Use 3 AAAs to power your PSP

Neubit of AcidMods notes that the next time he travels and his PSP runs out of batteries all he has to do is pop in 3 AAAs and he's set to go.

Hijacked - Image 1

Yes, folks, Neubit managed to gut a PSP Battery Pack and then fabricate it in such a way that it will draw power from 3 AAA batteries. Here's the long and short of it:

The PSP battery was opened up and the original battery was taken out, two wires were soldered to the +/- points on the battery circuit board. No resistors were used. The 3 AAA batteries were fitted inside the battery case and connected to the previously soldered wires.

If you're confident about your electronics skills, and you're willing to ruin a PSP battery pack, then feel free to click on our read link below. It should lead to Neubit's full tutorial.

If you're thinking that using 3 AAAs is going to be more of a hassle for you, then just skip this. But you do have to admit: this is pretty impressive.

by SteroidMitch - 2007-02-02 16:59
» yup,

these are all over the place, "great invention" acidmods you just made something that already exists!!! though i guess it is useful so if you have an extra battery and want to mod it.

wouldnt it be cheaper just to get a car charger

» Curious about battery life

I wonder what kind of battery life you get with regular AAA batteries and then with rechargables.

by akadewboy - 2007-02-02 17:28
» AAA battery life

An AAA baterry is about 900-1000 mah (depending on brand), so it should last about half as long as the official 1800 mah recharable battery.

by Slythfox - 2007-02-02 17:38
» eh...

These things already exist. I've seen them at Best Buy 6 months ago.

Besides... 900-1000mah vs 1800-2600mah batteries?

by Snarg - 2007-02-02 18:50
» .

Waste of a battery. The battery is worth like 3 times more than the already existing product that does this.

by seven - 2007-02-02 18:52
» ...

Yeah, but what fun is that?

by Mad Sceintist - 2007-02-02 18:58
» You Have to be VERY careful with this!

Sending UNREGULATED voltage into your psp can damage it. And, yes this already exists. But, creative and mad props for your effort and sharing this with us. If you are personally using this, make sure that you use all fresh batteries that are put in at the same time. If you dont, you will be sending variable/fluctuating unregulated power to your unit. This can eventually short out your unit or make it respond improperly to your actual psp power supply.

Be Careful!

by Mac - 2007-02-02 22:08
» Don't use Alkaline for this

Use NiMH batteries, or another battery suited for things like digital cameras. Those will provide more consistent voltage.

The voltage from Alkalines declines as they lose power. Not necessarily the thing you want from your PSP battery.

by Djhg2000 - 2007-02-02 23:30
» Think about the n00bs!

I'm pretty sure we'll see some n00b frying his/her PSP.

Problem:

Besides for the unregulated power, the charger would try to charge non-chargable batteries causeing them to overheat and make heavy damage to the PSP and/or injure the user.

Solution:

Use NiMH batteries.

Well a car charger might not work if you are traveling on an airplane, besides datel already makes this. $9 is cheaper that modding a battery.

buy the energyzer expensive battery for hi-tech devices they last foreverrrr I got the rechargeable battery and they last 100x more than the oem batt.

omfdog, this is Genius.

I GOT TONNES OF spoilt PSP battery at my game shop.

i'm gonna use this idea and repack all those dead psp batt! and make some quick bucks!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!

wow whoever made that must have a ton of freetime that is prety cool if i had 3 AAA batteries and patiance with myself id try it now

by Someone Sly - 2007-02-03 06:16
» ... Not really

Actually, if you use the right kind of batteries it works just fine. I'm not expert at stuff like this, I've talked to other people about battery mods and such. the 3.6v is a give away for what it takes (3 1.2v batteries, which I believe would be NiMH)

you can do this and ruin a battery pack... or you can get this http://www.futureshop.ca/catalog/proddetail.asp?logon=&langid=EN&sku_id=0665000FS10072359&catid=22444

» What would be best?

What should I get? I've got 2 1800 mAh batteries, it seems like 3 AAA batteries would last longer, so I'm wanting to mod it, but I don't know which type of battery I should use? Can someone give me some advice?

by hush404 - 2007-02-03 10:03

AHAHAH. There ya go. $20 and no hassle what so ever.

by SnowFire - 2007-02-03 13:06
» Why not get the MintyBoost Kit?

I just recently purchased a kit from here: http://www.adafruit.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=14&zenid=477432f462cba526719fdf25715a59ed

Requires some soldiering but the thing works just as advertized. 2 AA batteries give me at least 2 (or more) hours of juice on my PSP while on the go. I use rechargeable batteries to save money too.

by DigiTalDeaD - 2007-02-03 13:42
» Well

I for one hope that a lot of psp's will be blowing up because of this stupid mod, only lasts an hour, and to recharge you're going to have to buy a separate charging unit for the AAA's if you don't already have one. A travel charger would be cheaper, and to who ever said "a car charger wouldn't work while travelling on a plane" You can't use psp's on a plane dumbass, and they forbid you from takiing standard batteries on planes due to the high pressure and the fact they could explode...

by anantha92@hotmail.com - 2007-02-03 15:07

No they don't who tf told you that. I always use my gameboy and psp on the plane. Wht airlines you taking?

» You seriously can't get any dumber.

// In case you didn't notice, the PSP's chipset doesn't have built in circuit-protection- the standard 1800/2200 mAh lithiums (and also the 2600/3200 lithium) operate at 3.6 volts. Using 3 AAA's without resistors is pretty foolish - a standard 1.5v(initial) voltage x 3 = 4.5 volts. Although given this amount would gradually decrease with usage, the PSP's DC board is designed to take a consistent 3.6 volts (+/-) 0.25, I believe. Using 125% of the standard voltage is bound to fry something (not to mention overheat). In addition, alkaline AAA's are only around 900 mAh, so this isn't very practical either. A better solution would be to stop whatever you're doing and set your PSP ablaze - it's easier that way.

» you guys are retards

have any of you gone to the acidmods site? ITS ABOUT MODDING AND HAVING FUN! You *****ing *****s take the fun out of everything that anyone brings to the scene... Neubit posted this on the site a while ago, and I did the mod... its pretty easy and FUN! F-U-N... Having FUN is something that smart people like everyone on the acidmods site do when we are bored.

Only complete retards will do this mod wrong and ***** their psp's up... This mod is not n00b friendly, and those without the experiance should buy some PCB and LED's and wire that up to get some experiance before attempting this. Who gives a flying ***** how practical or useful this is? Its more creative than anything you have or ever will do in your entire life combined.

We at acidmods are all about exploring new things and having fun. and yes, a mod like this DID already exist which is, im sure, where the insperation came from. however you are *****ing retarded if you didnt notice that the Datel product is EXTERNAL, and Neubits is INTERNAL! So without having to carry something extra in your hand you can game more efficently, so this mod IS practical. Thanks to those who give acidmods and the creative people who come up with mods like this your support. those that dont, ............... Go play in traffic or something... your time will be better spent doing that than flaming people because you are too stupid to think of something like this on your own...

» you da noob

noobs frying there psp hu? you would be one of them because only you would use non-rechargables in this case. You have to get 3.6volts and the easiest way to do that would be to what??? im not an electrician but i would USE 3 RECHARGABLES you noob which is exactly what the author of this said to do...

by TheNight - 2007-02-03 19:38
» there is a point to this

Guys, this is not a stupid artical... For those out there who's battery has died for good this is a GREAT way to avoid buying a new one. And by the way incase any of you are under the impression that you have to keep replacing the aaa's you didnt read the artical. YOU USE RECHARGABLES!

by -Neubit- - 2007-02-04 00:34
» Thank you

@ exiodus

Im glad some poeple can understand what modding is about. I will make the psp run off a hampster in a wheel, which is unpractical, but modding is about fun! so have fun, dont be hating!

by - Neubit - - 2007-02-04 01:43
» can u get any dumber?

@ elestialplasma

if you havent noticed the psp charger gives out 5V and the psp can runn off that alone. Also have u any idea what the chipset inside the battery does? just because u can multyply 1.5 by 3 doesnt mean u know anything about electronics

by exiodus - 2007-02-04 14:11
» damn right

dont bother Neubit... elestialplasma and the rest of these haters never opened a psp battery, and therefore dont even know that it has a PCB inside it... and if people are that stupid and hatefull i dont see the point in trying to tell them anything... they just wont understand... but as you said the psp charger sends out 5v and your batts run on 4.5v, so your good...

hey elestialplasma... why dont you try this with 2 9v batterys and tell us if it works?

by exiodus - 2007-02-04 14:20
» @ bamhm182

use whatever kind of AAA batteries you want. personally i use rechargeables so it doesnt cost me too much, but i always carry around some extra regular AAA batts. Duracell or Energizer2 would probably be your best bet for extending the life a lil... dollar store brands and other kinds that are not as well known have given me problems in the past. Rayovac is a little cheaper than Duracell, but you wont get as much time out of them.
