Children prefer violence in their video games |
Ó
Nowadays, despite people zealously "protecting" children from exposure to violence, more and more kids are getting exposed anyway. The hard fact is this: the youth are getting their fix of violence from different media - especially movies as well as video games - and they like it.A new study, published in the Journal of Adolescent Health, tried to find out how popular or widespread violent video games are among American children. A research team from Harvard Medical School, Massachusetts General Hospital and Michigan State University surveyed a total of 1,254 students hailing from Pennsylvania and South Carolina, ages ranging from 12-14 years old.
The results of the study will probably make Jack Thompson weep. Most of the boys, as well as girls, have played ESRB-rated Mature games, with the boys mostly playing Grand Theft Auto and Halo. Girls also played Grand Theft Auto, with the game even coming in as the second most played game by girls.
About 60 percent of the children studied agreed with the statement "I play electronic games because there's nothing else to do." While over half of the boys who participated in the study agreed that "I play electronic games because I like guns and weapons."
While parents and other authorities who claim that they intend only the best for the children, it should be noted that apart from video games, there are other sources of violence that can be found almost anywhere. The latest Die Hard movie, for instance, is rated PG-13 and yet, it's chock-full of violent scenes.
So what do you think? Should the authorities lighten up on video games?

OBVIOUS NEWS IS *****ING OBVIOUS
stfu with the racist comments.
NO U
ah cmon , thats just the puberty !
children from 12-14 love violence because parents hate it !
thats so obvious !
of course they love it !
when getting older , they will realize , that its not violence , but the fun , that makes the game !
I think it's better that kids get it out of them by playing video games...I mean, the games teach as well. Lets take GTA as an example, I'll check my cheatless GTA:VCS file now...
Ok, been wasted 23 times and busted 14, screwed over by pretty much everyone and I'm a wanted criminal. I'm really looking forward to a life of crime now yeah. If anything this is a deterrent. I'm tired of all this bs being blamed on video games, it's a huge injustice and the industry suffers greatly.
I played GTA, the original one, when I was 11 and I'd say the games have got cleaner (for example an old mission I recall "My ***** wife wants me to take the *****ing kids this weekend, see her ass goodbye. Her van is parked outside, plant the bomb and wait"), just the graphics allow for a better show of the "bad" things in the game.
I don't see what's wrong with kids preferring violent games, it's entertaining. Look at TV programs such as Jackass, it's the same principal, you get a kick out of the pain because it's extreme.
While underage boys want sex that they saw on media that much don't mean that they should be allowed to screw around.
this news is so obvious i don't know why QJ posts such bull its very annoying!
kids should be allowed to play violent video games but i think that GTA SA is taking gang violence too far and more kids will start to get persuaded to join a gang.(Just a possibility)
The only GTA i think is prefered for kids are GTA:VC GTA:LCS and GTA:VCS i think these games will make them think about being in a gang or not.
just my opinion:)
It's hardly like 12-14 year olds are going to watch disney films and play crappy puzzle games or whatever.
Live Free or Die Hard was only PG-13 because when McClane said "Yippe-ki-yay mother*****er" the mother*****er was muted by the gunshot.
see? What'd I tell you? Games have violence! Now die, for I am Jack Thompson! And I have a P in my last name, even though it's not pronounced! BLARGH!
look , it's a shame manhunt 2 was banned and that videogames are treated as demons that need to be exorcised but PLEASE stop involving things like films and other media in this. You're not going to get those wortheless narrow minded bums to change their mind. You're only going to get worse ratings/situations for movies and stuff instead of better ratings/situations for games.
If you say "look movies are much worse " those retards are only going to see that as an invitation to pounce on films as well.
If any parents read this... Wouldn't you rather you kid to be getting their "high" off video games, violent or not. Than to be out smoking pot and committing crimes with their friends? Just something to think about.
it all falls under parental responsability short and sweet
Omfg, It's about time, when the hell is the *****ing media just going to stop messing with games, LEAVE THEM ALONE
If we want to play them we'll play them, but I think the little 6 year old kids shouldn't
I mean, 12-14 is old enough to determine whether its Reality or Virtual Reality
but six? god damn thats when you know the parents an ass
Good thing that I do not have kids because see ? Violence is everywhere and I do not want to worry too much about kids, you know. So no kids for me at all. I love kids but can't have them because of violence, sex, murdering, and hate. Crazy. Can't wait in the name of God bring wick system to the end soon. I am getting sick of this world.
EXACTLY, who knows? It's a random guess and quite frankly a shot at a whole race of people.
WTF? This better not turn out like Terminator 3, taking the violence and grit out of these films just so they can get a wider audience is bullsh*t.
like it or not thats how life is now a days i have a small child 2 years old , and like i said in my last post it falls under parental responsability, you wouldent let your 1yo play with legos, of course not its a chocking hazzerd so why should it be any diffrent with video games, granit i do belive that the esrb is a lil harsh at times with video games , like manhunt 2 but itsa game made by adults for adults plain and simple , its no diffrent from going to a theater and letting your child watch someone get there head cut off , or let them watch a sexual act on tv , or at a theater , it all falls under parental responsabilty....thats the end of my soap box
I agree, short and sweet.
I was playing games like Mortal Kombat when I wasn't yet in grade school. My parents went that extra mile to make sure I could handle such content, which I think other parents should also do with their children.
But that's just me...
They shouldn't lax up on game ratings, they should crack down on movie violence. A Die Hard movie got rated PG-13? Have movie rating standards dropped so far since the 80's (Die Hard 1)?? So SAW 3 will be PG-13 in 20 years?? sheesh...
As for the violence in young boys: It's NATURAL! Every civilization goes through it. Remember your dad or grandpa talking about playing 'Cowboys and Indians' or sword fighting with sticks? Video games are just a modern medium. However, that's not an excuse to give Junior a copy of Manhunt 2; that's just *****ty parenting.
All in all, I believe in the ESRB. It's movie ratings for games, there's nothing wrong with letting people know what to expect in a game. It's the stupid parents and lawyers like Jack Thompson who think outright BANNING everything will make little Tommy and Suzy safe that piss me off.
Welcome to the U.S.S.A., comrade...
Ok, it's hormonal, for a start - 12-14 is a the crossing into adolescence, all of those children probably like violence, they're at the age where swearing at people, hitting them, shooting people, drugs, etc are likely to start. And if they do start there they don't stop.
And it's not games. Games are a way of stress relieving, and shooting a bunch of pixels in a game isn't gonna make you kill someone unless there's already something wrong. Blaming games and media is just a way out of saying that parents can be bad parents, or avoiding things like insanity as an excuse. What about murders in the past - they didn't have GTA back then. Who shot Kennedy? I suppose that was pong that caused the person to do that, then?
Blaming games for bad parenting or any other such problem is just an easy way out. I, and everyone I know, played games like that when we were that age, but I don't know anyone that's killed anyone.
we all played violent video games when we were younger ive nvr killed anyone nore robed a stor nor hurt anyone , if you wanna look at the ppl who do these things it would be best to look at there childhood and there famely sturcture/sittuation
DAMN RIGHT! The same excuses go for me also.
people, videos games are just for fun, its like lets say a 12 year old plays gta so what? it wont do anything.i wont kill anybody and im 13 and i own gta so what!!
It's bout time parents stopped b!tching and controlled what their kids do more, agreed.
I'm 22
I work at my local comunity college as a teaching assistant for video game design classes.
I also work at a local toys r us

Cut the crap pansey man.
www.google.com
yay porn.
Why are we trying to keep kids inocent until they are 21? wtf.
That just made me laugh.... jack thompson
I am 14 and I like violence because i like to pretend i'm killing people :P.
People like you.
People like Jack Thompson.
I WANT TO KIIIIIIIILLLLLL LLLLLLLL!
RAWR.
Enough of the insanity.
violent games are fun.
thats just proven fact. everyone wants to play the violent games because you can do more. If you were playing an E rated game, you couldn't do nearly as much to people as you can in an AO rated game. Thats what makes it more fun. Also, the higher the rating, the more realistic.
I loved that part of the movie :) Awesome
That is definately my favorite.
I like the whole hacking related parts of it.
yes but some children your age have problems deferenchiating between what is real and whats not ,maybe its the parents fault who knows but the fact is just that not all children are the same so what mayb e right for one is not right for the next
if parents r so worried why dont they stop buying the game systems for their kids so they cant get the games and these stupid people like jack thompson should go ***** themselves blaming every wrong in the world on video games shame shame
Honestly, kids of all ages, and people of all ages sometimes have problems with figuring out what is real and what is not.
But KILLING people with shotguns, rocket launchers, etc.. C'mon, were YOU really that stupid when you were a kid??
Most likely not, and the same stands for sane children today, enough with the 'it's too hard to tell the difference between games and reality' bullcrap, it's just the easy way out!!
No Dur...
8==============D
wen i was a kid i lied cheat steal! cuz i saw it on video games...still havent killed any1 yet
I play video games so i can shoot people in the virtual world and not the real world, because i can let my anger out on a random citizin of san andreas rather than my hometown.
the more violent the game the more free and realistic it is, besides when I play a game I get to kill people IN the game NOT IN REAL LIFE
couldn't have said it better myself
they need more DISAPWIN
this society is decadent, just like Rome before it collapsed, I'm afraid we're on the way out... and we are gonna get a new war... World Wide Terrorist War how can you fight that!? anywayz FPS FTW no I'm not insane
I'm 12 and would play GHII over GTA any day. I do play violent games, but more for fun rather than violence. Like, I love Killzone's multiplayer. Not because it's violent, but because it's a fun game to play with my friends\cousins \whatever.
"yes but some children your age have problems deferenchiating between what is real and whats not"
It doesn't take a genius to know the difference between button bashing and shoving a knife down someone's throat.
At that, I'll quote...
"It all falls under parental responsability, short and sweet."
Indeed.
yea ok. we're talking about games and violence so keep your god bull***** out of this. know one thing. violence is a part of life. also understand that alot of violence has been caused by religion. so its not like god is going to come down and save us all from the violence. you know why? because its just how people are. adapt to it or die mfer.
Meh, its different over here.
Mature+ 16
Anyway, It is the parents fault, Killzone 2 has been banned, What next?
Counterstrike: Source?
NO CSS + :(
I've always wondered why no one picks up on the fact that you can't play GTA with dying a couple dozen times. Sure, I've cheated and gone on rampages, and each time I do, I end up dead, almost always at the hands of the cops (or military). That's really not "rewarding" violence, as people seem to believe.
I suck!! Shoot me someone!!
I agree with absolutely everything that you said.
GTFO, n00b. The fact is, violent games are NOT harmful to children, infact they can be good stress releivers. Oh yeah, and just another thing, any moron can easily tell the difference between mashing buttons and smacking someone around with the butt of a shotgun.
