Halo 3 - Image 1

I suppose no one's going to be all that shocked that the best selling games over the last 12 months are mostly sequels.

You know what you're getting into when buying a sequel to a good game and there are usually quite a few significant improvements in the new version. Compare that to the risk you undertake on an unknown original title and the choice should be obvious.

Still... seven out of the top eight games is a little bit surprising.

Here are the top selling games over the last 12 months. Note that these are approximate values based on data from various sources:
  1. Call of Duty 4 for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC
    • 10 million copies sold
    • Released November 6, 2007
  2. Halo 3 for the Xbox 360
    • 8 million copies sold
    • Released September 25, 2007
  3. Grand Theft Auto 4 for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and PC
    • 6.5 million copies sold
    • Released April 29, 2008
  4. Mario Kart Wii for the Wii
    • 6.5 million copies sold
    • Released April 10, 2008
  5. Super Mario Galaxy for the Wii
    • 6 million copies sold
    • Released November 1, 2007
  6. Super Smash Bros. Brawl for the Wii
    • 5 million copies sold
    • Released January 31, 2008
  7. Wii Fit for the Wii
    • 5 million copies sold
    • Release December 1, 2007 (in Japan, later elsewhere)
  8. Metal Gear Solid 4 for the PlayStation 3
    • 3 million copies sold
    • Released June 12, 2008
It would be easy for you to speculate that we're going to be seeing much the same come 2009 with games like Final Fantasy XIII gearing up to make an appearance, and you'd be right for the most part.

I can respect originality as much as the next gamer. In fact, it ranks highly on my list of values when I rate a game. The problem is that unknown and untested games are often priced as much as games like Halo 3. I feel Halo  earned my respect enough to deserve my repeated, almost unquestioned patronage over the course of its many titles.

I realize the difficulty for original IP publishers to sell at reduced rates but from a consumer's point of view, how can they expect us to take on the burden of the risk without any incentive?

» Hmm..

So Cod4 took down Halo 3.

Lets all take a moment of silence to enjoy this rare occasion."

» um

why is mario galaxy a sequel?

if mario galaxy is a sequel to any other mario game, then wii fit is a sequel to wii sports and wii play...

» better is subjective...

to me COD4 feels like every fps i've ever played on a console... aside from halo.

i don't like the leveling element of COD4...

COD4 didn't have replays...

COD4 to me was a serious FPS, Halo3 (as halo has always been) was a fun FPS.

i don't think either was better than the other, they just fill different roles in the FPS universe.

besides... COD4 was not an exclusive, and it only sold 25% more than Halo 3... hardly a clear cut victory IF you want to compare the two.

You've got a point with Wii Play being something of the Wii sport successor. I'd say it's Wii sport's spiritual successor. However as a true sequel? Not really. At least, they're not marketing it as such.

As for Mario, if the long line of Mario titles didn't do it for you, it's, more directly, a sequel to Mario 64. Same mechanics, same gameplay, same style. (even the same story. sigh)

» @ So Cod4 took down Halo 3.

So a game on 3 systems (PS3, X360, PC) outsold a game on 1 system (X360) by only 2 million copies.

Yeah, that's a true victory alright.

Personally, I sold my copy of CoD4 a few days ago and am still playing Halo 3.

» hmm

i wasn't aware it was tied that closely to mario64...

i retract my questioning it's sequel status :)

i never owned an n64 as it was the worst console of that generation...

» ....

n64 worst console of its generation!!!!! what about Golden eye 64, Perfect Dark, super smash bros, Mario Kart!!!! classics!!!!

by rollypoly - 2008-12-01 23:28
» oh yeah...

i didn't say that it was worthless...

the playstation and the saturn outclassed the n64 at almost every turn. game library, graphics, controls, media capacity. the only thing the n64 had that they didn't was faster load times inherent in cartidge based systems.

every system has it's share of good exclusives. they may justify the purchase, but it doesn't mean the system was real competition for sony or sega...

» N64 sucked big time

I used to be a big Nintendo Fan (Gameboy, NES, SuperNintendo). As an example: I had three different versions of the SuperNintendo (SuperFamicom, SuperNES, SuperNintendo).

I was one of the first to get a N64. The console was one of the reason why I stopped playing videogame. Most games sucked big time. O.k. GoldenEye and Mario64 were brilliant, but else? Not much. You had to wait months till one game came out and they were mostly not very good. It was total horror!

I never played videogames again till one night when I was at a friend and he showed me... FinalFantasyVII and ResidentEvil2 on the PS. Those games blew me away.

Had a lot of fun playing FinalFantasyVII on my CustomPSP. SquareEnix is absolutely crazy, that they don't make a port on PSP or a remake for PS3!

Okay has nothing to do with the article, but had to say it: N64 was bad,

» Good point.

Yea, I have my Halo 3. CoD 4 has passed it's value.
