you try it. New photos from Famitsu show off just how "crisp" the 3000's screen actually is when compared with the Slim:

PSP-3000 - Image 1

Nice, eh? Anyway, here's how Sony described the new screen and the mic of the PSP-3000, in case you're curious:
  • The LCD screen will have a wider color gamut and higher contrast ratio to deliver deeper, more vibrant colors, as well as anti-reflection technology so you can see the screen more clearly when playing outdoors. As you all know, the PSPÂ’s screen is a key strength of the hardware, and this update adds an absolutely dazzling LCD screen to the handheld.
  • A built-in microphone allows for Skype calls and multi-player gaming communication directly from the hardware - eliminating the need for attaching a separate headset.

I always hate trying to play outside with the current PSP, wish they would of had this with the slim to begin with but the anti-reflection is really nice so is the built in mic.

That's quite impressive (and I'm looking at it using a desktop LCD which is probably inferior to the PSP-3000's screen). Do they even make desktop LCD monitors like that?

Would be great if they also included the phat in this comparison (I was always curious if there was any improvement from the phat's screen to the slim's screen).

if the screen is interchangable with the original PSP's screen.

Doubt I will try it since I would like to get one and rely on the warranty if needed rather then fix another unit, but longterm I would be interested.

The screen needs more power. To make up for it the 3000 series will use a more powerfull battery.

Of course they made it look like that to attract consumers but there's only very little probability it would really be like that. I remember them saying that about slim when they compared it to the phat!

look how the psp 3000 really did make difference, although the screen is lot better still dont think it was worth making a new psp model, im not really excited for the psp 3000 to come out, and for the one who are curious it is gonna take more from the battery, but that why the made the 4000 mah battery that is another thing coming with the 3000\, correct em if im wrong:(

The PS logo has been removed on the 3000 and the SONY logo has switched sides. It also looks like the SONY logo is lit on the 3000.

That would greatly increase the number of things they could be hacked to do (and performance of Linux on the PS3), so I'm in.

It's about time they included a hard disk as well. That, for me, is the only thing which could convince me to upgrade my PSP a second time. Maybe a nice 20gb.

Of course they make LCD monitors like that. The monitors I use in our production studio are a bit more serious than a gaming "toy". And have a much quicker response time.

Just don't buy cheap monitors, is all I can say.

I for one prefer the older screen. Or at least what it does on paper. I prefer the more natural tones, and yes a higher colour gamut does mean more natural tones... And maybe it's that pic but it looks oversaturated.

Also there's more shine on the PSP slim's outer case too. I'm not entirely calling shenanigans but this is a PR shot after all so I'm not fully trusting the contrast between the 2 screens will be this great.

Though the response time does bother me on the PSP. I bought a Slim hoping that ghosting would be eliminated... Sadly no. If only they pulled a Nintendo and put a better screen in their FIRST revision (2000 model), rather that stagger updates. A poor practice IMO.

Sony has officially announced that it will be retro retitling all its models so from next month all PSP models will be known thus:

the PSP1000 will be retitled the "PSP-sorry-we-made-it-too-fat-and-chunky"

the PSP-2000 is now "PSP-ok-we-fixed-it-now-you-can-put-it-in-your-pocket"

the PSP-3000 is going to become the "PSP-ok-sorry-bit-of-a-*****-up-right-now-this-is-really-it-is-the-ultimate-final-last-word-in-sony-hand-held-gaming-thank-you-for-shelling-out-400-bucks-on-the-last-2-unfinished-"BETA"-versions-though-you-may-want-to-start-saving-for-the-PSP-4000-due-early-next-year"

the PSP-4000 will be titled "PSP-i'm-a-brain-dead-moron-with-money-to-burn-on-products-that-have-taken-the-concept-of-planned-obsolescence-to-new-heights"

this looks to me like more light was shone on the older psp, the psp 3000 has no bright highlights round the buttons or casing, not many anhow.....NOWHERE near the same amount as are showing on the psp 3000....

the bottom one is photographed fine, but if you switched the psps & took the same foto the newer psp (3000) wouldnt look so vibrant.,...BELIEVE!!!

i gotta psp slim & it still looks brand new, got it on launch day & dont wanna change it....F@CK this sorta progress, let me buy an official mini mic & change settings in firmware for brightnbess/gamma/contrast...

come on sony, were not pr!cks, we know your firmwares malleable, so give it some stretchin b4 dark alex enhances your screen & embaresses you EEEEEVEN MORRRRE ;-)

hey dipshi7 We wouldn't even be talking here if the Phat hadn't changed handhelds forever....the fact is the Phat was a better built system than the slim and...Im goin out on a limb....better than the 3000!!! The parts are crappy leaving the slim felling like a toy with minimal improvements and a generic end product the 3000 will be more of the same. So until you design a better system that will change the market....put your slim where the sun doesn't shine and ask your mom for the 3000, I would prefer it cause I'll need another Phat when mine finally gives out.

I agree. I couldn't stand the PSP-1000's dpad, and the ghosting! SFA3 was the worst game to play on that since it needed a fast response rate and good dpad (Capcom released a fix after all).

The 2000 is my fave. That extra memory really does work, playing games like MHF2 and the likes really are better at loading. And of course they're much lighter and much more portable.

Hated the 1000. What a stain that was, and of course Sony's quality control letting all them dead pixels out. Surprised there wasn't a class action lawsuit like the PS2 laser had!

I'll stick with a 2000 but will buy a 3000 replacement screen for it. Perhaps the higher capacity battery too (if they fit).

And a MEGA LOL to Ieland56 who doesn't class ALL gaming machines, all systems meant to play fantasty/fictional games as nothing more than toys. They are toys! They are playthings for kids and adults!

Holy crap kid I was just asking if the D-Pad was going to suck, you wrote a paragraph crying to me about your feelings on why you think your phat is better then the slim because you can't afford it. But Hell, I'll bite. I understand you're upset because you're obviously threatened by change, the Phat was a better built system? Dude, it had IR. That's it. Feeling like a toy? Pretty amazing considering the battery life is longer on the slim, brighter screen, faster load times, and better D-Pad. You're right, the phat is a much better system because it can do so many things the slim can't. Like uh, turn TV's on and off.

...Why didn't I see it your way before?

Anyone who has used a psp without a faceplate on knows thats not a new screen. Thats just a slim screen without the cover plate on. If u remove the plastic from the front of the screen, there is no glare, it looks more vibrant, but it absorbs dust, and is very, very easy to ruin.

If u want your old screen to look like that, remove the peice of the faceplate that covers the screen, looks great, just see what happens when u pocket it.

you guys who say this is not a good upgrade for a psp 3000 need to get a laptop.

thats right i said it, if youwant to hack nuclear arms and order pizza all on the same device, its a laptop. not a psp.

the psp 3000 is good, and ill buy one if i have the money. i own a phat now, and never liked the slim really. the only feature the slim had that i was interested in was video output, but sony couldnt get that right.

also, another feature of the psp 300 are its internal speaker configuration. i dont know if theyre changing the speakers at all, but they are in a more sane location. the old psp's had speaker holes on the bottom if youll notice, this one has them on the front, right where you can put your thumb over them to mute them if you need to, before, i had to stuff this thing into my beergut to shut it up fast.

this machine also should ahve a screen switch to turn the bugger off, and a mute button. imho.

cloudnine, you're a chipper little fellow aren't you?

Does picking apart and analyzing the detritus of other people posts give you some sense of superiority?

Well, whatever floats your boat.

My point, if indeed I had one was that every system upgrade is an admission that the previous system was far from the be all end all killer app it was marketed as,

so I thought maybe sony could change their marketing campaign to something more sincere like,

"Dude, get your own, and then get another and another, because we haven't got it right yet "

No i wont buy one when it becomes obsolete, though I'm a fan of obsolescence (thats why I'm talking to you;)

my sense of self esteem isn't fragile enough to be eroded by the fact that my psp is 12 micro grams heavier or my screen is 10 candle power duller than the guy's sitting next to me. sorry to disappoint you, anyhoo have fun dissecting my post.

I bought the fat PSP. Costed me 250.

I bought the Slim. Costed me 200.

Already that's 450 dollars plus tax on the same handhelds just that the Slim has more features.

SONY's history is releasing a original fat model then a Slim that offers a little bit more appeal and features and definitely makes the upgrade worth it.

Confident that the 2000 model was my final PSP investment here they go releasing anh unhackable Slim with a new screen and a mic. They want me to pay another 200 for that? No way. They got 450 dollars out of me which I'll never get back. Now tell me, with the puny amount of new features, I'm supposed to buy that? If you say yes, than your a wasteful idiot. You don't -7uck with a mans hard earned money.

The reason the top one(PSP-2000) looks so bad is the light reflection, if you read the article you'd have seen that the PSP-3000's screen is easier to see amongst light reflections. Plus the 3000 has a better contrast ratio and I'll bet it has a better response time!

for all you people b1tching and complaining about the psp3000, how its such a minor update to the system, how your disappointed feature A or feature B wasnt included and how its such a minor update it doesnt justify spending 200 to get it.

heres a simple solution. DONT BUY IT!!! sony is not making and marketing a new psp for all the CURRENT psp owners. wake the F up. No one is forcing you to buy the newer model, no one is saying it will make your existing model obsolete.

i see numerous people here in the comments advising not to get it, saying they wont bother upgrading since they already own a 1k, 2k etc etc. thats great! keep your system, your all acting like sony is letting you down. i will say it again, there are NOT trying to get all the folk out there who just bought psp slims etc to now go and buy this system. its just another revision.

quoting someone from here

"Confident that the 2000 model was my final PSP investment here they go releasing anh unhackable Slim with a new screen and a mic. They want me to pay another 200 for that? "

sony does not want you to do anything, they already have your money and are happy with that. and if all you do with your hackable system is emulate, then why the hell ***** at an unhackable system, its not like you would be playing ISO's on it right? and also there is no features you obviously want in it to warrant spending the extra money on it.

so my point being to all you complainers. sony is not updating the system for all the people who own one, there adding features they feel would benefit the psp for NEW owners (or those who justify shelling out the cash to buy the latest model psp). The whole point in it being unhackable, well you have your existing model which does ALL THAT, which im sure your completely happy with. Stop complaining about the features that werent included, and obviously wouldnt be (I.E. HDD and second analog). Stop saying sony "wants you to pay" for an upgrade you dont feel is an upgrade.

You dont want it, dont buy it. And STFU in the process.

now.. let the flames begin..

Even if I was on an oficcial firmware PSP SLim and this new PSP came out, why would I cash in another 200 bucks for a slightly better screen and a mic. There's no second analog, harddrive, better Wifi antennae, or even an L2 and R2. I wont buy it but that idiot cloudine which you pretty much sound like is trying to get everyone against me. Look at how he's trying to flame me becaus I don't want to waste my money. I will only buy it if it's hacked and when I'm sure that they aren't gonna release another one. did you even read my post? YOU need to chill out. NO ONE IS MAKING YOU BUY THIS NEW PSP!! end of story!!

No one is forcing you to "cash in another 200 bucks" to get this updated version. Why are you freaking out about it?

I know im sure as he1l not trying to get everyone against you. Im pointing out that your b1tching and complaining for no good reason.

No one is trying to belittle you, or say anything against you because you dont want to waste your money. That is your opinion.

For your sake i will repeat this. Sony IS NOT TRYING TO MAKE YOU BUY THIS NEW PSP!! They are doing another revision to the unit, perhaps to try and draw new customers, or perhaps because they god damn feel like it. Mabey the old LCD screens they used are no longer getting manufactured and by luck of the draw they have to put a new one in. Who the F knows.

All i know is your b1tching and moaning about a system which you feel is not up to YOUR standards, which left out features YOU felt should be in it.

For reasons stated above and also before on numerous topics. Sony WILL NOT put in another second analog stick. Sony WILL NOT put in a internal HDD. This would be cause for A NEW PSP, not a REVISION!! L2 or R2, common have some sense, all these features you want would make this newer PSP not be backwards compatible with the older versions in terms of new games released. THIS WOULD HURT SONY MORE THAN HELP THEM! Understand some F'in basic economics.

And no one is saying we're "rich bastards". ***** im still on my psp1001 and im loving it, i dont see a need to upgrade to a newer version because it does EVERYTHING I NEED OF IT. If you feel ripped off, gyped, hurt or damaged because Sony is releasing a revision of the PSP, and you feel you shouldnt have to spend your hard earned cash on it. DONT, dont buy it. I'm not saying anyone's forcing me to buy the system, I just don't want to be misrepresented by cloud boy and you. I'm entitled to what I want to do with my money and noone has the right to take away my opinion.

I can see why you're laughing at how I said wife and job, cause you're gay and plan to be jobless little boy.

Unlike you, I have good social skills and can talk to women. You're immature especially since you want to argue on the internet over an opinion that belongs to me. You definitely are braver behind a computer. You could never say this $hit to my face and walk away in good shape.

Why don't you have a beer you chauvinistic, money wasting idiot. Have something positive to say or move on. Go marry cloudboy if you want a good companion, but don't talk about someone's life you know nothing of you basement troll.

How do you like your LULZ jerk!!

wow. . .

didnt know it could mute itslef and turn the screen off. . .my laptop cant turn its screen off. . .

in my defense my bro bought me this psp back when they were new, and i have long since thrown away any documentation. i dusted it off when i was looking for an easy way to write quick beats and stumbled across a neat little thing called traxxpad. it was then that i started messing with my psp again, and shortly thereafter that i began looking into homebrew and downgraders. luckily, it had been sitting in the closet long enough that the firmware i let it slip into the shadows with was long since cracked.

though i had thrown the manual away long ago.

but seriously is it the bit about the laptop, the speakers, or my lack of manual knowyness that caused you all to vote my previous comment into oblivion lol. . . shame on you all :P

Another troll eh. To unoriginal so he likes to twist words. You're just like your boyfriends cloud and digi. You guys must not believe in the first amendment. You believe that no one is entitled to an opinion. I'll see you in hell while I'll be right here dip$hit!

Funny analogy, but I believe the same can be said for almost all consumer electronic devices. Besides, if games playable on the PSP-3000 are still playable on the PSP-1000, then what's the big deal, really?

# Sony IS NOT TRYING TO MAKE YOU BUY THIS NEW PSP!!aerischan 2008-08-26 07:45
Sure they are. They're not forcing anyone to buy it, though, merely enticing. If their marketing campaign works, that means more money for them. Sony's a multi-billion dollar corporation, not a non-profit organization.

I've got a US PSP-1001 (w/Spiderman 2), Ceramic White JP PSP-1000, Crisis Core Limited Edition JP PSP-2000 and Felicia Blue JP PSP-2000 and depending on how much better the screen is, I'll probably get this one, too (and succeeding iterations) once it gets hacked or when Sony finally includes features I want into their base firmware.

*gasp* Terribly wasteful of me, I know, but it's my choice if I want to be a wasteful idiot.

You don't seem to get it. I'm not calling anyone who wants to buy this a wasteful idiot. I'm saying that I wont buy one because I feel that for someone like me who has the 2000 model, these meager features are not worth the upgrade. Idiots like cloud and digi seem to think that I am not entitled to my opinion and how I should spend my money. I know well enough that SONY isn't forcing me to buy one. I just don't want one. Where's the second analogue stick, where's the hard drive, Where's the extra ram? Those are features worth upgrading for.

dude, im not saying your not entitled to your own opinion at all. freedom of speech rocks (btw im not an american so your 1st amendment thingy means nothing to me), all im saying is that you seem to be complaining about features that you felt should be included. im not saying you should spend your hard earned cash on this minuscule update. as i said above, im still on a 1k. i dont see the need to update. im not trying to tell you how to spend your money, im really not, i dont give 1 sh1t about it.

as for the internal HDD and the second analog stick. *sigh* . those would not be included in a psp REVISION. key word, REVISION. If an internal HDD were in the works, as well as a second analog stick, those would be features that would constitute a NEW psp, IE psp2 or whatever the hell sony wants to call it.

and for calling me gay for pointing out the faults in your posts, saying im a basement troll etc etc. common bud, quite resorting to insult tactics to belittle me. i dont care what the hell you call me. if it makes you feel bigger as a person great.

all im pointing out is that you have been doing nothing but B1TCHING about this update from the get go. im not trying to take away your opinion, im not saying its wrong. im just pointing out simple facts.

calling me a gay little jobless boy who has no social skillz is just resorting to insult tactics which only makes yourself look like a fool on these boards. yes i admit the wife insult i posted was low and harsh. however saying what you say is completely rediculous. were not 14 anymore.

Dude, let it go. I'm entitled to what I feel my money's worth. If this thing can be hacked or SONY adds some more features to it or something that makes this 3000 model a good move, then I may buy it. Everyone's acting like idiots over my opinion. Why can't these hypocrites get that. I'm definitely not 14 just because I want to defend my opinion. I'm a grown man with rights just like anyone else. Cloud especially seems to act as if this world should be communist.
