Imagine using your PSP as a controller for a toy car. Cool, huh? Now, check out that image plastered below. Hey, what do you know! It's a PSP that looks to be controlling a toy car, just like you imagined! Yes, and that picture is actually a Sony patent application. Oh, the possibilities!

PSP Car patent - Image 1

According to Siliconera, this patent was filed by SCEE, and apparently has the intention of operating a remote car with a camera. Further details reveal that the car will be controlled via Wi-Fi. As the patent would describe it, "a user may control the car so as to spy on their friends.. then upload the stored video images to a website."

Not only that, the car can also be used in "augmented reality zones" for racing. Basically what this idea should translate to would be a virtual build-your-own race track game. Sounds promising, right?

As it is only a patent, however, it's just as good as a piece of paper on a drawing board. Hopefully we'll hear something official from Sony on this matter soon. In the meantime, do wipe your drool, okay?

» Sony stealing another idea from the Homebrew community

I remember there was some old homebrew that allowed the PSP1000 to control those RC helicopters because they are controlled by infrared. This looks pretty cool though, I wonder what it's range would be.

» old..

in the pic, that psp is psp1000 obviously

» no

nope its the psp 2000/3000

cant you see the little speakers(the place where the sound comes from) you cant see them in the 1000 as it is below the psp

» No

it is a 1000 in the picture. 2000/3000 versions have there speaker holes just above, next to the screen. 1000's have set below the screen. you can clearly see it in the picture.

actually ur wrong if you zoom in you will see the speakers on the bottom and those hole things at the top (idk wat they are since i have a PSP 2000)

» It IS

a 1000 series on the 2/3000 they're speaker holes above the D-Pad and face buttons that are right next to the screen. In the picture above, they're below and right next to the screen. Argument over.

being that its wifi, the PSPs range is usually about 30 feet with adhoc. I'd get a little further since I have an antenna mod on my PSP 2000

If that were the case, then it wouldn't have just been filed. Also, being that it is controlled via wifi, rather than infrared, its still relevant to the current versions of the PSP. I doubt the range would be very good though... which would mean that it would probably be those little mini RCs so people wouldn't complain... its actually the only thing I always hated about those mini RCs.

» You are right and wrong

its a psp 1000 but they are fake speakers beside the screen and the real ones are on the side TRUST me i know so you all fail

» psp 1000

the holes at the bottom of the screen aren't speakers, but they're used for some case-type accessories, i think i remember seeing.

» come on guys

why are you bickering over somethnig like this? its really irrelevant to the topic. both have wi-fi, therefor psp model is not specific. also, you can easily tell that they didnt make it perfect, its just a patent, making this too specific could really screw things up.

More contrary to the topic, to expand the 30 or something feet radius of the wifi, they would probably give you a clip on attenna on the top of the psp, no sure if this is possible, but im sure it is, which would send a much longer signal to the psp.

Doubt that they will be microcars though, they state that it will be able to "spy on friends" a microcar would not be able to nearly look that high up, and would have not be able to move anywhere on pavement, etc.

The augmented track is really interesting, not sure how it will set the boundries, but if they figured out how to do that, then you could simply be racing in your kitchen, but on the psp, thye could be anywhere, a desert, a racetrack, etc

» weird

i'll tell you what kind of PSP is in the picture: a hand-drawn PSP. There, I win. :)

Honestly though, I am in the process of rebuilding an awesome old Lego space vehicle (the mega core magnetizer) it has 6 huge wheels and i was thinking of putting a motor in it (like IR maybe) and control with the PSP, but of course, that is far off still...

I just think its funny this patent surfaced just recently as I was thinking of the same kind of thing...

by PaganiC12 - 2009-04-11 17:31
» hm...

no matter the psp in the photo is PSP1000/2000/3000 , it'll be an interesting idea if sony gonna actually make it real !

well...good idea anyways

» Pizza...

I can see it now... I order pizza, and about 30 minutes later, I get a call, telling me to go outside, take the pizza's from the front seat only, and leave them the money.

» BULL*****

FAIL

it was made by a drawing program.

I WIN

» Ahh....

The James Bond car arrives.

Seriously though. This isn't new. Honda has already done a method like this with one of their show cars. They controlled everything from turning signals to doors(?). I'm not sure if they were actually able to drive it too though. The news about it was posted here a long while back around when 1.5 was the hype.

Then comes the robot that's controlled by wifi...again. PSPRobot, I believe?

For the PS2 there was this GT controller with an RC car. You use the PS2 controller to control your mini RC car while you drive on the PS2.

It's an interesting concept for a psp though.

By the way, that picture is a model of a PSP-1000. Don't disagree with me. There are actually four holes for the speakers. The speakers on the 1000 were facing down towards the bottom holes (not on the faceplate but below it) hence why the slim's speakers are much louder. It's the same speakers but just a different position. Either way, the picture is just a sketch so accuracy isn't necessary when the general idea can be presented.
