12 year-old kid hospitalised due to PSP theft

Kid CryingThe Barnet Times are reporting a violent robbery of a PSP which resulted in a 12-year old boy being hospitalised. As the boy was leaving his school in Hendon at about 4pm, a group of teenagers approached the boy.

The robbers then threw the boy on the ground and robbed him of his PSP and mobile phone, injuring his hand in the process. He suffered a concussion and was treated for the cuts on his hand and  had to stay at the hospital over the weekend.

The Police have revealed earlier that two-thirds of all street robberies involve the theft of expensive portable electronic gadgets, and they fear that the PSP will follow the iPod as the new "gadget-to-rob". There have been two more violent robberies of the PSP since it came out.

Acting Detective Chief Inspector Murray Duffin, of Barnet police, said: "Sadly, small portable items of technology are just too much of a temptation to some of the criminal fraternity, and things like PSPs and iPods that are not used in school should maybe be left safely at home or kept well out of sight when in the street. The amount of violence used in this attack was unnecessary and gratuitous and we would hope that anyone with any information about this incident will contact us quickly.

One robber was described as Asian, aged about 18, and was wearing a green camouflage, hooded jacket. A second was a dark skinned European man, also aged about 18, and wearing a navy blue hooded top. If you have any information, call police on 020 8733 4595.

I feel bad for him, but at the same time I gotta ask what does a 14 year old need with a cell phone? A PSP I can see it is for games but who is a 14 yr old going to call that couldn't wait till they got home. I wouldn't be surprised if people took up money to get him another PSP just cause he is a kid. Let an adult or older teenager get theirs stolen and even if they do get hurt no one would think twice about getting them a new one.

What was a 12 year old boy doing walking home, by himself, from school? What was he doing with a cellphone? What was he doing with his PSP at school?

yeh it is very common today for kids to walk home. just today some kids came to my house asking if they could borrow my phone to call their parents cuz they walked home and no one was there waiting for them and they had no keys. the were maybe in 1st and 3rd grade. i let them hang around my house till their parents got home. but yeh parents are being very irresponsible these days. they shouldn't have let that kid take his psp to school. the phone, i understand considering kids sometimes need to get a hold of their parents sometimes for emergencies.

» That kid is incredibly stupid (not to mention SPOILED)

At 12, all I had to "show off" was my Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles lunchbox. It was made of metal, and hurt like heck when swung at a potential thief.

I always keep my PSP concealed, as well as my cell phone.

My methods of self-defense have drastically improved, though: I have a thick black viola case (I play viola) that could literally knock someone out.

If you're gonna be in public with something that expensive out, of course someone's going to want to grab.

This kid's parent's should have bought him a LeapFrog or whatever those little educational gadgets for kids they have nowadays. He's never going to learn if he plays PSP games all day. Homebrew, on the other hand, could teach the child a lot. Although it is HIGHLY probable that the tyke knows of homebrew, and has 1.5/2.0 firmware.

I assume his parents wouldn't buy him GTA, so eLoader is ruled out. On second thought, maybe his parents would buy him GTA. Either way, I doubt he'd be aware of what his PSP is capable of.

He should have gotten a LeapFrog/electronic dictionary/some gadget like that.

when you think about it , a psp is 300-400 dollars , a cell 1-200 + fees psp +game(s) , this kid is 12 years old so a 12 year old carrying at the least about 550 in easily stealable goods , a 12 year old has no strength , eventually either parents will realize strapping their kids down with stuff and letting them go to school with it so they can be "cool" isnt a good idea especially alone , or 12 year olds can carry a 20 dollar gun with them as well for their personal protection no? i mean think about it , we all have it in us to take from the weak , its always so tempting , no matter what you say , of course i feel sorry for the kid , but maybe hes not so innocent , flashing a psp around perhaps? these days victims arent as innocent as they seem

You may not realize it but every time people laugh at another person for his misfortunes or bully him their actions leave a lasting impression, doing it too much can ***** a guy up mentally for years. Shut the ***** up and let the kid keep his dignity in this situation.

1. Because school is a place where you LEARN not and Play together not some place where you get to be anti-social

2. I dont want to seem like a big super rich showoff

3. I really dont think I have time for playing it at school or on the bus

» I was there to prevent a similar situation...

Last saturday I was babysitting my little sister in law who is 13 years old, and loves to play Zelda games on my PSP, while in the car. We stopped at a gas station in my local neighborhood to get gas & some drinks, and I told her to stay locked up in the car, that I'd be back shortly. From inside the gas shop, I could see her inside the car playing away in Hyruleland while all the sudden these two guys, who looked ages 16 to 18 were looking at her very closely from outside the car's window. I stepped out of the gas station, dropping everything instantly, and as I quickly approached the car I looked at them & said; "You kids loose something?" I glanced at my little sis inside the car and she looked like she'd seen a ghost. One of the punks dumbly said toward me "She's got a PSP" and the other one stared back at him very seriously as if telling him to shut it. I replied; "No kidding" "How much you want for it? It's mine". There was silence, and I said "What, no money?" "Then get a job & get going". Then an adult stepped out of the gas shop & asked if there was a problem. The other guy finally talked and said No, and then they left. I'm never leaving my little sister alone even for 3 seconds....and It's not about her having the PSP, even though I get a lot of fun out of it, I care much more about her safety.

Well, you did get pretty theatrical about the whole thing, sorry. That was a little out of line, although you did seem to get pretty excited about the whole thing. Maybe consider writing a short novel on the subject?

Don't leave kids unattended/lock them in the car if you have to leave them, stay within sight of them, etc. Yes, normal, every day things. Children do need to be protected from the sick and demented people out there and most normal people accept that. You need to bring up your kids in such a way that they know not to pull out a diamond when there's a lot of magpies around (yes, I just made that up myself). What I said before on this topic still stands - Barnet is a *****hole, I'm really not surprised.

so following on from this does it really seem such a good idea to have the rumoured camera add on for the psp?

i mean think about it if you can get it stolen from you when its in your pocket or firmly gripped playing a game how easy will it be to steal when you raise it in the air to take a photo.

Seems really sensible to me..... not!

» Wow...How cool are you?

Funetik or whomever the ***** you think you are, you got a serious problem posting ***** like this:

"And then you kept going and got to the woods where you had sex with her?"

I'm trying to tell everyone here about the seriousness of the subject of this news... that being, leaving a kid alone(even for a little while) with or without high tech electronic devices...and all you can react to is with a garbage post like that. Then you rant on about how I should go write a novel about my "thetrical" post because I got a little "excited" with it? Let me tell you something, and get it straight. What I posted was in fact lived by me and my familiar, and was 100% real.If I feel like sharing something that I went through with the community about a serious matter, it gives you absolutety no right to go soil on it like you did. You don't know me, but I clearly know you now. Your the type of selfish bastard with no life whatsoever that thinks he can get away with anything by entertaining bad-apple youngsters in threads like this, where all ages express themselves. I pity you, and whatever you've gone through in life, after all it's only shaped you up into the lesser man, woman or child that you are today. I also think you're a real nutjob for trying to correct your wrongdoings with that other post. Some people just don't belong in this world.

by funetik - 2006-04-04 06:50
» Probably not very.

Alright, so I pissed on your story and for that I'm sorry. As for me not having the right to, I disagree. I just couldn't care less how close your little sister (in law or whatever) was to having your psp snatched from her or how you acted the big man in front of two, obviously handicapped, guys.

You don't know me, no matter what you think, and you're right, I don't know you, but then I don't want to. Maybe I'm the social outcast who made the "discusting" comment, but at least I'm not the one giving the little spiel about how I saved the day. Do you have any understanding just how insignifigant your experience was? Ever heard the expression "Worse things happen at sea"? Well, they do. In fact, worse things happen pretty much everywhere other than your car when your 13 year old sister and your psp are involved.

A worrying amount of people are thick as two planks, it just upsets me when something like this happens and everyone's all over it. It's nothing. If your little sister lived in South East Asia, she may have been the centre-piece in a brothel 5 years ago. No, that isn't a cheap insult, but an entirely possible scenario.

Do you really need to swear like a sailor and get all agressive when you type? If anything you're encouraging these "bad-apple youngsters" and adding fuel to the fire that burns behind their eyes.

» captainX's tale of woe

I was violently assaulted in my home village the other day.. I am now missing 2 front teeth. I wasn't 'flashing' anything around, my only crime according to the scum who attacked me was that I was on the streets after dark and I didn't have 50p. The police came and took the scum in, and then let them go. An hour later they assualted another person. That is the state of affairs in Manchester UK at the moment. People should be allowed to walk the streets without fear of being assualted, or robbed. The next weekend they were in my village again, and they assaulted some more people on the Metro. This weekend I saw them again and I had to leave quickly- they attack anyone who they have attacked before. This was at 7.15 PM on a bustling high street, and what have the police done? Jack-SHI T thats what! I never take my PSP out anymore and I have been forbidden to go out after 5pm. Council house fuc kers are the only law here it seems.

My policy- round em up and shoot em, guilty or not. I feel sorry for that kid, but at least he is not ugly for life like me.

if you're 12, then why the **** are you carrying around a PSP anb cell phone for?? especially when going to school!! he got what's coming to him alright.

if you're a parent, you should know better not to let a child carry expensive things with him alone.

by Anonymous Coward - 2006-04-04 07:06
» -_-"

why the hell does a 12 year old need a cell phone for? like honestly. This is why I never bring my PSP to school cuz there are idoits like that.

by Apoklepz - 2006-04-04 07:07
» OK.I'll give up on you like your parents probably did.

Listen man I'm really just wasting my time here with you, so let's just call it quits, OK? I'm in my job right now and I have to get back to work. + I really didn't write this up for people to see how tough and "super" I am, I wrote it because unlike you I care about things, even If they happen all the time...See that's why nobody wants to take a stand today, because they're so used to watching "stuff" like this & think it's normal, besides nobody having the time to educate their kids "streetwisely" but then again it's not the kids fault, it's their guardians. So go on say whatever you want, I really don't care about you or what you do with your life, just don't come over to my neck of the woods. Another thing, keep sharing your scenarios with people, it suits you.

» WTF???

Here in P.R. there are more thefts than in USA ( probably sine we are a USA colony ) but never have been registered as electronic device theft in a violent way , here in P.R. more than 80% of theft is car theft whch here inmmy country at least 30% of the people who aremedium class people get their cars stolen once or twice and like 15% are store robberies whci normally here in P.R. you experience a real life roberry in the store you are at the time you are at the store at least 3-4 times and all of them are with somebody pointing the cashier with a gun on his face ( though they never shoot cause the cashiers always give them the money ). The other 5% are normal robberies but electronic device roberry are less than 0.02% of Puerto Rico's roberry issues.

Uhhh......... some of you guys desperately need to get a life. Put down GTA and realize that theft especially from a minor is horrible and a crime. Yeah he probably did have it comin' by flashing them around like that, but that's no reason to laugh. Think about if you were 12 (which from the atitude of many of you seems like you're much younger than 12 and lying about your age) would you want your PSP stolen? I wouldn't but I'd like to see some of you immature morons being mauled and yours taken. I only take my psp out: at home, on a trip, while visiting someone and that's just about it. I definately wouldn't take out my psp at school, it's just plain dumb but not funny. I hope those who disagree get mauled in a dark alley and get their PSP smashed to the ground because some of your ideas are just inhumane.

I agree with you 100%. I usually don't have a problem with what the administrators put on the front page, but I don't understand why they thought it was neccessary to put up the thieves race and originality as if it made a difference. They should've known that this place has a knack for attracting idiots [as well as intellectuals] who post retarded ***** like I've just read above. A criminal is a criminal, and that's all you need to know.

I feel sorry for the kid. He nor his parents did anything wrong. And saying he should've left his gadgets at home ultimately defeats the purpose of the term "portable". Get a dictionary *****s.

» what the heck??

Looks like Apoklepz was trying to share his story as a warning to everyone that there are teens out there who are willing to do pretty much anything, battery, assault, to steal psp- and where did you guys get the idea of..wtf??

Of course, the kid doesn't deserve any of the beating for just bringing his psp to school since it's a 'portable' system (duh)- yet we are not talking about some G.I.Joe action figures but pretty expensive gadget worth $250. It's not just safe, period.

WarLord,

you don't think people know it's 'portable' system?

Sure, it's a portable system and one can take it anywhere he/she wants. But while everything's permissible, not everything is constructive. You take your psp school and you are putting yourself as a target- I did take my brother's $400 walkman and got stolen long time ago back in high school-

S*** happens and sometimes it happens because by ignoring what's out there; in this case, ignoring the fact or didn't know about it while exposing his psp to the teens out there who will literally do anything to get a hold of your psp.

I really don't give a s*** if it's portable or not; but one needs to be taught that it's simply not safe to take an expensive gadget to school. end of the story
