Apple: PSP and DS just not cool anymore, overpriced too

The claws are out -- and from Apple, wouldn't you know! Phil Schiller, Apple's marketing VP main man, is calling out the PSP and the DS, handheld gadgets from Sony and Nintendo respectively, for being overpriced. And not being cool anymore. Kssshhh...

"When [DS and PSP] came out, they seemed so cool," said Shiller. "But once you play a game on the iPod touch, you think 'hey, these things aren't so cool any more..."

Wearing out that coolness factor isn't the only problem. "We're talking about 25, 30, 40 dollars a title. These kids can't afford those titles. Worse isn't the price, it's the buying experience." As opposed to their games -- all 21,178 of them, not to mention the up and coming hot titles such as Assassin's Creed II from Ubisoft and the music game Riddim Ribbon.

Apple's definitely making it known they're putting themselves in the handhelds race now, flat and square. Well, Sony and Ninty? What say you? With these points raised by Apple, making a comeback with "It's not really in the same league as us, hence it's not a competition" won't suffice, methinks.

Hmmm Ipod touch from 200$ 300$ or 400$

And most of the ipod touch games are like 3erd party crap you just payed 10$-14$ for and play for about 10mins

PSP - Amazing Graphics, Great Controls, and Good Games.

NDS- Great Graphics, Great Controls, and Many Good Games.

iPod Touch - Decent Graphics, Crappy Controls, and Very few good games.

Without buttons the iPod will never be as good as a DS or PSP. I can not personally enjoy any iPod games due to funky controls.

I own an iPhone (3G), PSP, AND a DS. I can assure you, this is all bark no bite from Apple. iPhone/Pod games are horrible, there's no way around that. It's not a gaming platform. It's just not.

I can see it being a cool multimedia device, doing music, internet, and calls better than the PSP/DS, but games? No, I think that's one area Apple should stay away from because they're embarrassing themselves calling out the bigger ACTUAL handheld gaming systems.

There no room for the iPod to be in the competition.

I'm not sure if anyone has noticed yet but the iPod is limited in the amount of games it can hold.

The iPod is limited to however big it is. If its an 8 GB iPod its limited to 8GB of games while the PSP and DS don't have this limit. Lets use the PSP Go! as an example for the PSP and the DSi as an example for the DS.

PSP Go! - 16GB built in, can add more GB/MB though the memory card/stick slot. (Can switch Memory card/sticks so its limitless)

DSi - Supports 2gb SD Cards its possible with future updates to add support to SDHC cards.(Can switch SD cards so its limitless)

iPod - Can come in various sizes but once filled there's no way of adding more memory other than wasting more money to get another iPod.

I really wish people would stop saying the iPod is a gaming device.

The VP of a company that sells their iPhone for $700 Australian has the NERVE to call ANYTHING overpriced? The new PSP Go is going to be the most expensive PSP EVER, and you could get two for the price of an iPhone. I buy Apple hardware for my game studio, simply because we need software built only for OSX. They cost a lot but they're incredibly reliable and absolutely no different from buying a system of equal quality (like a Sony PC).

But that's a mad argument saying the DS and PSP cost too much. I think Apple are taking into account that software is cheaper for the iPod, and that they do other features (not poorly like the PSP's music, photo and internet features). Still doesn't work though since the majority of iPod games suck. It's an evolving market though. Both Nintendo and Sony have altered their roadmap to battle against the iPod, it's not something either should dismiss entirely.

I mean all them years ago did you expect Sony to make a DD version of the PSP? Or Nintendo to have their own App Store?

I have to disagree with you that the PSP is a poor music player. I used my PSP mainly as an MP3 player for a couple years before the iPhone came out. I was very excited when I heard about the iPhone as it meant I didn't need to carry my cell phone and the bulky PSP to play my MP3s on.

Not only is the PSP easier to use, but it also produces better sound quality. The only reason I'm not using it now is that the iPhone is smaller and its my phone and my mp3 player in once device. If the PSP Go had a good cell phone in it, I wouldn't need an iPhone at all.

I really don't get why Apple thinks it is a serious contender in the handheld gaming market... Sure, its a good phone, and MP3 player, but it can't be dedicated to those as well as gaming.

Admitadly the DS is a bit short on the graphics department as well as good games, but it has some good ones none the less, and the PSP, it's deffinaly worth the money when you have custom firmware; and I don;t mean for pirate games, I'm talking about all the great homebrew apps out there!

The ipod touch just isnt a game device.

Dont get me wrong it totally can be a dedicated game device only if it follows these rules

1.) 8 hours of gameplay or more. (i dont want no bichin from steve jobs saying "oh we like to make our idevice/pods thin because of pride" Gad I wish he would wake tha fk up! I mean it doesnt have to be as big as the PSP but the way i see it, the bigger the more software features and hardware features you can store in it)

2.) Give us some better freakin battery life! Personally I want 30 hours of stand alone time. Im sorry but if you have a device that just about satisfies all of your digital needs, that obviously means its in constant use. C'mon its a phone (optional), GPS, EMAIL internet, Bluetooth, Push Notifications, Bright @$$ screen, wifi can be always on, youtube, good quality games!!! I mean seriously lets be real. All that crap uses up a lot of battery life. You seriously cant hate on it. It just about does it all. And dont get me started on the battery sucking features of a jaiolbroken divice for example "winterboard" its themes are in constant use.

3.) Is ad-hoc play so hard to ask. Seriously if its a game device, put some freakin ad-hoc support in the hardware like the DS and PSP!!! Some of us do not own the exclusive iphone with its bluetooth battery suckin multiplayer feature! I do not like to be homeboud to the wifi in order to get a quick game of "blades of fury" with my friend! I mean seriously what sense does that make. Now i think the 2nd gen touch supports a ad-hoc feature but i dont know because my friend has the first gen, and originally the touch or phone wasnt even a false claimed gaming device until the 2.0 update. But thats another story, but i would like to add thanks to its hardware limits that is what stops it from being a dedicated gaming device. If you were there in the beginning you will definitely know what im talking about.

4.)How hard is it to put a simple D-pad and 4 little buttons on it (make the buttons look like that d@mn home button sheesh!). I refuse to buy an external accessory that supports that (who remember that crappy bone accessary??). I do not care if the next idevice is just a tad bit wider. I will still buy it. Everyone will! They did last year for christmas and they sho hel.L will this year!

5.) you know what since they bullsh1tted from the beginning now we might end up having to wait for a brand new idevice.

8.) ok so they actually got online gameplay right unlike the PSP which seriously can do better with online (That new need for speed shift should have been online just like the previous NFS Undercover "even if everyone cheats by using that 100% save data file!!". They need to focus on more multiplayer games. I once read that steve jobs chose not to put that camera or any new hardware in the new 64gig because he wants the prices to be lower so everyone will buy one. Well since he wants people to buy them and he wants it to be a gaming device, Ummm duuuuuuh dont you think we would want to play a few matches with each other??? I mean d@mn steve jobs have you never played any video games before??? Quit being so arrogant and *****y like kanye west!!!

lets step up online and give us mic support! BECAUSE ITS A SOCIAL DEVICE EVERYONE WANTS ONE!!!

7.)ima go on and try to close it here. Yes they can keep the same size of the device or whatever, just as long as they give me 8hours of gameplay and twice as much battery life.

See this is the problem with a lot of people. Apple aren't overpriced, they're good value for money.

How many other 64gb flash MP3 players are there, with an almost desktop replacement web browser, LED display, touchscreen tech, long battery time, wifi, bluetooth? The components inside aren't cheap. All it's missing to be the absolute bleeding edge of technology is having an OLED display and maybe a silver-oxide battery.

The same goes for every piece of their hardware. They use the best brands, the absolute best materials. They're not selling bad quality hardware at high prices.

It'd be like saying the PS3 is overpriced compared to the Xbox. One has a tendency to break, the other is very well made.

HAHA i re-read this article, and forgot they mentioned Assassins Creed. LMAO Yo that game is an insult! I played that, and OMG WHY??? Thats all i have to ask, is WHY? That game suxxxx sooooo bad. Dont get me wrong. Honestly i really tried to get into it. I really did. Do not get me started on that whole control scheme. Just remember everyone BIG NAMES SALE! Nuff said.

Although theses games are not unique, i would like to say i want to see more games like these in the app store, and everytime a new one is released i want it to have more features and smoother framerate! Keep in mind this is all my opinion.

To all those ummm... Geometry wars clones Why dont yall just port it over to the idevice for crying out loud. Or do it like Meteor Blitz did and just copy the whole freakin game and edit it like it was your own, lol like that time they copied "FLOW".

What iam saying is the idevice has great potential, it just needs

Battery life

ad-hoc multiplayer

Physical controls

and im actually at the point in which i can live without the physical controls. Just give me more battery life and ad-hoc multiplayer. Im tellin you everyone is going to get one So we need to be ready to play some games.

I'm certainly not a fan of Apple but even though the Iphone's really not a good gaming platform it still works as a phone so is more practical than Psp and Nds, i mean i almost never carry my Psp with me so Iphone has the edge there, but for me Apple's just all a very hollow experience so will stick to my N95 and occasional Psp use, untill this new Google Android gaming platform comes out which could blow everything away.

Yep, the PSP games are more expensive for a reason: they actually take time to make and are longer. I doubt any Apple device would have any good RPG games, anyway.

iphone/ipod touch are cool devices but when you use them for gaming they are just an epik failure. who wants to play a game that has no buttons? its better to know if your physically touching buttons so you don't have to look away from the screen. don't even get me into talkin bout the games, i'll just say that they don't match up to portable gaming quality. on top of the little screen the controls take up to 1/3 of it. its alright for a normal cell phone gamer, but i wouldn't compare it to a psp, ds is alright but the games aren't the greatest.

To all of you people that thank Apple products are overpriced, you obviously don't know that Apple makes one of the most, if not the most, affordable smart phones (iPhone 3G, $99*), the most affordable operating system (Mac OS X Snow Leopard, $29) and the most affordable PDA (iPod touch, $199) and as for Macs, they too are affordable for their class. There luxury computers and the $999 MacBook and $599 Mac Mini are very affordable for a luxury computer.

I think your numbers are a bit off there, i can get almost every other smartphone for free on a 2 year contract including the N97, equivalent windows laptops can be easily 2 thirds the cost of mac, and Ipod touch isn't cheapest pda because i can get nokia 5800 for same price and that works as a phone.

you are almost right symbal. the n97 retails for $700. where you got free is beyond me. it comes unlocked hence the high price point.

as for other phones, palm pre, htc hero, htc touch pro2, and any blackberry are priced around the same point as an iphone (and many blackberrys you can get free with plans). and on top of that, many of the other comparable phone plans cost about $20 less a month. att forces data, minutes and text while tmobile, sprint and verizon bundle data and text. (not sure about the blackberry plans but i know they are about the same as an iphone plan)

but you have to give credit where credit is due. the iphone is a great phone for apps. you can get an app for about anything. and andriod has only around 8000 apps and palm pre only had about 12 last time i read. the iphone is a great pda and phone, but not a gaming machine

The fact is it's too much money period. This is even funnier because they said that kids can't possibly afford PSP games at 25-40 dollars, when the iPhone/iTouch costs twice as much as the PSP itself. Their whole statement is contradicting.

I like to use real life situations with my exerience of the idevice's features and most importantly gamez!

To everyone here who bought one i urge you to complain! If you dont know how to like me then we'll have to figure it out lol because our voices must be heard! So we can get what we want. Iam not liying when i say this "the idevice satisfies almost all my portable digital needs!" "it can and wil do more!".

But please enough with the car games in which the cars drive by theirself!

Better controls (put some more effort in it)

better framerate (because it can)

more multiplayer games (im tellin yall when the holidays come up everybody else is going to get one, even my momma wants to get one!!! So we all will want to play games with eachother)

I wish i could come up with some more examples for more people to read and understand where im coming from. Im not just ranting, this stuff is the truth!!! Any gamer who loves compact and hi-tech portable devices and bought this, they know what im talking about!

People think that the PSP Go is over priced but thats nothing compared to an iphone. Apple sucks at making games. I mean I'm not saying its a waste of time for them TRYING to make some games but they well NEVER, EVER compete with the DS or PSP.

I can't believe that hipster's delight of a dumb device is being compared to my PSP. The Touch can't even figure out what it is, and that's not to mention there's nothing cool about sitting on the subway with your index finger poised over the thing while fifty others around you are doing the same thing. And invariably those that have a touch generally have orange tans and either a cup of Starbucks coffee in the other hand or a Blackberry. GET A LIFE.

iphone is not a gaming device. PSP and even the DS blow it out of the water when it comes to gaming. Just because they offer some 21k + games doesn't mean ****. Trying to play any decent game on the iphone is a horrible experience. Sure, it's good for little games like solitaire and hearts. Maybe tic-tac-toe, but games such as NFS, Granturismo, Assassin's Creed, and anything else that requires some power and a decent set of controls needs to be left to the real gaming devices.

There's only ever been 1 true gaming phone and that's the N-gage.. everything since has been massively compromised to try to appeal to everyone, i think N-gage's failure scared other manufacturers from making proper gaming phone, the Iphone's showed it can work now so hope we get one soon, i'd like to see Psp phone but Sony f*ck everything up that they try now so hoping for Microsoft or something.

I've had an iPod Touch since the beginning, and since the novelty wore off, all I use it for is listening to music and watching video.

Playing Monkey Ball is only fun for so long.

With the PSP, I have Portable Ops, Crisis Core, GTA, and a raft of homebrew, not to mention all of the PS1 games I have too.

The Touch is a decent device, but the price I paid for it now seems quite steep, considering what it's used for versus storage space (16GB).
