Australia to block online access to games with content beyond MA-15 |
Ó
Pretty soon Australian gamers won't be able to access anymore those websites that host and sell games which the government deems to contain content "edgier" than what is allowed under an MA-15+ rating. Doesn't matter if you're above 18 not, if it's blocked, you're not getting to it.Stephen Conroy, spokesman for Communications Minister, explained to the Sydney Morning Herald:
This is confirmation that the scope of the mandatory censorship scheme will keep on creeping. Far from being the ultimate weapon against child abuse, it now will officially censor content deemed too controversial for a 15-year-old. In a free country like ours, do we really need the government to step in and save us from racy web games?
He further explained that this scheme will be applied to downloadable games, Flash games, and websites that are in the business of selling boxed copies of MA-15+ games thru mail order.
That [online games] exemption [on content ratings] is the only reason why multi-player games with user-generated environments are possible in this country; without it, it'd only take one game user anywhere in the world to produce objectionable content in the game environment to make the Australian Government ban the game for everyone.
Uh-oh?

The web content filtering being suggested for Australia is meeting a decent amount of resistance. The political parties I have talked to are aware of the high profile it has. One of the arguments against it is that it is easy to circumvent. I reckon that if they do start banning access to gaming related sites, a large proportion of net users will make this circumvention standard practice. Personally this is one of the first times I have started considering signing up to a paid net proxy service.

Similar laws have been suggested by the german government.
There's much resistance against it.

However somewhere established like the middle east, some areas of Europe are much more conservative since they're an older society with historical bits to "conserve".
Aka, don't say silly things.

Whoa - can't be, or they would have to even block shops like Amazon (US) etc., since there are a lot of big stores selling adult games through mail order.
Sound like an amazingly stupid law, completely impossible to enforce without heavily damaging e-commerce and making Australia look like a land of dolts. I sure hope for the aussies that they will stop this idiocy from happening.

A LOT of games are rated E and and are much more fun then a game based around blood and gore.

@ iamshadow
The point is their government is walking where they have no buisness going. If your parents cant discipline you (and i mean that strongly) then sadly your government will feel as though they need to. SO! This means EVERYBODY looses. Read the article, it looks like everyone will loose if their government succeeds. and FYI (E) Rated games are the shytt EX: Sonic, Monkeyball, LBP, etc, But there is more than just collecting coins and crap, I need my HALO, Killzone 2, Fallout, and Resistance. Think outside the box and thats when (M) Rated games will come in. I dont need some idiot to tell me "hey man (E) Rated games can be fun" Dude STFU anyone could have just said that for no reason, so pay attention next time.
You two are a bunch of posers, followers, pu$$ies, @ joebo19x @ iamshadow, i bet you two always do what youre told or go with any crowd. You two both fail with misreble lives and sadly do not know it. But me? me and all the other gamers or people who want freedom will continue to think outside the box and create new things whether they evolve from rated (E) to (M) or not.
Im a grown ass man, what the f/k i look like playing some childrens game for entertainment or streaming some Disney movie.
im just being real, is that too real for you, go cry to you government Bichiz!

So the law practically doesn't do anything at all.
On the other hand, the article says games with "content deemed too controversial for a 15-year-old". This doesn't actually make sense, as there's no M-14 rating, but it could suggest MA15 and M15 games will be banned, which means games like GTA IV and CoD4.
So...the article doesn't make sense. Great.
They'd better not ban M15 games, that'd just be ridiculous. Why do we have to be the country banning violent games? I mean, *****, we don't ban books and movies. At least movies realistically portray it.

What? The government effectively banned rifle ownership without "proof of need"? So, let me get this straight, Australians couldn't, should they need to, rise up and kill their leaders in a massive and liberating revolution should the need arise?
Oh. Well, in the greater sense of things, video game censorship is really a drop in the bucket.
Allow the government to run your lives, and they will RUN your lives.

"But but it would help in an emergency!"
Yeah, just like the emergency in Iran and their crackdown on cybertraffic to get the news out.

Its good to be strict about it.
But to ban games? maybe thats abit harsh.
China is a country too big. Imagine if all the kids were given access to games like GTA. Imagine the influence it will give towards a child. The same goes to australia i guess. The amount of racial discrimination and violence there is quite bad you know.

But back on topic, I agree with most (all?) people here... the Labor Government's plans to filter the internet, and in turn block the download of games above MA15+, is just pathetic.. As other people have stated, the majority of Australians don%u2019t agree with these plans at all... but I feel as if there will only be a strong reaction to it once it is implemented. The previous government, the Howard (Liberal) Government, gave away free Internet filtering programs (which a letter was sent about to every family), however not to their surprise not even 30,000 downloads of the software occurred...This, when contrasted to Australia's population of 20 million+, is strong evidence that the Australian people don%u2019t want their access to information, including games, restricted where unnecessary (as in, where parents should be taking responsibility for what their children access themselves%u2026instead of allowing the Government to do it for them%u2026)

I'm sorry. You've lost all credibility in this argument and should reevaluate your positions. It is not up to YOU or the GOVERNMENT to decide who has a need for a gun. Self-protection and gun ownership by extension are rights granted upon all men (and women) by God (I use this term loosely as I am an atheist).
You've already shown yourself incapable of even considering that the governor general sits idly by why your rights are usurped by the ruling body.
The PEOPLE, not the governor general, should have the power to change the government. Again, it's too late. Australia is a prison state and its citizens subjects without fundamental rights.

People and their rediculous own ideas of moral standings and trying to govern how we spend our own coin.
My ISP already "tries" to reduce online content... If this works i'm moving f'n country, but I reckon it will fail as all online censorship fails.
20 aussie cents worth.

Tis bad tho, no denying stupid facts. Makes me want to hit myself over the head with a stupid hammer, since i know my tax money will be spent to further this "mandatory censorship scheme".

Although you %u201Cuse the term loosely%u201D, I am baffled as to why you would say that God permits gun ownership when you are an Atheist :S If you are an Atheist, you really shouldn%u2019t be using the words of a God to justify the way you choose to live your life, or the attitudes/views you choose to have%u2026 With that said, that is where you seem to lose credibility lol%u2026 But even so, I will respond as best I can%u2026 (I am atheist too btw) In Australia, it is against the constitution for religion to play any part in Government activities whatsoever, so in effect laws are made without bias towards any major religion in our country. So, citizens cannot simply say they are allowed to bear arms because their religion allows it%u2026 I%u2019m not sure if you are aware of how bad the situation was before the stricter gun laws were implemented, but if you did you would realise that they were required before things got out of hand (for example, farmers arming themselves with guns one would think should only be used by specially trained armed forces..) In fact, the Prime Minster of the time, John Howard, thought it was so serious that he got up on a stage in front of hundreds, if not thousands of these farmers and other citizens to argue his case%u2026and not to his surprise he was met with an extremely angry response from the crowd%u2026but nevertheless he faced them head on. As you know, the laws were passed, and in turn Australia was made safer for all citizens. Shootings are much, much rarer in Australia compared to countries such as America where gun ownership laws are loose. In fact, any shooting is widely reported in the news and strongly condemned by the public. BUT, I think you think Australia%u2019s gun laws are much stricter than they actually are%u2026 Australia competes in Shooting in the Olympics and as such, there is a significant amount of people who possess guns for sporting purposes (shooting targets), but rather than simply buying a gun out of WalMart, they have to go through a number of checks to make certain they are able to use a gun in a responsible manner.
And the Australian people DO have the power to change the government%u2026essentiall y every four years in Federal and State elections. I%u2019m not sure exactly how American politics operate, but one political party in Australia simply cannot dictate and abuse the Australian people if they have the majority%u2026 if the Governor General hasn%u2019t done so, the people and other political parties can call for early elections and thus reorganize government in a manner favourable to the people. And if Federal government is doing something wrong, State governments can counter it%u2026and if State Governments are in the wrong, Federal Government can counter them%u2026 Without going into too much detail, basically there is no need for citizens to barge into parliament with guns in order to change things, there are plenty of legal means to do so that can%u2019t be hindered by the political group the people are rallying against %u2013 the people are protected by the Constitution in this and all other manners, which cannot be altered without a nationwide vote on the issue. And in regards to the Governor General, like I said previously, he/she answers to not only themselves but also the Queen of England %u2013 If the Queen, and thus the government of England, determines Australia%u2019s government is in disarray and not working in favour of the people, then they have the power to dissolve it and establish a new one. In conclusion, it is not JUST the Governor General who have the power to change government, the people have just as much power too%u2026 without the need for guns.
%u201CAustralia is a prison state and its

The Constitution, among other things, ensures citizens possess fundamental rights such as freedom of speech and religion, and thus a %u201Cprison state%u201D cannot be established in Australia %u2013 unless for some reason the majority of Australians voted in a referendum for a %u201Cprison state%u201D to be formed%u2026 :S
@somemadcaaant
Thanks for recognizing that yes, I am indeed on the same side of all of you regarding this issue lol%u2026 Let%u2019s just hope not too much of our taxes are wasted before the government realises the huge mistake they are making%u2026

You've gone off on a stupid tangent in defending Australia's constitution when it's utterly pointless.
When someone takes away your fundamental right to defend yourself (as with a gun), you have allowed yourself to have your rights taken away. The constitution DOES NOT GRANT ANYBODY ANY RIGHTS. It is merely a document respecting preexisting rights and a theoretical limit on government.
Again, your credibility on the subject is utterly laughable.

as Second Life and WOW. There are far more internet websites that
promote child abuse than secondlife. Why should people that spend their
recreational dollars on meeting people from all over the world in an
interactive way such as SL. You would be much fairer if there was a
gateway link that needed to be age verified for adults to access second
life. What ever happened to democracy in our Country? When did
politicians stop listening to the little people, especially those with a
disability that use SL as their only social outlet. This Game is not all
about sex, some of us build and run clubs to enjoy music from all over
the world. For some people this is all they have, dont punish the
minority. Think hard why you became a politition and who helped you get
there!
I'm a Graduated helper in Secondlife and I spend time to help newbies
and I don't see any proof of child pornography and anything else really.
Why would Stephen Conroy take away Adult Leisure and left nothing for
us to enjoy. I think he's is morally wrong for pointing secondlife as
Game as it is not a game but it is 3d Virtual 3d Social networking. I
made friends on it and if cut off there no way I can contact them. Also
Facebook is stay and so is Secondlife is stay.
Australia is freedom country and this is not China!!!!
Please stop this happening.
