Common Sense Media renews Manhunt 2 boycott calls - Image 1

It should be remembered that San Francisco-based non-government organization Common Sense Media recently released an advisory regarding the impending launch of Manhunt 2 (Nintendo Wii, PSP) in the United States. The group is calling all parents to boycott what it refers to as the "most violent and gruesome video game ever produced for a mass market."

In that same advisory, Common Sense Media also mentioned that it will hold a press conference later today where they will further discuss why parents shouldn't allow their children to play Manhunt 2. Just a couple of hours before the event, the NGO sent in a revised version of the press release to the gaming media.

At first glance, we believed that the revised press release contains more "fighting" words to further increase the impact of its call to parents. Aside from that, the PR material also contains an indirect response to Take-Two Interactive's initial answer to Common Sense Media's call. That part reads:

Common Sense believes that parents, educators, and other consumers would benefit from knowing what specific parts of the game were edited or removed to get the rating reduced, but information about the re-rating process has been very limited...

Given that the edited version of the game has been rated M in the U.S. yet banned in the U.K., as well as the fact that an apparently unedited version of the game is available to download online, Common Sense wants to make sure that parents, educators and all potential consumers know that this game should be kept out of the hands of all children and teens.

Manhunt 2 is scheduled to be released tomorrow, October 31. With Rockstar Games and Take-Two Interactive having gained the go signal of the ratings board, organizations such as Common Sense Media has no other resolved but to urge consumers to boycott the video game.

» Morons

These people should be attacked by terrorists.

That way, everyone is happy.

The terrorists successfully bombed something, and we are happy too.

They should also attack Green Peace.

» o.O

Maybe your family / girlfriend / boyfriend should suffer in a terrorist attack so that you learn the meaning of terror.

» .

I'm tired of this activist group dragging my good name through the mud.

What's the point really? Aren't overly concerned parents already stopping their kids from buying M rated games?

» I have to agree

QJ that is not a very nice move ^^

Total in the contrary of what the original article wanted.

» Crazy Offended Parents

All they do is try to take away rights from others, which has happened several times in the past. Such groups are nothing, but a joke in my honest opinion. If parents are easily offended by such material, they shouldn't make others suffer.

This is one of the reasons why the freedom of choice is vanishing (yet another opinion of mine). Spent my two cents.

» Yuk

This game looks disgusting, disturbing and sickening... I WANT IT! Has anyone here successfully downloaded it yet?

» Just curious

I'm just curious, since parents "shouldn't" buy this game for their children, how is this really a true boycott? Isn't a boycott when you totally don't want the product in the marketplace, yet they say it's because children shouldn't play it? Doesn't really make sense to me, but I think that is what these groups try to do sometimes is create confusion. The only problem with this senario, is that sometimes it can actually increase sales. If they really wanted to keep this game from being successful, they should have just tried to cause a media blackout instead.

» Common sense?

What exactly are they boycotting? Parent's buying an adult rated game for their children?

er....

How about instead of demonstrating a total lack of COMMON SENSE and drawing attention to the most irresponsible game to ever exist (sorry but i do think manhunt is a PoS), they actually use some COMMON SENSE and educate dip***** parents who would otherwise buy any adult game for their children, about what the ratings mean!?

Idiots.

» uh huh

Even though I disagree that Manhunt is the more "irresponsible" game ever, I do agree that these groups should pay less attention to one instance (Manhunt), and focus more on education. It is "common sense" that education goes a lot further than "banning".

» I agree with Loonix

Real life violence will only prove to these groups that these games can cause violence. Remember that.
