Rockstar Games' Manhunt 2 is rejected once again by the BBFC - Image 1When the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC) rejected the revisions made to Manhunt 2 (PS2, PSP, Wii) earlier this week, Rockstar Games gave a statement. Rockstar had called the BBFC's decision unacceptable.

Now, authorities from the BBFC are defending their decision on banning the game, and said that the required changes they sanctioned against Rockstar "had not gone far enough." They said that the new version was still identical to the one that originally granted the game a Mature rating by the ESRB last August.

Because of this, European gamers won't be seeing this gory game reach their shores this October. In defense to their verdict, Rockstar claimed that the BBFC treat adult DVD releases as well as horror films more favorably than violent video games.

The games publishing company stated that the "freedom" enjoyed by the DVD media far exceeded that of the video games genre. BBFC spokesperson Sue Clark, however, countered this by saying:

If we were more tough on games than any other medium, don't you think we'd be banning far more titles? Manhunt 2 is the second game we have rejected in 23 years. I'd hardly call that draconian.

DVD companies don't complain when we reject their products. The creator of the Struggle In Bondage didn't get up in arms. Manhunt 2 went beyond our guidelines when it came to gross violence and we had a public duty to reject it.

Rockstar is still hoping to gain the favor of the Video Appeals Committee, which is scheduled to hear the company's plea later this year.

THe

BBFC sounds pretty reasonable in their response. 2 games in 23 years, I mean, what was the other game? Postal?

idiots defending censorship

23 years ago it was nearly impossible to produce graphics good enough for any kind of realistic violence. The early controversial games like Mortal Kombat and Night Trap (which came out in 1993) were a joke compared to R rated movies. How would they ban a game for violence in 1984 anyway? Let's see we got Super Mario Brothers, it promotes drug use. Eat a halucagenic mushroom and get super powers! It also promotes animal abuse by stomping on turtles! Ban this offensive game! Struggle in Bondage? That sounds like it's pretty graphic both sexually and violent and much worse than Manhunt 2. No wonder they didn't say much when it was banned. This really is BS, it goes way beyond trying to prevent kids or even teens from playing violent games and is complete censorship and denial of free speech and expression. Parents can't decide what their kids are allowed to play, and neither are mature adults aparently.

Censorship eh?

I suppose, but lets put things into perspective. It's a game about the variety of ways in which to brutually kill someone. Even the creators thought it crossed the line.

Why the rest of Europe will be suffering because the the UK?

If BBFC rejects Manhunt 2, then why the countries that use PEGI certification cannot get the game? PEGI gave it 18 rating, but 18 rated games have been released no problem in Scandinavia and in nordic countries.

Ugh

@Farnesworth " I suppose, but lets put things into perspective. It's a game about the variety of ways in which to brutually kill someone. Even the creators thought it crossed the line." I have seen infinitely worse in movies these days. What about the rape-torture-porn movies that are popular lately? Hostel 2 and other such movies have not been banned. Also, these games are intended for adults. What right does any have to tell me what I can and cannot do, as long as it doesn't break any laws. Last I checked, playing games isn't illegal and a large majority of gamers are able to differentiate between what's real and what's not. Despite how realistic video games are becoming, it's easier to tell the difference in a game than in a movie.

honest opinion

games like this make me sick. and movies too. they have no rightful place in this world, and they really make me lose faith in humanity. no one should be enjoying this kind of crap.

off topic

I used to think goombas were dogs... I don't know why, but I was only 7 back then. Anyhow, I like the hallucinogenic reference... interestingly enough, red mushrooms with white spots are among the most poisonous mushrooms around last I heard. Back when I was young, I happened to stumble upon one, and thinking, "Hey, Mario eats these! I wonder how they taste!", I almost plucked one and ate it. However, an adult nearby yelled at me, and told they're poisonous. I vehemently denied their toxicity, but just to be safe, I didn't eat it. Lucky me :D Also, why is everyone complaining?! If you want the game so badly, just download it off the torrents!!! Sheesh.

um READ now

You have no place in this world. People like violence and that has been established for thousands of years. The romans through Christians in the Colosseum to be eaten by lions and everybody cheered. Now we are playing a VIDEO GAME which the people on screen do not exist, i kill countless number of people and it fills my human nature violent meter!. I don't care who you are but putting a bullet in someones head online is the most satisfying aspect of ANY game. Im not violent and i play all types of games ranging from kiddy games such as Wii sports Mario to Gran turismo HD MGS4 and to Ultra Violent games like something like Manhunt 2 and you know what? I'm normal. I get great grades have a good girl friend so don't loose faith in HUMANITY. Loose faith with yourself for not moving with time and being locked in your little non violent world.

er...

The BBFC is the British Board of Film Classification...

Second!

I second that. If you don't like violent video games then no one is forcing you ro buy them or play them or take any part in them. I want my freedom to choose what I want to or not want to play.

To put it short

I wish Rockstar the best of luck on this hellish path of appeals they are being forced to walk. There is no reason for all of this, the point of a rating system is to tell people that games MAY be to violent for them, not to reject the public from being able to play them at all! "Manhunt 2 went beyond our guidelines when it came to gross violence and we had a public duty to reject it." How on earth is this your "public duty"!? Rejecting a game's right to be violent is like rejecting a poet's poem to rhyme.
