24% increase in software sales, Wii to outsell PS3, predicts Pachter

Michael Pachter - Image 1Wedbush Morgan Securities analyst Michael Pachter has let loose a couple of predictions pre-empting the monthly NPD Group report. Most notably, the predictions of a 24% increase of software sales this April and the Wii significantly outselling the PS3 by a huge margin are something to watch out for.

It's not all just blind supposition, if that's what you're wondering. Based on PS3 and Wii sell-through figures in a four-week period that ended this May 5, Pachter also shot off the forecast of the Nintendo DS getting a massive boost of hardware unit sales from Pokemon Diamond and Pokemon Pearl.

He also cited recent sequels (God of War II, Ghost Recon Advance Warfighter 2, Guitar Hero II) as key players in the April increase - as well as major movie tie-ins like "Spiderman 3" and "Harry Potter" keeping the PS2 alive for the months to come.

As for the rest of the predicted hardware unit sales figures (Pachter's, of course), here they are in full:
  • Wii 300,000
  • PS3 100,000
  • Xbox 360 175,000
  • PS2 250,000
  • PSP 200,000
  • DS 450,000
  • GBA 100,000
Well? What do you think? The numbers are certainly quite generous, but only time can really tell if they ring true or not. Keep it locked here for any and all developments, and maybe even share your own predictions in the comments.

wow, what a genius... who would have thought?

seriously this guy is paid a lot of money to look at a graph and just continue a line and go 'i'm amazing, i've figured out how much they're going to sell without even being told'... it's a joke.

Spiderman...the game AND movie were a joke. This guy should at least ask his kids if the games are any good before he goes predicting a games worth based on movie box office numbers.

» You jump up only good news for the PS3 and the bad news for other systems ?

Actually this is the same person who a few weeks ago said something negative about the 360 so ALL you PS3 owners pressed the JUMP IT UP BUTTON so why dont you do it now?, same with the news that the Wii is kiling the PS3 yet you dont press the JUMP IT UP button for that either, STRANGE..

Regardless of how bad the game or the movie are. They will BOTH be hot sellers based entirely on marketing. People are seeing the movie without caring what mr. critic said about it and they'll do the same with the game.

by Useless - 2007-05-15 01:06
» Obvious?

How is that obvious if he's basing his forecasts on hardware/software sales? The simple fact is the PS3 isn't selling now so he's just predicting it will continue to not sell well, it has nothing to do with opinion.

Go to google and type

» @ Quixand

I guess what nm is trying to prove is that ps3 fanboys are so starved for good news, they will jump it up just so they can go *look! look! its not bad news about the ps3! everyone look!*

And when good 360 news hits no one jumps it up because good news for 360 is an every day thing. The ps3 fans circle the 360 forums like vultures, waiting for that miniscule tidbit of slightly bad news so they can finally let out all of that frustration that theyre in last place in the war and their $600 was wasted on a 360 with a forced bluray player attached to it.

» Wii Idiot

Dude, you truely are adept, what is your basis on? Market Units in the U.S.; Units Sold to Distributors; or Units Sold in Commercial. Anyways as stated you have little knowledge of you prospectus (Iwouldn't want you as my Financial Advisor).

1st the Wii in the first physical quarter of the year Nintendo only had 300,000 units to distribute, not in a month. Let's see, learn your facts, know them.

2nd PS3 figures are dismal almost a month and a half ago they already stopped shipping the 20GB Units.

3rd Xbox 360, I know for a FACT the first shipments of the Elite totaled 200,000 units (Sold Out) this not to mention the totals of the Pro and Core Sold.

So in closing, don't talk about what you don't know about!

» PS2?

Who still buys so many PS2s? (not knocking it, everyone knows its a great console) I just find it odd with all the "new" consoles out there.

» Wii Outselling PS3

The reason that the Wii is outselling the PS3 is because the Wii is $250 while the PS3 is $600. It has already been proven that the Wii is more powerful that the PS2. Anybody that will pay $600 for a video game machine should have a gun put to their head because that is what Sony is virtually doing to people when they buy a PS3.

» Wrong Ben, no one is forcing

you to buy the PS3! The Wii is selling like crazy because of the novelty and the price. Everyone I know loves the sports game it came with, heck I dig it too. Other than that there is nothing to play.

each one of the comments to this story manages to be the dumbest comment I have ever read in my life.

» this guy

this guy base everything off past performance when ps3 was coming out he said ps3 would sell out even at a higher price point like 800 dollars all because ps2 was selling well for the last 2 months the 360 has outsold ps3 by 30 percent, last month 360 sold 199,000 while the ps3 sold 130,000 so once again he is going off past performance he does not know anything about the videogames because he is not a game publisher or gamer.

» To that idiot Tony B

WTF, about spiderman, yes the game wasn't too great, but the movie was a joke??? now that is funny, while it wasn't as good as the first or second it was still a good movie... and i think that the actors and everyone involved in the making of it is laughing it up because the movie has made over 430 million worldwide already, $240 million in the US...So they all really give a ***** what you think about spiderman, they are bathing in cash right now....save your breath noob.

by metalspector - 2007-05-15 07:41
» LOL

I understand you nm, but you should consider that the reason a few ps3 sold was because of fanboyism. The ps3 sucks compared to the 360 and on top of that is even more expensive, yet the name playstation is enough to delight the hardcore fans. I obviously think fanboyism is retarded but you should consider a good percentage of the people who have access to internet connection are retarded. I for one (like I have expressed in various different posts) want sony to give up cause they were good when they didn't make videogames (walkman, great cameras and TV,ect.) but now their electronic market sucks.

» Don't beat a dead a horse.

Qj.net's community is comprised of mostly Sony fans. It's only natural any good news for other consoles won't be jumped whereas bad news for competitors or good news for Sony is hailed. Kotaku I have to say, is slightly better than Qj.net (coverage wise), but their community is made up of mostly Nintendo fans.

That is the way it is, so just chill on what isn't and what is jumped. Take comfort in knowing that Nintendo is having a great time and showing that their gamble in the industry is paying off.

» All the figures are quite generous

I agree about the Wii. The first thing I thought when I saw the sales prediction was "You mean there were 300,000 units AVAILABLE to sell?". However, I don't know where your 'inside knowledge comes from' regarding sales of the Elite, but I would find 200,000 in the early part of May to be an ambitious number. I'd be truly surprised if demand had been that high, especially considering that for $100 more those supposed 200,000 people could have had a Blu-Ray player included (amongst other PS3 niceties). My prediction is that the number will be a lot closer than in the article, with PS3 slightly under 100,000, Xbox maybe around 125,000, and Nintendo somewhere about (but not near 300,000).

» Respect for Tony B

Spiderman 3 was most definitely the worst of the 3 movies. People can look at the user reviews on imdb to see a good cross-section of valid reasons why. I have an interest in the game, but after how bad the movie was, I'm real hesitant to follow through (especially since the box says it requires a 2.5gb install on PS3). Based on my experience, and those of my friends, I can only say this: if you actually ever read a Spiderman comic (especially one with Sandman or Venom) you will absolutely HATE S3. Otherwise, you'll think it's ok, but far too long a movie. --I base this on the comments of 5-6 people I know who've seen it.

by Gryff33 - 2007-05-15 10:40
» Neutral take

I'm not going to contribute to the childish fanboyism in these comments. I'm going to make a neutral comment.

This is the first analyst report in a while that is actually based on solid data and recent trends. I've been seeing a lot lately that are based purely on predictions of success for as-yet unproven features as well as anticipation of events that have been explicitly denied by the people who would implement them. It's obviously impossible to know whether a prediction will turn out right, but it's more likely to be right if it's based on solid info.

Pachter never said he thinks any system will do badly. These are his predictions for a single month. In the grand scheme of things, they mean nothing. That's another thing that makes his predictions more reliable that others: he's focusing on a shorter time period, not trying to anticipate how things will be years from now.

I agree with the coment about the Wii having only one good game. And thats the one that it came with, Wii Sports. I see a couple of games this year that i would like to get, one being Super Smash Bros. and Mario Galaxy. Mario is one of the coolest little characters other than Cartman from South Park. Characters does not just limit it to video games, thats if your wondering why i was comparing it to a show vs a game. But there are more games coming out for the PS3 in the long run that i would like to get, not to include the nine that i already own. LAIR, Assassins Creed, GTAIV, Unreal Tournament, MGS4, Hevenly Sword, Mercenaries 2, and Stranglehold. Those are games that are coming out either by the end of this year or early Quarter 1 of next year. At least to what has been anounced to my knowledge. I am in no way saying that i would not like to get one. I would just rather wait for more games.

Who cares. PS2 and PSP are selling well IMO. I hardly think the competition is between Wii and PS3, it's between PS3 and 360, what I consider the real next-gen consoles. PS3 is year behind 360, so it needs time to pick up. Just wait till some of its major games are out, hopefully by then the price will be reduced, and it will sell just as many or even more than 360.

Wii is selling more because it's cheap, that doesn't make it a better console and it certainly doesn't have better games. Numbers don't always tell you the true story.

a blu ray player?

what about games?

I guess games, such as yourself, only care for the dvd, hd, music player...instead of playing on the GAMING CONSOLE.

sony isn't forcing you to buy the ps3! just forcing those who want to buy...get an expensive blu-ray player....in a GAMING CONSOLE!
