Over 450 consoles seized in the UK for modding

Chipping - Image 1A little over 450 consoles and handhelds have been seized from a residential home in the UK for modding. Along with the consoles and handhelds are over 300 pirated games and 5000 "illegal discs". This marks the largest confiscation of illegal modding and pirating in the UK.

The act was prompted when officials raided a stall in Halifax Market. When they searched the tradesman's home they found 246 Nintendo Wii consoles, 168 Xbox 360s, 19 PSPs, 12 DS Lites, 6 PlayStation 2s, and 6 PlayStation 3s. The 5000 illegal discs they found amounted to a retail value of £50,000. All of them are now under the possession of the Anti-Piracy Unit of the Entertainment & Leisure Software Publishers Association (ELSPA).

Graham Hebblethwaite, chief officer of West Yorkshire Trading Standard, says about the raid:

Copyright crime is driven by greed and causes a loss of millions of pounds to retailers of West Yorkshire and to members of the music and entertainment industry every year. [...] The haul of items from this operation should send out a clear warning to individuals involved in the illegal copyright industry that they will dealt with severely. This sort of crime carries a maximum sentence of 10 years imprisonment.

Your stupid man, Americans are not dumb. Besides on another note, what was the modding for? To play illegal games? Or just modding in general?

"Copyright crime is driven by greed and causes a loss of millions of pounds to retailers of West Yorkshire and to members of the music and entertainment industry every year."

I think the exact same thing can be said for copyright enforcement, except it costs the tax payer. It sure is nice to know that my tax dollars go to aiding profit margins of large corporations.

by Anonymous - 2007-08-06 23:04
» lolwut

You're right. Taxpayers also shouldn't pay for the police, prosecutor, court, etc. when thieves get caught and sentenced for stealing from a store or factory or home that you, yourself, own.

After all, if they steal stuff from your store, they're reducing your profit margins, right?

.. i have said it before, to me, pirating has never looked so attractive as it does now cos off all these *****ty games that are hyped up.

there ought to be laws about that sort of stuff, sick of paying full price for games that should be in a bargain bin when released

10 years is prison for this ? You see who runs the countries laws these days... pirate a game, get 10 years... sell drugs to kids, get probation. We sure have our priorities straight.

by Crow - 2007-08-06 23:25
» You're a dumbass

Nobody sells drugs to kids. That's a lie the government wants you to believe to support how they treat drug offenders.

Murderers and rapists often get more lenient sentences than someone who gets caught with a pound of marijuana (a basically harmless drug since you seem to know nothing.) At least in the US anyway....

» they got lucky

guys this happened on the street i live on in halfax west yorkhire (close to leeds) i was there when the police raided their house. it happened about a week ago i counted around about the same figures of consoles coming out of the house. they got lucky though they have many more houses were they mod and copy games.

they also lie, i asked one for a xbox360 but they said they had non in stock ( they run a local games shop)

lying bastards. these guys are millionaires honestly they dont just pirate games but movies too just yesterday i saw one of the loading boxes of dvds into one of their houses ( they own like 5 houses on my street).

by Ass - 2007-08-06 23:29

I hope they get the PS3 modded so $ony will get even less game profits and people will start bi*ching when firmware updates brick their system and start class action lawsuits against $ony.

This will also further prevent a price cut and keep the PS3 from ever selling well. HA HA HA!!!!

» I lol'ed

Come on, there are Millions upon millions and millions of pirate's in the UK, not to even mention the US and China.

If you think 450 Modded consoles oh and Handhelds are really a lot, then i must say they're wasting their time...

Its like trying to kill a 5 million *****roaches with a rocket launcher..

by Longhair - 2007-08-07 00:55
» What BS

Companies crying about losing money on Software, Gaming, Music, Movies, etc. due to piracy is such BS.

People who downloading stuff illegally never had the intention of BUYING it in the first place.

As far as the 450 consoles and handhelds the police took - how do they know that they were being USED for piracy?

I backed up all my Music CDs to MP3s on my computer because many of them are out of print.

Now since a COPY of a game cannot be played without a MOD chip - this is where the waters get murky.

by joe - 2007-08-07 01:42

thieves actually should get whipped to death or something like that, so they learn that they cant steal. that would save on tax so there would be no police to support :)

» 50k punds only? geesh cheap compare to our country!

try going in Philippines, im a filipino and for us this piracy is a small time business, 50k pounds only?!? , for us ps1, ps2, ps3, psp, wii, xbox, pc games, software installers, modding and cracking just about everything! that can be cracked and all the stuffs are being pirated, so all in all in this kind of business goes a lot to millions! not only in thousand pounds...but raiders or even police cant stop this in our country, why? because its been runned by sydicates, gangsters, and powerful people even cops are allies of those pirate peoples, some are muslims too! heh!

Whether you refuse to acknowledge it or not, that's a very different situation! So stop spouting that crap.

by GrayFox777x - 2007-08-07 06:01
» What I think....?

I think it's kinda wrong to sell mass copies of pirated games. YOU are making a major profit from someone else's work. I say it's okay to sell a disc or two to people you know for a very small price as a service charge. It's a minor thing, so no one should care. And I think it's okay to download games.... why? It's because you aren't making a profit off of someone else's work! That's what the copyright laws are for... to protect your work from being stolen and claimed by someone else and to protect people from making a profit from your work. They weren't made to ensure that people don't download games! The DMCA is a pile of ***** and anything like it in other countries is too!

by Kutibh - 2007-08-07 06:07
» ya

Although I agree, some countries where poverty is so high there is no other alternative. I mean, the average salary in Syria is between $200-$400 per month. Expecting people to give up 25% of their salary for 1 game is like expecting you to spend $2000 on a game. Therefore the only choice is piracy as people don't have the money to purchase the originals in the first place (so the company's aren't really losing anything anyways)

by GrayFox777x - 2007-08-07 06:08
» Also...

I think it's fine to have, create, or install a modchip. Why? People should be allowed to modify their systems however they want. And I don't care if modchips aid piracy... that's not the point. Consumers pay good money to own their gaming systems, so they shouldn't have to deal with stupid restrictions places by rich corporations!

by GrayFox777x - 2007-08-07 06:11
» hmmm....

good point... they can't afford the games anyway... so I guess sometimes even mass pirating and selling of games isn't so bad.

by GrayFox777x - 2007-08-07 06:16
» access

cause giving people access to anything they wouldn't normally have is more important than already rich corporations getting even richer.

by Mister Common Sense - 2007-08-07 07:52
» what about the school system?

Learning DOES take place outside of public schools you know. Yeah the schools suck, but that doesn't make people stupid! Americans come from all countries, and saying Americans are stupid is like saying the whole world is stupid.

Where did it say that those 450 consoles were owned by them?

Not everybody is capable of putting a MOD CHIP in their own console, so companies will offer a service to install the MOD CHIP if the person sends in their own console.

Also, what exactly were on those 5000 "illegal discs"?

Movies, Music, NOTHING BUT BLANKS?

When a software company PUBLICLY STATES that they are losing money from "piracy" - this does 2 things:

1) Makes piracy taboo where it encourages more people to do it since it is a faceless crime.

2) Justifies OVER CHARGING for the software in the stores.

by ajh - 2007-08-07 11:08
» Unjustified

How can you get 10 years for selling a pirated game or dvd when some peodo rapes a young child and gets community service some foreigner in a uninsured car that kills someone on the road gets a fine and someone who commits murder can be out of jail in under 4 years? Someone needs to look at the justice system theft should be dealt with yes and people who break the law should be dealt with but sort the real criminals properly and then maybe people would have more confidence in the system.

5000 discs and so many consoles . . . . So what. . . . Start charging proper prices for the games and all will be fine. Greed starts at a much bigger place called Microsoft, Sony and Nintendo if all these started to play the game with cheaper games and hardware the need for piracy would be gone. FU to them all you only have yourselfs to blame.

by lega - 2007-08-07 11:35
» Oh stop it

No one said they are getting 10 years. The maximum penalty allowed by law is 10 years.

And please stop saying people would pay if the prices were lower. That's bull. DVDs are pretty cheap these days but that hasn't stopped some from downloading free movies.
