May the Force (feedback) be with you: PSP Rumble mod |
Ó
The story behind this has F00 f00 working on a client's PSP (client here being robin1989), and while trying to do some LED modding, got distracted. He started playing around with a little spinning motor from a mobile phone and decided try his hand once again at a previously semi-unsuccessful attempt at producing force feedback on the PSP.
A few minutes of tinkering, and boom, he's done it. He even says that it was quite a simple mod: where voltage being sent to the speakers would also be routed to the motor to power it. (We're not sure if he was able to finish the actual LED mod though, but hey!, distraction leads to Einstein moments too)
Now a PSP Rumble feature has often been discussed in online forums everywhere. Some say that for Sony to have included such a feature in their handheld would just be a series of lawsuits waiting to happen - gamers would start complaining how their grip slipped on the PSP when it did force feedback. Other people simply dismiss the idea, saying that such a feature isn't necessary.
Whatever the case - whatever your reasons might be - you still can't deny how cool this mod is. Props for F00 f00; another great mod to add to the growing library in the PSP community.

If this really is easy, I'd sure as hell go for it.
Second.
if $ony included that feature in the psp, why would people complain that their grip slipped? they would probably make an off option in the settings, like they had in PS2 games
The only problem now is how to fit it inside the unit without any major mods...
Nice work!
proof of concept is excellent. sound is the only possible option to tap into as a basis for reaction. the problem is:
will the concept be feasible for everyone?
unfortunately not without some heavy modding and/or possible mass production of the unit. there is simply no way to add the rumble feature into the psp itself (there is no room). rumble is achieved through the highspeed rotation of a an unequally distributed weight on the end of an electrical motor (like in the xbox controller), or through something like in the video which displaces a piston back and forth. either way takes quite a bit of room.
i have thought about this concept before, and have decided the best way to incorporate this is through a "rumble bar" of some sort. this would be a regular faceplate setup with the bottom part (where the start and volume buttons are located) is extended - this extra part of the faceplate would be the "bar" that contains the circuitry and moving parts. the mod itself for the end user would result in a new molded faceplate (with bar on bottom) and wires to tap into the sound. excellent proof of concept by F00 f00
nice analysis though...
8th!
9th!
The motor and the two chips will fit inside without any problem. There is a large space behind the wifi sisterboard for the two chips, there is also enough space behind the screen next to the umd motor gearing for a 10pin ic. the motor fits perfectly in the gap above the door release for the battery door.
Saying that though, I wont be installing this in that psp as it is the customer wasnt after a rumbling psp just some nice lighting effects. I may install it in one of my own psp's if I find the time.
bigger is better...too bad for slim psp...
Hey F00f00 thanks for stealing my idea for that mod. don't you remember that I told you how to do it? Man getting ripped off is one thing but to say that it is your creation is totally ***** WRONG! I thought you were a good psp hacker not one that ***** STEALS other peoples ideas.
REMEMBER THE EMAILS i SENT YOU? HUH? WITH AN EXACT DISCRIPTION ON HOW TO RIG IT UP. THANKS MAN FOR GIVING ME THE CREDIT ON MY INVENTION !!!!!!

Hey f00 f00, the mod I would like to use with your sound mod is a psp rumble pack. Y'see I get tiny pager motors from China real cheap. So I want to use the sound mod to power two tiny motors so that when we play our games the psp rumbles. I will do up a diagram to show you. the mod is possible for me because I have a couple PSP2TV faceplates, which have extra space at the bottom of the psp which can fit the motors. please tell me this not impossible and please do not tell everyone about my mod, I would like it if myself and you were the first ones to have it. can you send me back some pricing info on how much this would cost?
SooperGooman out.
go download some iso's or something
DO you honestly think I had never thought of this before you mentioned it? Its something we have worked on for a long time. To be honest I don't remember your email, I get 100+ a day almost all are descriptions of mods that people want doing, so you'll forgive me if I dont recall yours.
The mod dosent work the way you described it, with an audio amp alone it is far to sensitive and the motor will run almost all of the time. Hence me adding a micro controller to power the motor. The motor is not connected to the amp at all.
Besides it was only a proof of concept. If your disparate for recognition finish it off your self. I'd be glad to help. Assuming your not going to email me any more shouty messages.

Just in case any one is in any doubt about this Ive moved the thread (dated December 11, 2006, 12:45:07 am) from our classifieds R+D section to the public forum. The mod is discussed at length in there.

We have been working on psp rumble since last year and the day we developed the sound mod we knew we would be creating a chip to alow us to add rumble to the psp.. F00 F00 is in fact to be the first to design such a chip for the PSP. also even had we not thought of it back in december Just yelling out "how about we do this" does not mean you own a concept creatin a POC shows not only do you have the concept you also have the ability to achieve it.

Sorry about the repost problem with the page loading
This is amazing....NOT. THIS IS GAY WOW WHO CARES??? THESE GUYS NEED TO GO OUTSIDE AND STOP WORKING ON WORTHLESS CRAP FOR THE PSP!!!!!!!
This is so incredible and yet so simple.
The question is why didn't Sony think of this, they are smart enough to come up with psp/psp slim/and ps3 but they never went near rumble for psp, why the hell not, i mean it is ok if you can turn it off every now and again.
