PSP Fat backlight mod - for longer battery life |

PlayStation Portable modder Duelord came up with a very interesting modification to the handheld's backlight that should give the good ol' PSP Fat an extra hour's worth of battery juice. According to Duelord, the backlight of the PSP works with 20v even though the battery's capacity is just 3.6v. Take note that when you do this mod, it will be quite hard to play official games on the PSP.
However, Duelord added that this still allows him to run homebrew, listen to music, and view pictures. Aside from that, he's using this modded PSP Fat to downgrade the PSP slim & Lite as well as fix bricked PSP units.
If you are interested, these materials will be needed as provided by Duelord himself: screwdriver, resistors, soldering iron, lead, smd led, aluminium, sticky stuff and at least two hours time. Once you've acquired all of those, perform the following procedures:
- Open up your PSP Fat.
- Wire up the leds, the wires go in two little holes near the battery.
- Use aluminium to reflect the led, place the resistor behind the metal part.
- LCD popped back on it.
- I used some tape to scotch everything together and it works, apart from the analog stick.

ok.. so lets see.. take 1 perfectly good fat psp, open it up, remove backlight, solder white LED, wrap in packing tape, wrap in scotch tape, put faceplate back on, wrap in duct tape. lol with a little more searching he would have found out that all he needed to do was bridge the fuse which he probably shorted out on the motherboard LOL it happened to me. my backlight went out, one little smidge of solder and voila working to this day :D
well no i didnt open up a perfectly good fat psp. The psps backlight was seriously damaged. Yeah i even tested the backlight to see if the backlight was damagied or the connection. It ended up to be the backlight. Thats why i did this. Its quite practical as before i coudnt see anything. Now my fat psp has about 20% of the normal luminesence. Btw i did bridge the fuse, if you read the link down there youl see how i did it.
Why not just buy a new LCD (with backlight) for like $40? Sony uses an inverter to get the backlight up to the 20V. Also, if you didn't know what you were doing, this tutorial would be NO help whatsoever, it really sucks. Hey check out my taped together, analog not working, dim as hell, could short out any second, POS PSP! Well if he's happy with it, good for him I guess.
My phat lasts for a good 3-4 hours on a full charge with full brightness on, 5 hours depending on usage. Does it really make sense to go opening it up to gain a little extra time? Any story on QJ that involves opening up the PSP conveniently overlooks the issue that in doing so, you're going to get dust & particle crap all over the INSIDE of you screen. I've done it before and there's no avoiding it. It really makes the screen look like ass.. I switched it for a new one and would never think of opening it up ever again.
man fat psp suck compared to the new instead of wasting valuable with the old just sell it and get the new
i agree that is retarded to go open up a psp just for a couple of measly minutes. whoever would do this is a jay.
ever heard of unlimited homebrew or metal, durable construction? I'd take my fat PSP over a flimsy security lockdown version any day.
