Abandon ship! Mortal Kombat Team wants out of Midway

Can we be just friends? - Image 1After spending 17 years with Midway Games, the Mortal Kombat Team is now in talks with other publishers, looking to abandon the sinking ship. If this pushes through, the bankrupt publisher would lose one of its key assets in its difficult struggle to stay afloat.

According to Midway sources who wished to remain anonymous this team of 50 publishers is already negotiating with other publishers who, if all goes well, may just be the new home for the team. One of the causes of this planned exodus is the lack of payment bonuses due to MK team members based on meeting MK vs. DC Universe sales targets.

When asked for comment, Midway reps didn't say exactly what the team is planning at this point, but they did stress that the latter is in "good shape" and that Midway itself is not holding out on Mortal Kombat Vs. DC Universe developers. "Midway is not refusing to pay out those bonuses," PR reps told Kotaku. "It's the unsecured creditors committee that is refusing to allow us to pay them. They're the ones holding that up."

If the team leaves, though, the IP that is Mortal Kombat will remain with Midway, and only the talented devs who've been bringing us all the bloody fun for years will be going. However, the Mortal Kombat 9 in the works right now will face a stifling blow if it loses the team behind its success.

» Hmm

The way I see it... Midway is screwed. They've been scraping by for years - releasing mediocre games. They should just be put out of their misery and the MK license and team picked up by someone who can do it justice.

I want at least one last MK done by it's creators. They can at least finish off the actual storylines of all the characters. MK Armageddon had the bleakest endings out of the whole series, but didn't finish off anything.

» MK games were bleh after MK4

They should have stuck with the 2D fighting system.

MK is a sinking ship.

The games used to be fun back in the SNES era, when you played with friends, but nowadays, they're mediocre at best.

» the MK devs blow

After UMK3 and then MKT the series hasn't been worth touching. People talk about how the MK series are AAA titles. When was the last time we received a good MK title?

I will admit that MK Shaolin Monks was pretty good, but let's change the subject around and base it off that this is a one in a life time thing that the MK devs will most likely never accomplish again with their slew of *****ty game after *****ty game.

Now I'll admit the MK series has had some good characters. Why not turn the series from the ultimate ***** fest it's become to an actual good fighter? Maybe make a deal with Capcom? Mortal Kombat vs Street Fighter? Mortal Kombat vs Capcom? Though could Capcom even make the games into good fighters? It's not like they'd have much to work on with even the original games being bare bones as it is and never as good as any fighting games of that generation.

» Yep...

Haven't touched an MK game since Trilogy. I lie. I actually played MK vs. DC for 30 seconds and cried after. I shouldn't have even laid my eyes on it. I'm going to burn in hell for that.

MK3 + Trilogy we undoubtedly the best. I remember MK3 from the old MS-DOS days, and it wouldn't work in Windows, then Trilogy came to the rescue.

MK4 was also very high quality. The fatalities were the most violent. After that they tried to balance the characters and make it like Tekken and failed.

» Mortal Kombat could be good again

They just need a strong story, good game modes, a lot of depth in the characters, and a lot of great endings. It wouldn't hurt to make this the most evil, brutal one yet either. If Mortal Kombat 9 is good I will buy it.

» And Video animation

One of the things people forget is that the Mortal Kombat game + name was MADE (in the early 90's) on the fact that it used digitized video data on top of the 2d. In other words, they had REAL ACTORS photographed for each character, not polygons. If this series were to really go into a new direction (and go back to its premise), it would return to photo-real characters but mapped onto polygons. With today's look for the Mortal Kombat charaters, if you removed the 3d and went back in time ....MK would NEVER have distiguished itself amongst all of the Street Fighter clones-of-the-day when this began. The only reason the violence caused such a stir at the time was because it was using real-looking characters.

Mortal Kombat's never been great. Bad character design, awful controls and the only thing that set it apart from the million other fighters in the 90's was the pathetically bad 'violence' and digitized sprites that seemed more flat than pixelled sprites. First couple were amusing enough in a dumb way and MKII was about as good as the series ever got but it just always seemed like one of those bad horror movies that just kept spawning worse and worse sequels...
