An EA buyout by Microsoft makes no sense, says Pachter

Microsoft and EA - Image 1

Always quick with a comment, Michael Pachter has weighed in on the rumor about Microsoft buying Electronic Arts. As far as the Wedbush Morgan analyst is concerned, the rumor doesn't hold any water at all.

In an email to Industry Gamers, Pachter said,

[It makes] no sense at all. One platform exclusives would likely nullify NFL exclusivity, could kill off all sports and other licenses.  EA's value on one platform is probably half its value to a multi-platform buyer (such as a media company).

Pachter's opinion also got support from other analysts. Reuters, who first broke the rumor yesterday, also updated its own story with this comment from Trip Chowdhry, an analyst at Global Equities Research:

Our contacts just don't see Microsoft buying Electronic Arts, no synergies whatsoever, and also not Microsoft's corporate primary focus right now.

Makes more sense than most of the comments Pachter's been coming out with lately.. i mean comparing Psp go's to Fridges... ridiculous.

Well if Pachter is saying this, then microsoft will probably own ea by tomorrow night.

» WTF!?!?!?!?!

Good one!

Well, they don't own Bungie anymore so in actuality it does make some sense. MS is pretty low on first party blockbusters.

Just because Microsoft doesn't own bungie anymore or too many high class companies doesn't mean jack.

Microsoft Game Studios is an excellent publisher, and you know when a game goes through them it will be a hit. Halo 1, Fable, Forza, etc. I'm also speaking in terms of PC gaming. Microsoft doesn't need EA, and strategically speaking they don't need exclusives. They make enough money off timed exclusives as it is.

Besides, when a game hits the 360 it has to pass by Microsoft anyway. They just choose not to throw their watermark on it like Sony does.

M$ will own AE if they accept but that will kill many games audiance , like fifa , NFL and NBA , i think thing like this should not be alowed bcz its not competetive and kill game market .

NFL? There's no longer a choice when EA has exclusive rights to make NFL games.

Stupid rumor, EA spent all their money buying out companies, that they themselves would get bought out too. The 360 would dominate even more if that were to come true. I hope it does come true, just so I can hear all the PS fanboys cry some more.

...BUT, since he just can't always be completely right, I don't agree with his reasoning. Just because Microsoft bought EA (hypothetically speaking) doesn't mean that automatically everything would become single-system-exclusive. Even MS isn't so stupid as to try that. But regardless, there's no way they're moving to buy EA so it's moot. I just had to disagree with Fudge-Pachter somehow.
