The original PS2 stick-to-PSP hack Part 2 |
Ó

Ben Heckendorn promised a Part 2 to his hack-a-PS2-stick-to-the-PSP project, where he would build some sort of casing for those loose wires. Here it is today, courtesy of Engadget. Of course, we already had Joe Stranger over with his own version, inspired by Ben Heck's Part 1 but which follows a completely different design philosophy altogether.
Joe's Ghetto Joystik obviously has the advantages of being smaller and more portable, and detachable from the PSP. Ben Heck's casing, on the other hand, is bulkier, although also detachable. But Ben's mod has the advantage of being more easily made - he says that it's easy for the casual modder to get his hands dirty on. As Joe hasn't sent us any instructions on how to make his joystick yet, we're making an assumption that it's a bit more difficult, since you'd have to machine the PS2 stick's "holding frame" (metal shop, anyone?).
Yeah, Ben Heck's mod is indeed bulkier. But it can be made. He shares his instructions over at Engadget, but we can show you some pics of the construction process, as well as the stuff you'll need:
- A can of Jerky Stuff (or any similarly-sized plastic can)
- Mini-USB set (port and jack) or an IC socket and header
- Soldering iron and of course, solder.
- Desoldering iron if you're pulling plugs from junk motherboards.
- A
Dremel cutting tool (or a similar cutting tool for the plastic can)
- X-Acto knife.
- Hot glue gun or other such gluing device.
- Super glue (I prefer the liquid kind).
- Goo-Gone glue remover, or similar type product.
- A 1/2-inch long size 6-inch screw.

1st comment woot!!!
wow...... someone has waaaaaaaaaaay toooooo much time on there hands, go look at porn or something.
This may not be as cool as Joe's mod, but this guy dosn't have those nasty finger nails.
It looks totally ugly and it screws the whole "Portable" Stuff.I dunno who was the other guy that did this, the guy which project didnt turn out so bad but it totally owns this guy,Big time.
But i have to say to both of them the following:
You know all this stuff could really impress me if the analog stick were inserted in the "Right" side instead of the "Left" side,You know.....Where is needed.
hes ugly
....
and this affects the psp community in every way possible.
...
yea i am whatever you think i am.
wtf why do u need this ***** for its just making ur psp become ugly. whats the purpose for this *****? useless!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!
i'm just saying. so many geniuses outthere, maybe someone could come up with an application. Once you run it, it would ask you to plug the usb cable from this mod.
that way, there wouldn't be the need to make another hole.
just my opinion. :)
it looks neat in the first picture.
That looks like crap. Joe's was way better than this. You shouldn't have even shown it off.
What is the big problem with the little analogue pad on the PSP? I think it's cool.
Guys, this one is a lot easier to make, although a bit bulkier. Also, it sets in a more comfortable spot.
wouldnt it make more sense to have the other joystick on the other side of the controller? as in reference to the only 1 joystick available when you need 2 for alot of ps1 games?
unless its just an extension to the original stick
That would be useless...unless the person also recoded every game already out...
The only way this would work would be to completely add new functions to the board, where as this is connected directly to where the other analog stick is at...and therefore it is possible. Putting the stick on the right would be worthless, and would function the same as the main analog stick.
So that was the guy with his shirt off in his other video.
The game is not yet made to write to those exact syscalls and function with it, games wont detect two sticks.
ohhh.
but its not impossible for homebrew to be able take advantage of the 2nd stick eventually?
why do u have to use a jerky can? it makes it look like it was made in africa or some crap country. and i feel kinda sorry for the psp. i think while u were making this p.o.s. gadget, u coulda been spending time with your girl friend or something. uhhh wait, the psp might have been your gf, i dont know. im just giving u some tips here. aight peace.
Sorry, you're referring to the guy who made the Ghetto Joystik. http://pspupdates.qj.net/The-Ghetto-Stick-A-minor-update/pg/49/aid/69875
is this easily detachable? what if i wanna use the d-pad instead, it would be difficult to reach with that thing on the way wouldn't it?
wtf does this news have to do with ds?
i congratulate the work, but Joe's looks more stable and MUCH more convenient working through a usb port and being very small
That's an ugly mod, lol.
why would u wanna do dat its on the wrong side theres a anolog stick there already if put it on the other side yeah dat would be alright but thats just stupid waste of an wonder sexy exoritic psp
From the photo caption.
What does manically mean???
The ps2 or ps1 analog stick has the same square socket/hole. So u could easily take the psp nub off and just place the ps2 analog stick on it. I saw it on this site but i forgot the url. its easier and doesnt void the psp and doesnt get u sued homeless wifeless and doesnt turn u into a crazy scientist guy ^^ like the guy in the pick
im annoyed now 1 the guys just showing an idea 2 it doesnt have to be *pretty* u *****ing dummies its not made for that 3 if u werent paying attention during mods 1 and 2 what make anyone think u will now IT CANT BE ANOTHER ANALOG STICK AND IT CANT CONNECT TO THE USB PORT ON TOP. ats just a mod*ification of the nub and its not a usb memstick connector it just uses a usb mini connection because well it works. geat job man u keep on thinking of new ways to make ur psp urs and pissoff dum *****s all around the world
why would a geek ask a noob question? sorry to be mean but for real ur acting just like the people in the initial release. it cannot and willnot be another analog stick though it would be cool it aint gonna happen
gay gay gay, get a life. ps you look like a gay *****wod, who never had any pussie
if you havn't got anything good or constructive to say, be quiet, nice one Ben, i couldn't have done it without you and i hardly ever use the annoying nub, it sucks, keep em coming.
And some knobs will be happy to know i cut my finger nails.
