Black Box moving in with EA Canada, Criterion to handle next NFS game?

Need For Speed - Image 1

Here's a small tinge of hope for those who wanted a better Need For Speed title instead of no new NFS game at all.

An Electronic Arts spokesman recently said that Black Box, the group behind EA's long-lived Need For Speed franchise, is not closing down. Rather, the studio is being relocated to Burnaby's EA Canada in June 2009:

This does not mean that the Black Box studio is closing. The studio is moving to our Burnaby campus to share the facility with EAC and other EA teams that operate out of our state-of-the-art facility. We will operate two distinct studios, each with their own distinct culture and teams, out of our Burnaby facility.

As for the Need For Speed franchise's cancellation, the rep said that the company has so far "no announcements regarding franchises". Well no duh, rep man.

Another interesting thing is that UK-based Criterion Games has been rumored to be helping with the next Need For Speed game. You probably know Criterion as the makers of a little racing series called Burnout.

Of course, this info comes from "a purported EA employ who wishes to remain anonymous", so better take it with a pinch of salt (hence the "Rumor" category this post is under). Still, EA actually owns Criterion, so it's possible. We'll keep you updated, but in the meantime, what are your thoughts on a Criterion-developed Need For Speed game? Sound off in the comments section.

» omg

do i feel a good nfs game coming in the future?

by Stario001 - 2008-12-20 18:55
» .

Maybe this is the next step of evolution for the Need for Speed series. : )

I hope its a giant leap forward for NFS and Burnout games, think about customizing cars in Burnout and better driving and crashing in NFS.

» who cares?

i'd rather play Wangan midnight, initial d, and gran turismo than this p.o.s. game.

» Agreed with the first 2 comments.

I too feel that the NFS series has gone downhill, and although slapping Burnout into it may not exactly be the worlds greatest idea, but if it happens as a fan of Burnout i will be keeping an eye on it if this turns out to be true. May not be the direction NFS really needs but it could be a direction that redeems itself from Carbon and Pro Street.

» Everyone knows this is a marketing campaign

Just like EA's break apart our teams to push a longer development time. This is just their second game that the other team was releasing, guaranteed.

EA just pushes the cancellation of the NFS series as a bull***** marketing campaign to make people want to jump onto the series as soon as they say. "Hey. We were just joking. Make sure you get our new game that's developed by another team, or so we want you to think it's developed by another team when we're just trying to sell more copies because we make *****ty games. EA."

» If

If Criterion is helping to make the next game, then I have no worries. They are one of my favorite dev teams. But I still think that they would have to pull of something to make the series great. I got 1 thing from reading this; if they really are helping, then there is going to be an INSANELY intricate damage system to the car. Which I would love any day.

» man.

Criterion doesn't even know how to make a crappy game, so if this is true, 'm not worried at all.

» You sir...

Are an ignorant Prick. Need for speed used to be the best racing game around. nothing could even compare. Yes now it sucks, but if they want to bring it back to the glory days then isn't that a good thing? im just thinking with criterion making it it will end up feeling like burnout, and not need for speed.

by GW2 - 2008-12-21 04:13
» But.

Do they know how to make a good need for speed game? i just hope it doesnt end up feeling too much like burnout. because then it will be pointless to buy seeing as we'd have already bought burnout.

» Meh...

Think of it as "Burnout with customization, licensed cars and cops"

by Metal Jody - 2008-12-21 06:48
» heh

i think EA, Criterion, Bugbear Entertainment, and Rockstar should come together and make the most awesomest racing game ever, filled with cops, destructive environments, detailed car damage, amazing graphics,...

and give it the title, "Need for Awesomeness"

by NarooN - 2008-12-21 07:30
» wow guys.

Stop being so shallow-minded. Just because they made Burnout doesn't mean every racing game they ever develop will be JUST LIKE BURNOUT.

For example, they made the kickass FPS Black. That was an FPS which raped all ass, and was awesome. Didn't even have any driving elements.

If they can make a good FPS, what makes you think they can't make a non-Burnout racing game?

GTFO.

» Uhhh....

@Darkshneider:

If you read the article, it says "UK-based Criterion Games has been rumored to be helping with the next Need For Speed game".

That means Criterion Games is HELPING with the NFS game, and not making a new Burnout game that has NFS features.

» Or

you could get off that dime bag you been smoking too much.

by roddollente - 2008-12-21 18:34
» huh?

last time i checked, Japanese racing games always do it right the first time (and everytime). even mario kart was more fun playing that the last 3 nfs games. who's the ignorant prick now?
