Codemasters threats to sue P2P users, sending warning emails already |
Ó
To be quite frank about it, video game piracy is very rampant on the Internet. This includes simple things such as hacks and mods to the blatant downloading of full retail copies over peer-to-peer websites. However, it seems that this will stop soon as the latest move from Codemasters indicate that it is not only targetting the operators of such websites but its costumers as well.
Accordingly, the company has acquired the services of law firm Davenport Lyons to do the legal battle for them. The reports added that the first casualties of this move are going to be BT and PlusNet subscribers.
It was also mentioned that Codemasters' lawyers have already obtained a court order under the Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act for ISPs to hand over an unknown number of customer details.
On the other hand, there have been some complaints about this recent development. Several Internet users are now complaining that they have received an email from Codemasters even though they didn't download anything. Here's part of a consumer's complaint:
I have received a letter saying I have downloaded a file called Colin McRae Dirt for the Xbox 360 and they want me to pay 511 GBP (US$ 1,036.76) to them. Having checked my computer to my knowledge, I have not downloaded any such file and do not have it on my computer.
They sent me five letters all about the same game but with different IP addresses and different times. I'm not sure what to do they want a response in 14 days and they want me to sign saying I did it and won't do it again.
Both Codemasters and the lawyers of Davenport Lyons were unable to comment on the matter.

HAHAHHAHAHA, Oh you wacky QJ writers. Crack me up every time.
The RIAA cant stop music piracy, The MPAA cant stop Movie piracy. Many have tried whilst making bold claims such as this. The end result is nothing, A lot of muscle flexing and big words with no result.
I appreciate the scare tactics but anybody with a brain knows this is all wishful thinking.

Unlike console specific games, PC games always run badly (poorly, performance-wise) because PC games have to be compatible with hundreds of different PC specifications; but consoles games are optimized for one platform (because the developers are only making the game for one hardware, they can get the most out of the said console).
- PC with Windows operating systems: 60% of all system power (CPU, vid card, RAM, etc) are always used for the operating system and vital key components.
- Console: Almost all power is only used to run the game (so many mor+ns like you think a PC has better vid card (GPU power) than a console (PS3 or X360); no you d+mbf+ck, PC gaming is already dead; PS3’s vid card (RSX) is one year old, but still more powerful than currently the best PC vid card – nVidia GeForce 8K ultra (other versions are cheaper, ultra version is most expensive, and it’s $1,060 – tax inclusive), why? because GeForce 8K’s 60% of all power is always used for your OS (Windows); if you want to know exactly how powerful RSX is, it’s mentioned below.
Software! Software! Software!!!
When all those best, blockbuster, groundbreaking games are only made for consoles, there’s zero reason to waste away even $1 for PC in any regards. The best PC exclusive game is Garbagesis (Crysis).
I read a statistics months ago and it said about 99.5% of all PCs in the entire world are not suitable for 'power gaming' (only 0.002% of all PCs are considered as ‘cutting-edge gaming PCs’ which can run the newest PC games (for instance, Crysis) while maintaining both smooth frame rate and good graphics quality).
You must waste away several thousands of dollars if you want to build up (it means you buy parts separately) a ‘gaming PC’. Then you must waste thousands more bucks to upgrade parts annually!!! If you buy a console, let's say a PS3, this PS3 can last for 5+ years. Your PS3 even in 5 years can run all the newest and most demanding blockbuster games because of the reasons mentioned in this article.
In addition to that, a PS3 is only a few hundred dollars, but it includes groundbreaking technologies like Blu-ray player (the future!!!), Cell processor, RSX vid card (this vid card is more powerful then two nVidia GeForce 6K cards combined; one GeForce 6K card was $500 when it was first released!!!).
Cell chip! The best CPU for a PC is 'Intel Core 2 Extreme QX6850 Quad-Core' at $1,320 (tax inclusive, if you disagree and say we can buy a Quad-Core CPU for $800, then you illiterate (read the number, 6850) are talking about weaker versions which are below QX6850; and I’m talking about the most expensive version called QX6850). PC gaming industry is totally loser, why? because PS3's Cell processor is 9.8 times more powerful than this said Quad-Core garbage. PS3's CPU is as powerful as ten Intel's QX6850 Quad-Core CPUs combined.

Anyhow, I hope they don't attack megaupload or rapidshare...
Um, for reasons that are totally unrelated to piracy... Yeah...

Oh, wait... I got that mixed up... Piracy was freakin easy, it's just that the games were so horrible, no one bothered
Anyhow, what about the PSP? Have they found a way to run homebrew on that? If so, are there any websites that I can go to get info? I heard about a site called PSPUPDATES... Is that a good site to check out? If so, what's the exact address? I typed in pspudates.com, and nothing happened? Please help.

Blu-ray IS leading right now worldwide (MS suffers heavily outside the united states). Yea there's a 5-1 HD-DVD to Blu-Ray ratio of "STANDALONE" players. But you're missing one huge detail, THE PS3. Consumer's would rather buy a ps3 any day over a standalone which can cost over twice as much and do half the stuff a ps3 can do. And if you haven't noticed, reports of blockbuster and other stores are coming in saying that they are dropping the HD-DVD format for the Blu-ray because of higher sales of blu-ray. You would be surprised at how intelligently and clever SONY handled the ps3, you think its just coincidence that their own standalone blu-ray players are so much more expensive than the ps3. It's an obvious marketing gimmick, to get a larger install base ofcourse. And with their recent price drops (and more to come as analyst say) PS3 is quickly doing what it's former brethren did during their reign.

Was it a joke by any chance? If it was, congratz, it was HILARIOUS. If it wasn't, I pity you.
To QJ, what is with all the spelling errors in this article? Threats? Costumers? Proof-read and use spell-check next time Ryan A.

One Ahole stated that its only a crime if your caught??? all i can say is get a life.
or should i say I will come rob your appartment when your out for a beer, its cool , this is not a crime because i can get away with it?
whatever, the real unfortunate thing about the whole issue is that there are some very good torrent sites and many offer an avenue to Film music and opinion that is often banned by our local authorities. That these sites have people posting items that others feel is damaging their potential earnings is a problem but not one that can be stopped with lawsuits. The lawsuits force many sites to close down. This is for me offensive as many sites offer a freedom of voice opinion and material that others governments often try to negate.
When this happens all that is left is a governmental grey soup of BS and sites that are genuinely offensive and should be closed down.
When the future will be pay per play I can only assume that those that are trying to stop the inevitable are just damaging the future possibilites.
I feel that these companies should embrace the technology and work with it to find a suitable manner in which to protect their intellectual rights rather than just lash out and bash at the systems that if used well would be to their benefit.
I purchased Halflife a few years ago and once installed had to visit the website. I typed in my serial number and received via e-mail the code to activate my game. It worked perfectly and the system was secure. I had my game, developers got their money.
Codemasters, go get some internet savvy people in your employee ranks rather than just developers and shareholders that cry that their ROI is not as high as expected.

goto the peer window
you can see all the IP addresses you are getting the file off
its there property and so they do have the right to enquire where the download is coming from and going to
and this is all they'de do
download their own file and see who's seeding
write down the IP's and start enquiries

Make a game console that uses completely propriety optical media! And, allow no use of memory sticks, besides the internal ones, and they should only support at most 16 MB (with ZIP compression, 16 MB is more than enough). Or, if they'll be external, then they'd better be proprietry (i.e. a VMU or something like the PS1-2's weird propriety memory cards). Also, no USB ports... They're an open invitation to piracy!!! Note that the PSP would have been hack proof... IF it didn't have it's weak link: the universal memory stick pro duo...
Likewise, if all the directions above are followed, it'll be impossible to do piracy, or at least impossible for the average user. For example: the game cube was a prime candidate for being hack proof... BUT, they used a regular DVD drive... so pirates immediate took advantage of that fact and h4xxed it. Also, do not tell me "What about the nintendo DS? It uses nothing you mentioned above, but it still got hacked!"
Exactly... that's why I said that it should only use OPTICAL media. Good luck inserting an ISO filled memory stick onto the optical media...
As far as I know, the only way that you can beat such a system is by making a "freeloader" or "swapmagic" type system. Of course, even this is hard to do, since if they're using propriety optical media, good luck finding a suitable burner to make it....
So yeah, kind of like the blue ray post above mine... since people don't have bluray, they can't make pirated games (although, as time has showed us before, the first cracks will involve people releasing ripped copies that will fit on DVD-DL, which CAN be read on the PS3; just as the "uncrackable" DC was cracked because it was able to read CD-Rs...
Oh yeah, and in addition, there will have to be an un-universal connector to which you'll have to connect a propriety router... That way, none of that "streaming over wifi" crap that some people will try to pull.
So, provided that
a. the system uses unique optical media (like the sony "universal" media drive)
b. Does NOT allow for any outside connections (no USB/Firewire)
c. Does NOT use universal media for input (memory sticks, or in XBOX's case, USB flash drives)
d. Has some kind of anti swapping mechanism (such as forcing the console off... AND ERASING ANY SYSTEM RAM... upon the drive being opened)
e. If it shares any optical drive abilities (such as playing blu ray or DVD movies), then they must have a ROM chip that allows it to function only while the console is in a crippled "DVD only" state, where the graphics card is not enabled completely, thus removing any chances of people trying to use the DVD portion of the console to play pirated games. Basically, if Sony didn't do this, expect the first pirated games to be RIPPED ISOS that run off of DVD-DL media!
f. a strict online system, which will not allow any "weird" data to flow to the console. If it doesn't seem like signed (?encrypted?) data streaming from a legitimate online session, then the console will reject it. Thus, people can't use the Phantasy Star streaming method that they used on the Game Cube.
Thus, even with internal modchips installed, unless the modchip somehow miraculously allows games to run off of the internal harddrive (...how are you going to put games in that harddrive anyhow, considering how there's no interface for you to connect your PC or any custom media to it?), the system will be pretty much hack proof. Of course, there's only one way to do it: if the modchip has like 10 GB of onboard storage, then it can inject some code to force the console to run the game... but come on... who's gonna open/close their video game system each time they want to play a different game?....
Of course, if you can find a way to hack this system, please, do tell me. As far as I know, this procedure, while adding an extra $20 to each system, will make it very hack proof.
Let's just hope that none of the companies are reading this. If the

Imagine this scenario:
You are in a poor village. Your neighbor has a well, and at night he burns a nice warm fire in front of his house. No one else can afford fire, but only he has it, and he sells it for outrageous prices...
Anyhow, one day, you're really thirsty. You have a little bit of money, and consider buying a bottle of water from the local merchant. However, you realize that you can get the water for cheaper, if you just steal it from the neighbor. In addition to that, you go and get some more, and share it with your livestock and your friends. Is this theft? Heck ya! Because
a. you were going to spend money on it, but decided not to, just to save some money. (likewise, if you KNOW you needed some software, and you pirate just to save money, that's theft)
b. the neighbor has lost a portion of his water! he has incurred an actual loss!
Likewise, this is the same thing as going to a store, and stealing a CD or a DVD physically.
Now, later that night, it gets really, really cold. You have a blanket, and it's ok. You notice the neighbor is being a capitalistic pig dog, and is offering to sell rights to allowing you to sit by the fire. However, you aren't entitled to take any of the fire to your house (via lanterns, for example) because he says that's "piracy", since he made the fire, and he has all rights to it. You decide that this is stupid. He has unlimited fire, and he doesn't lose anything if you steal it, since it's not something you were going to buy anyway (like the water from earlier). So, you sneak out, sit by the fire when he's not looking, and grab a stick from your house, and light your own fireplace. You then share this fire with all your friends.
Is this theft? The capitalistic pig dog neighbor would say "Yes, because you stole my fire. I made the fire, so you owe me money", while the pirates would say "Hey, wait a minute! You lost nothing! You've still got an unlimited amount of fire right there! I wasn't going to buy the stuff to begin with, so it's not like you're losing any money!"
I tend to side with the fire side of the story: the pig dogs lose no money when software is being pirated. However, if you were going to buy a game, BUY IT! Example: the only game I think is good is Brawl. Thus, I'll probably buy it. All the other games... I wasn't planning on buying them, so while my sporadic piracy allows me to get a "profit", at the same time, the companies aren't going to lose anything, since either way I wasn't going to buy it.

most of what i regularly pirate are Japanese games that importers usually double the price on. licensing laws from japan don't work here and i cant buy it for a fair price so internet is my option.
sure its wrong but if you take the well example:
-make the well a fresh water ocean
-and make the village a large fraction of the world.
you cant keep track of and punish all of them and it only hurts your already "suffering" profits. pirating is as old as time, you cant stop it.

BUT, if you steal the actual code, of which they have an unlimited supply of, (like the fire), then screw it, it's not really theft or if it is, it's not immoral.

Not to mention my IP doesn't point directly to me, it points to my ISP who would then have to release my information to them, which he won't due to the lack of a contract.
On another note, if you think piracy is bad, ITS NOT, because I wouldn't buy most of the games I download anyways. IF you think piracy accounts for the loss of funds for game companies, THINK AGAIN. Realize the fact that sale losses from piracy are sales that would most likely never happen. THINK: USED GAMES, THOSE are sales that would have been sales, but instead I wait a week for the price to drop 10$ instead of buying my own copy, then resell it for 10$ less is that NOT AS BAD as piracy? Please, change your flow of thinking.

(Ex: 1 guy downloads game, would never buy the game in the first place.
Another guy downloads the game, then buy it because he likes it.
Another guy downloads the game illegally
Another guy downloads the game, but deletes it.)
Ex:2nd guy buys the game 60$
3rd guy buys the game for 50$ from the 2nd guy
4th guy buys the game for 40$ from the 3rd guy
ect.)
Clearly in this example they both loose sales in the same way, and have only provided 60$ back to the company.

i have read they make 9bucks an hour.
i have over 100 psp iso's and cso's... and allmost all of them suck. i support piracy, because MOST of the games duck donkeynutz, and they aren't worth 2 squirl farts. i cant wait to get a 360 mod chip. 60 bucks for a game? halo 3 SUCKED. i beat it in 1 day, and i didn't even play all night! games are overpriced, and untill they get reasonable, pirates (AND ME) will continue to rape them all day
