CEA Considers Bridging Gap Left by E3 |
Ó
CEA to the rescue?
Yeah, we here at QJ are still pretty bummed with the news about the changes in E3, but it looks like the Consumer Electronics Association is planning to be our shoulder to cry on as they are seriously considering the viability of a new consumer and trade event for the games industry.
After that ESA decision to morph E3 to into the E3 Media Festival, CEA believes there's a gap in the industry calendar which they are planning to fill with a freshly designed event based on feedback from the electronic entertainment industry.
CEA president and CEO, Gary Shapiro said that "since ESA decided to eliminate the E3 event in its known format, we have been deluged with inquiries on whether we could fill the tradeshow needs of smaller video entertainment companies. Our executive board met yesterday and unanimously asked staff to explore ways that we can help the gaming community."
The possibility of an E3-like extravaganza from CEA will be decided by the advisory committee led by CEA executives Karen Chupka and Dan Cole with support from companies including Auravision, Majesco Entertainment and NCsoft. For now, things are looking optimistic, according to Ms. Chupka, "a major goal of this advisory committee is to generate gaming community feedback on how best to meet the needs of the industry...As long as there is desire and commitment, we are ready to service this community and will begin looking at venues in Las Vegas and Los Angeles and for appropriate partners."
So what's your take in all these? Do you think the planned CEA event could fill the large gap left behind by E3? What do you want to see in the CEA event? Tell it to us through your comments.

THAT HELLA SUCKS!!!!!!!! damn you sony!
Oh well, maybe this will be open like the TGS...
It was the big publishers and hardware manufacturers that told E3 they weren't going to pay for massive stands, booth babes, freebies and making special demos for E3 anymore because they don't see a return on the costs. So why will they suddenly jump at the idea of doing that with a different trade show? This won't go anywhere and if it does, it's a sign of how stupid some of the people running this industry are.
Sounds great! I miss E3 but would like to see something more viable. It would be cool if they made it open to the general public - like you register in advance like E3, but dont need to be part of the press or any crap like that. An admission fee would be handy too.
Notice the quote in the article says "smaller video entertainment companies". I highly doubt you'd see the major players at this as it seems more lie an outlet for the little guys.
yo.
from #2 "THAT HELLA SUCKS!!!!!!!! damn you sony!" I really hope that was a joke comment. Anyways, if they do make one, it's not going to be anything like E3. They changed E3 from its flashy former self for a reason. If they make a new show it probably wont be close to the old E3 or else they nuked E3 for nothing.
Yeah, while the public and press are bummed out by the loss of E3, the games developers and publishers are pretty pleased to not have to spend anymore time and money on that marketing wankfest. I doubt they'll jump at the chance to go elsewhere, no matter how much the public and press want it.
Okay heres a thought MAKE THE PUBIC PAY, for entry and that would ensure the dev's get some dosh for the turn out............................................oh and BOOTH BABES
darn you greedy devs.... taking away the legendary E3... Probably cuz of those greedy people at EA....
DUDE i think i can see games back at CES again that would be *****ingtacular and at 11 i don't want my "pubic" to pay!!!
