Cubed's Adam Riley was able to get an interview with Square Enix's Senior Vice President Hiromichi Tanaka. Several new bits of information were revealed and several clarifications were made. Below are the finer points of the interview.

Anniversaries and Consoles - When asked about the Final Fantasy 20th Anniversary project and whether or not Nintendo systems will see something special, considering that the franchise started on the NES, he responded by saying that games will be made for as many platforms as part of the project

Tanaka notes that the Wii will not be able to cope with Final Fantasy XI. Apparently, it has nothing to do with the hardware since the game has already appeared on the previous gen PS2. It has more to do with Nintendo's current online stance - which is not wanting people to interact online without the aid of Friends Codes. The bright side to this part is that Square Enix is currently in talks with Nintendo about coming up with a solution for this problem.

Franchises and dream teams - Tanaka san does not believe that the Secret of Mana franchise and the Seiken Densetsu franchise will see a remake or port in the near future, he does not however rule out working with Koichi Ishii on a future Mana title.

When asked for a clarification regarding the future for Chrono franchise, he says that it is certainly not out of the question that Chrono will make a return, it is just that it will come down to working out copyright details between the various members of the original team (Toriyama, Uematsu, Sakaguchi) most of whom are no longer staff of Square Enix.

Saving on development - In light of the FFIII engine, and the speculation that it might be re-used for other DS games, Tanaka notes that Square Enix has a habit of starting engines from scratch for each game. He says that this is proving to be inefficient and they are looking to amend this. Especially given the rising development costs of next generation titles. Aha! Reasoning behind the Unreal Engine 3 license.

That outlines most of the points covered. For a more in-depth look at Cubed

UPDATE: More PSP rumors -
1UP reports Squeenix looks to be bringing the recently announced PSP remakes of the original Final Fantasy and Final Fantasy II to the States. The evidence that sparked this rumor? A removed listing of the games on EBGames.

EBGames says that the game should be available on retail in June and July at a US$ 39.99 price point. 1UP notes that while EBGames listings are a good tool for prognosticating the reality/existence of games, the listings are not trustworthy when it comes to release dates and prices.

» I say...

they stop porting over FFI & FFII to the PSP, and port over FFIII from the DS ;)...then, I'll have no reason whatsoever to be interested in playing a DS ...hehe

» chrono

Square give mist walker to rights to chrono! i want a GOOD chrono trigger game, not slowly declining chrono game made by square

by Threatened - 2007-02-01 13:19
» lol?

did you screw up the title on purpose?

by OH WOW - 2007-02-01 13:30
» you must be retarded.

Only 2 "Chrono" games made and both were awesome WTF are you talking about.

by xnjcx2008 - 2007-02-01 13:48
» Excuse me?

"Sadly Tanaka-san does not believe the Wii hardware would be able to cope with Final Fantasy XI, which was sad to hear since the game has already appeared on the far inferior PlayStation 2."

Far inferior... I don't think so.

by DigiTalDeaD - 2007-02-01 13:49
» Hmmm

Was just thinking the same thing, a bit stupid putting Squeenix in the title but never using it in the actual article.

by Strangler - 2007-02-01 14:29
» re

how is this a major update>=? Its just a bunch of rumors and speculation, and tlak of old games everyone played and beat already. WHo cares about 10 yr old games.

by DigiTalDeaD - 2007-02-01 14:32
» Clever

I see you used "Squeenix" in your update

by hj - 2007-02-01 14:48
» Yeah

If by clever you mean gay then yeah

by DigiTalDeaD - 2007-02-01 15:00
» True

Indeed it's gay, i hate it when people make up their own names for things by shortening them (is it really that hard to just go ahead and type the missing 2 letters?) but i was being sarcastic when i said clever, he obviously saw my comment saying it was stupid to use Squeenix in just the title and not the article, so he put it in the update to try and redeem himself

by joe - 2007-02-01 15:18
» Dumb Square Enix

I hate this they think people want to play remakes of FFI and FFII. If they want people to really pay 40 they should at least make the games 3D.

So SE start showing love for the PSP and not this CRAP.

by Elrian - 2007-02-01 16:02
» To Joe

Dude, lot of RPG fans still enjoy the old school 2d Graphics!

by Weezy - 2007-02-01 16:34
» OH GREAT

So Square-Enix wants to make a new Chrono Trigger?Lets hope they can even bring Toriyama, Uematsu and Sakaguchi for alittle insight. Actually Toriyama is with Square. Sakaguchi on the other hand is with Mistwalker and i think they're in ties with Xbox to make 3 games or somthing and Uematsu has his own company, he can do what ever he wants. I will end up buying the game but I guarrentee the team they put together wont even touch the dream team of Toriyama, Sakaguchi, and Uematsu.

by Saigon - 2007-02-01 16:38
» I agree

I'm looking foward to these games. Although I wish they would make original games more.

by Adam - 2007-02-01 16:55
» Woot

now Squareenix can run another great series into the ground just like they've done to Final Fantasy.

by briT - 2007-02-01 17:17
» ehhh

Yeah, I'm with Adam and Weezy. Unless by some off chance they can get the three together again, it's not happening... I mean, it could happen, but it most likely won't be near as good.

by Neuromancer - 2007-02-01 17:26
» PS2 inferior to Wii?

Yeah the PS2 kicks the crap out of the Wii, just like the NES kicks the crap out of the PS2. Not.

by Neuromancer - 2007-02-01 17:29
» Who cares about 10 yr old games?

Someone must, otherwise these games wouldn't be at the top of the sales charts every single time Squeenix releases a port. Can I go out and buy FF6 yet???

by Mac - 2007-02-01 17:40
» Original team?

I don't want to see a Chrono Trigger game without the original team. I don't want to see ANY game or story without the original team working on it!

If it's a new team, let them use their own ideas instead of insulting us and the original creators.

Uematsu did contribute on the Chrono Trigger soundtrack, as did Matsueda Noriko, but Mitsuda Yasunori has the honor of being the primary composer.

It is very interesting, and pleasing, to hear that they have to work out copyright with former employees of the company. That the creators retained so much of the rights while producing under employment contract is quite amazing.

by Weezy - 2007-02-01 17:54
» Easy top 5 soundtrack for game

"Uematsu did contribute on the Chrono Trigger soundtrack, as did Matsueda Noriko, but Mitsuda Yasunori has the honor of being the primary composer."

Yo Mac, thanks for clearing that up.

» who knows what im talking about :(

i think technically the wii is still behind the ps2 in terms of hardware..

but if you go to the arcade and play tekken 5 dark ressurrection you would assume the arcade machines are as powerful as the ps2. but this is also not true. the arcade machines hold much lower spec machines which run a more optimised code port of the game. well not to mention DR never came to ps2 i think its to be released on ps3? anyhoo, point is less hardware doesnt mean lesser game, but it does place restrictions.

by skythra - 2007-02-01 18:58
» huurrr

i think its really dumb how people put together two words to make a new name. how hard is it for these people to think of an original alias.

by haxor - 2007-02-01 19:16
» Well...

The Wii is technically more powerful than the GameCube, and the GameCube is technically more powerful than the PS2. Even recent PS2 games don't look as good as the first-gen Zelda for Wii. I don't know about "far inferior", but it definitely isn't quite as good.

by c - 2007-02-01 19:20
» That's not the point

Everybody still loves the 2D classics, but when you can buy the console the original is on and the original game for less than the re-release something is wrong. These should be no more than $20.

by tterbed - 2007-02-02 02:23
» New!!!! RPG's

What Happened to Square? Where did all their programmers go? We would like to see NEW RPG's not rehashes of old ones. They were able to make games for NES, SNES (quite a few ones, not all Final Fantasy), Gameboy, PSX, then then now 4.5 Final Fantasy titles for PS2. They could have had a couple PSP titles out by now, at least one?!?!? I'm tired of these kid RPG's on the PSP.

ur lot r gay

» to haxor

i suggest u to wait for god of war 2 and then ill ask u if don't look even better than the wii's zelda.

by memoHDCV - 2007-02-02 07:20
» but.

its just that they saw all the profits they could win from remaking all those GREAT RPG's since they saw all the people frenzy for a FFVII remake and they are jus thinking about $$$$$, but i think a remake of chrono might be good. Im also a fan of parasite eve but i think thats not gonna happen :S

by Bearmon - 2007-02-02 08:09
» lol

2-D rocks! 3-D is okay to me. Expect Rockman/Megaman 2-D rocks even more than 3-D games of Rockman/Megaman.

by chronop - 2007-02-13 01:20
» no they didnt

some people that worked on chrono trigger went to mist walker...

"Chrono will make a return, it is just that it will come down to working out copyright details between the various members of the original team (Toriyama(chara cters), Uematsu(music), Sakaguchi(game) ) most of whom are no longer staff of Square Enix."

did you even read that... anyways toriyama still works for squeenix cuz of dragon quest so that part is taken care of...
