11-year old college grad says videogames are "a waste of time"

Moshe Kai Cavalin - Image 1He's a future astrophysicist, a martial artist, a College Degree holder at the age of 11, and he doesn't like video games. Child prodigy Moshe Kai Cavalin graduated with honors from East Los Angeles Community College just last week, and made it known to the world that he thinks video games are "a waste of time."

Before you go attacking the kid, hear what he has to say: "I feel it's a waste of time playing video games because it's not helping humanity in any way." Okay, that is definitely flame-bait material, so I'll just have to remind you guys that he's only 11 years old.

He may be a college graduate at such a tender age, but that doesn't mean he doesn't stand to learn anything new anymore. He's got his whole future ahead of him, and am sure he'll one day find the time to change his mind about his graduation statement - especially with college comfortably tucked out of his way.

» I disagree.

Gaming has essentially made technology increase by leaps and bounds. The demand for bigger and better hardware has changed the world. Wasn't it just reported that the Folding@Home project hit the petaflop level due to the PS3? I know that Folding isn't really a game, but looking at that protein and making it move around has to constitute as something right?

» I'm with Anhmeister on this

Sure, it itself might not be "helping humanity", but it's helped in the same way war does, though with slightly less catastrophic consequences. Very few of humanity's greatest acheivements were made on purpose, most are simply the by-product or something else.

Though I must say, even for an 11 year old, he does sound like a self-righteous little brat to be honest. It's nice he wants to make the world a better place and all, but what goods that if we don't relax and enjoy the world being a better place.

» he has a point

if he wasted time playing games, he would not achieve what he has.

most of us might achieve much more in our lives if we would not spend so much time playing games.

during my studies, when i gave up pc gaming i quickly found a lot of spare time for myself. it's like giving up smoking - minutes that you would usually spend going out for a smoke quickly add up, and you discover you have quite a lot of free time for yourself.

i used that extra free time to learn some new things, which in turn helped me to get a decent job. so i kind of agree with the statement that games are a waste of time.

but i don't think games are a total waste of time - they are a great way to relax once in a while.

» worry about the kid

I don't really care about what the kid said. He's entitled to an opinion despite a lack of information. I'm just a little worried about his life/future. I mean, at 11 he's a junior college grad as well as involved in martial arts? How much time has he spent building meaningful relationships with kids his own age? If most of his time has been spent with older generations, he's not forming the same-age peer bonds that are valuable to the psyches most people, if not everyone.

I hope his parents aren't pushing him to be more than he himself wants. I remember stories on child prodigies going to college a few years back. My teacher found an update on one child and found that he was so unhappy that he dropped out of college as a teen and disowned his mother. I can't help but wonder if we're going to see something similar in this kid's future.

If he wants to help humanity he should grab a gat and kill as many people as he can so that he can help reduce global population. Human is a doomed race with all it's problems. Lol, a community college. And he was simply forced to learn that fast. Most grade schools only teach you so much at once, it's not like the brain has to be on some "level" to learn what he did. Genius my ass.

And gaming isn't a waste of time. Games were created for fun, and having fun and enjoying your life is more important than anything else. This kid probably tried them and sucked such hardcore ***** at them. Probably played for like 2 minutes because he thinks he's the most intelligent being on the earth that he'd instantly adapt or something.

» Typical academic...

Intelligent but not smart.

Games teach us a great deal about other cultures - it was gaming that inspired my love of Manga, which in turn made me friends in Japan who I'd never have met otherwise.

Gaming fosters friendly competition, provides new ideas and acts as an outlet for writers, artists and software engineers. It also creates jobs and supports the economy.

But then, he's 11 years old, and he clearly understands nothing about social science, economics or the value of friendships forged through shared interests.

Still, if he is a genius, maybe he'll get it in another 6 months ^^

Everyone knows that video games are just a distraction. When you're sitting in a small room for extended periods of time doing nothing constructive of course it's a waste of time.

by akadewboy - 2009-06-07 21:28
» Interesting

That's an interesting way to put it, I suppose the demand for video games has influenced people to make better technology but that doesn't change the fact that when a person is actually playing them they accomplish nothing. Much is the same with many forms of entertainment, not just video games.

by Dark_Skai - 2009-06-07 21:37
» "Intelligent but not smart."

I agree with this statement from Acteon, he's clearly intelligent, but being intelligent isn't being smart, someone already mentioned it, although he's achieved a lot he's probably not going to be very happy due to lack of social skills to develop friends in his age group, sure your able to talk to adults, but that doesn't change the fact that your still a kid, no matter what you do they will always think less of you. As for his statement yes its a waste of time and no I believe it does help humanity, remember when the PS1 was first launched the crime in the US went down significantly, I'd say that's helping humanity.

He is right in an aspect of it and wrong in another.

He may be right in the way that it really doesn't help humanity to sit at home on your @SS all day and play video games when you could be going out playing a sport or doing something more constructive than leveling up your Paladin.

The other aspect that he is wrong is that video games help with emotional baggage that people carry around all day, every day. Much like movies, tv shows, and books, you sometimes just need an escape from reality just to deal with the stress of everyday life.

Yeah, video games is waste of time...

I will have to disagree on that one.

Please define "video game" and what sort of video games you play. I am sure there are many upon many video games thats been made to help kids learn in an interesting/interactive way, it is true a picture will be easier to remember than just plain words. And I am pretty sure most of you have been touched and learnt more about life through out the stories from these games, its not like ALL games are bad and meaningless. Actually, I'll take that back, even meaningless games does have purpose and a good purpose, which is too release tension and pressure for the big bad world out there for aldults so they are able to cope and move on in some situations. Its funny how he does martial arts and saying this at the sametime, sure he can say its healthy now, I am sure he will change his mind after he breaks his arm.

To be honest i think he's just a naive little kid, who's head is to big for his body.

» Genius?

What is a genius? I'm sure this kid could lecture me on Astrophysics all day, and kick my 20-year-old @ss with his crazy Bruce Lee skillz, but I could just as easily talk about Shakespeare and the Romantic poets all day long, and put me on a football field (English football) with him and I'd have him all over the place. I know he's 11, and it is impressive that he's got a College degree, but that's ALL he's a 'prodigy' for.

He'll have hardly any friends, no hobbies and a boring life. I play videogames, and have done since I was very young, and while some games are there simply for a quick blast (fighting games, racing games), there are games that do actually qualify, for me, as a proper means of entertainment. For instance, Final Fantasy VII has at least as good a story as anything I've read, and the strategy that goes into playing it well (as well as the likes of C&C) do actually contribute to intellectual skills. Also, I play guitar. I'm not in a band, and I do not sell my music; it is just a pastime. But do I think I'm wasting my time? Absolutely not. I think this kid better realise, quickly, that hobbies are not a total waste of time, because without them we'd go insane.

Now if you'll excuse me, I'm going to play PES.

by alias_neo - 2009-06-08 01:07
» Agree with above

Video games teach us a lot about culture and other things, peak interest in other areas. And much more.

The kid clearly isn't as smart as his status makes him out to be, to say video games are a waste of time is to say films, music, theatre, paintballing, and anything else recreational for that matter is a waste of time.

Gaming is another form of entertainment, although it does overlap into other things like community (Home/LBP), intellect (puzzles), culture/history (A/C, CoD).

All these things are a part of life that inspire creativity. As a university student myself, of Computer Science & Electronic Engineering, I feel we need things like games, music and all other things I mentioned, plus more in order to relax. THe workload can become quite stressful and without a way to "wind down" people wouldn't perform as well as they could.

That being said, without the creative inspiration of games and the like our intellect and academic studies would mean nothing because we wouldn't be able to apply a creative mind in order to produce something new and original.

As a final note, how much of his childhood has this kid lost to that? And how much will he REALLY have "achieved" by the time he reaches the age I will be when I finish my university degree next year ready to go see the world.

What makes playing a sport more helpful to humanity than playing a video game? Let me ask everyone this. Can you tell me of ANYONE out there that never does anything that anyone could construe as a "waste of time"? What is the definition of "wasting time"? According to this kid, it's anything that doesn't help humanity. That just sounds like the politically correct response, and I would expect more than that from a genius. Seriously, if you aren't "helping humanity" by doing something, all of a sudden it's not worth doing? Some people actually don't have the means to do things like go to college and take karate classes. That doesn't make them or the things they do worthless. Hopefully he realizes that when he grows up.

» I gotta agree with the boy...

Video games are a waste of time. BUT, they are entertainment. One could argue that any entertainment is a waste of time, but it is still something fun to do.

Going to a water park? Doesn't achieve anything, therefore a waste of time. Still hella fun though.

Seeing a movie? Doesn't achieve anything, therefore a waste of time. Still nice to take a break and do something relaxing like that every once in a while.

So yeah, video games do waste time because they do not help us achieve anything real in life (with the exception of the very few who are good enough to play tournaments--they earn money), but it is still something nice to do every once in a while.

As was said in the article, he is only 11 years old.

He's not old enough to vote, in the U.S. at least.

His opinion of anything doesn't really matter until after he hits puberty. And all that really is, is an opinion, no need to make a big deal of it.

BTW, sports in the mainstream give people something to be entertained with, it is more active and is 'supposed' to involve being healthy and living life to the fullest.

My turn to ask you, TranceKuja, how does playing a video game compare to the thousands of people who go to watch sports at ballparks and stadiums?

Heck even the actors/actresses who star in plays/movies.

How does graduating college at Eleven help humanity?

You are rushing your life. Last I checked, you are ruining you own humanity by being a boring person. Video Games aren't meant to help humanity anyways. You are stating the obvious. Video Games are meant to be entertaining and FUN, 2 things you may never know it your life. You wanna help humanity, find alternative sources of energy that won't rely on foreign oil *cough* Iraq *cough*, and go plant a tree. Eleven year olds are so naive, they think they know everything. Kids say the darndedst things!!!!

by enigmaticdude - 2009-06-08 04:36
» One more thing that I have to say

Children, like Celebrities are given way too much influence on the media and the people here in the US. You won't believe how many times Oprah's advice has been followed over a Doctor's advice. Jenny McCarthy's tirade against Vaccines because it causes Autism is also a HUGE issue here. Autism is Genetic, there is nothing that could cause it or exacerbate it.

Children believe in ghosts and stupid adults have shows that follow them around to look for them and they find "odd sounds" or "strange readings".

If anyone read The Crucible, you will find that in the era of the pioneers, there was belief that there was witchery about, when there was none at all, and children for some unexplained reason were a huge influence on who was a witch or who wasn't a witch. People were killed pointlessly. This is true in reality.

When will The US realize

CHILDREN ARE NEVER RIGHT!!!

Flame me for what i said, but i backed up what i said with facts.

What do you mean, "how does it compare"? It's pretty much the same thing. You're sitting there watching other humans run around, or you're sitting there watching pixels move around. That was exactly my point, playing a sport is just a way to keep yourself entertained. Just like playing a video game. What it all basically comes down to is the attitude that "my entertainment is better than your entertainment" and anyone that is even halfway intelligent know such an idea is stupid.

by UltimaArmorX - 2009-06-08 04:49
» You may be onto something with that.

Because part of the aging process below 18 (to my knowledge) involves the brain expanding and developing abilities like logic and what ever else there is that fully grown adults are capable of doing with their brains. I don't remember. Maybe it's in wikipedia. (more info I mean)

My point is, I've played video games since I was 5 or 6 and I still play them today. The difference is that over the years I have become a better player. We're not talking about experience on a single game either. I've had most of the consoles.

Time has allowed my brain to enhance my video game performance.

It is no wonder to me what the kid says. He obviously has had little if not any play time. Lastly, it is nothing more than media candy, it's one of those "oh hey this will make great news" articles. At least 1,000,000 people with an IQ below 120 have said video games are a waste of time. Hell, I knew a redneck who said it once.

» community "college graduate"

pfffffffffffft

At my old community college, I could have earned an "associates of science" degree very easily.

For example, it doesn't matter what math courses are taken, as long as you take 4 of them. You would think that they would require like Calculus 1-4 or something. But most take 3 algebra courses, and a statistics course. All of which have identical content to high-school algebra and high school statistics.

A community college degree doesn't exactly mean anything, because it's too broad. That's not to say that a community college is worthless for transferring to a 4 year university though.

It is all a matter of perspective. I left university because the course was boring and unchallenging not to mention costing a fortune. A lot of kids could learn all the crap they teach these days if their parents are willing to pay for it.

More importantly it depends who you're doing something for and that's 99% philosophical. Do you care about society? What are your opinions on death? Do you think it will matter what you do? Do you care? etc etc

He is a genius...duh.

Obviously games are a waste of time, so are movies, television and chatting on forums.

If you can't realize that games are a waste of time there is something wrong with you.

The thing is, most of us like to have some rest and relaxation in our lives and do not like to constantly be working and over-achieving.

Like everything in life, you need a healthy balance.

by TranceKuja - 2009-06-08 09:06

Just as much as watching humans running around through a television, I imagine.

» In my opinion

I think that this kid has never tried playing video games. Cuz im 13 and used to not like video games until i put a playstation controller at 8 years old in my hands and played Final Fantasy VII i lost and i said to myself "interesting" because for some reason even though i lost i did not get mad, i just wanted to beat the game and now i am 13 and i love video games

"not helping humanity in any way." WHAT! well think about it this way.. video games have created more jobs and in my opinion game desighners and testers get paid a lot of money so that means:

less unemployed people = and more money

and more money = more circulation that HELPS THE ECONEMY

if there were more idead that could create more jobs like video games did then america would not be in the crisis that is right now with all the unemployment and budget cuts.

i have played many intellectual video games that teach me thing that i never knew. Certain games can help you n real life situations.. video games make you figure things out so you would have to think and focus. did i mention the hand-eye coordination that comes with it.

some of the things that i listed may not help all of humanity but its just benefits of playing video games.

don't knock it till you try it. cuz if you do then you are no smarter than the rest of us. book smarts cna get you a degree and a job but commen sense can help you in the long run

by HacKeRsLiM - 2009-06-08 09:30

» Astrophysicist

How the hell does an Astrophysicist help humanity? Oh gee, their is an asteroid that will hit earth someday. Oh we have discovered another supernova that won't help ***** on earth. How about helping the growing rate of poverty in the world, or starving children.

» idc if he is a 1 year old and says that

to all who hate video games SUCK MY NUTS! and I don't care how many thumbs up or downs I get (there important to the Economy), cause they depend on someone to buy them to get somewhere, so it may be a health hazard but for Christ sakes the box/packaging of a game tell this, And they are most certainly helping Humanity (cause people games take hell of a lot of stress off of me and surely you too)

To the editor..If the kid is only 11 and you clearly typed

"so I'll just have to remind you guys that he's only 11 years old."

He may be,but I know I am not alone when I say this but the kid has to be a odd one. (your child hood should be for the fun times with your family and junk like that, and not flipping collage.)

To my Fellow gamers, one day the Smart little, game hating 11 year olds will take over the world so stash your games away.

The blame goes to his parents, school, and his brain.

Look what happened to Midway (Mortal Kombats roots) Bankrupted.. (told you its important to buy games)

» Video games Help Humanity

The PS3 has Folding at Home which is a part of Stanford University's Folding at home, this is being used to find cure for all the major disease. I guess a waste of time to this kid. How about how video games have helped to advance medicine and the practice session in some larger Universities. How about how clusters of PS3's have been used to map black holes, hmmm astrophysicists huh, guess he might be using a ps3 someday to get some answers. How about also how many sutdies have shown playing action games help older people with their reflexes and how it improves eyesight in all ages? I think that is all helping humanity.

This kid needs to get out and play some games and get some video games and really see what it's about. He is garbage to me. Little *****in Nerd.

And at any rate I already agreed with you in my 1st post before you even posted.

befor asking why he think this about video games , we need to know :

- if he aver played a video games

- if he watche movies

- if he go outdoor

- if he have friends

- if he conenct to internet !

- if he speak to girls

- if he speak to his parents

- if he watche tv

- if he play sports

- if he go to cinema

- if he listen to music or hade a ipod or iphone or maybe a old nokia since iphone is a waste of time for him

- we need to know his day plan

realy this kid is a danger for humanity 5 like him and video games will be banned globaly .

by AngryYoungPoor - 2009-06-08 22:31

by saldude2 - 2009-06-08 22:49
» LOL

then everything we do is a waste of time (according to this kid) eating, sleeping ,talking etc cuz it does not help humanity.

besides HOW can we help humanity? by getting good marks/grades or by inventing something new (hopefully he does'nt die by then)

by idonlikeveg - 2009-06-09 02:40
» Hmm I have to say that

In a way he is correct, but if you have ever played games, you should call this spare time - not wasted time, i dont think that time is the correct word.

I am currently developing a game for personal use on my PSP, its a bit like space invaders originally developed for windows by Zuntyh, anyways he has sent me a modified version which contains functions. a modification which improved response of the game immediately. he made this mod within a week.

now imagine the amount that could be done by a number of people sharing information on a large game. advances would be huge - ie constant improvement in technology both in hardware and software. Think back 10 years ago, all using Windows 98se with 233Mhz processors, and now a Games console (PS3 in particular) has 8 core 3.2Ghz Cell Processor!

and now the humanity bit. Games actually may save humanity by saving their sanity after a hard day at work, it gives them some time to wind down and forget the world around them. overall it may improve their mood and therefore their productiveness at work - which is a good thing. I know College maths teachers that play Grand theft auto iv on sundays!

and plus having all that knowledge at such a young age, how good are his social skills? or does he sit inside and learn everything all the time? and does he know that time does not exist nor is it constant? - as time was created by humans to make sense of day and night, but space does weird things and i wont explain, it will take too long =D

the meaning of life is to simply live it and be happy, you are entitled to your own opinions. What do ps3 videogame adverts say? This is living! xD

My opinion is obvious =D

Can't live without a comfy car or my PS3 and PSP haha.

Martial arts are a waste of time too. It's not helping humanity in any way. Neither is going to college with adults.

So how do you get through college at age 11 again? Do they just say "wow you got a high test score! Why don't you go ahead of the other kids a couple grades?"

Public school in america is so retarded kids don't want to learn.

From the comments on this page, this is the problem with the american education system. When someone wants to overachieve and learn more, their peers drag them down.

by TranceKuja - 2009-06-09 09:30
» Even if you completely disagreed with me

It wouldn't offend me. What anyone chooses to do with their time is their choice and no one has a right to take that away/attempt to put them down, making it seem it's not worth doing. Carry on.

Well, that sounds like some sort of program embedded into the kid's head. Anyway, let's just wait out and see what this kid will contribute to humanity. Maybe he'll become the next Shigeru Miyamoto. The irony in that. :)

If you were forced to do nothing but school work so i'm you mind the only fun thing is to correct homework then you would have the same view point as this kid its like any other child prodigy the parents are really to blame. This kid will have no childhood and will wish he had when he gets older.
