Introducing the PSP's biggest fan... mod

Ó

If you thought Neubit's battery pack mod for the PSP took the cake for eyebrow raising mods, think again. Syn7h from their site has gone on another tinkering binge as of late, which conceived this interesting little upgrade:

PSP cooling fan - outside and inside - Image 1 PSP cooling fan - outside and inside - Image 2

Yup, it's a PSP-mounted cooling fan mod. And unlike some other company-sponsored parts we've seen before, this one sucks air directly into the unit's innards - which should make for more efficient cooling, and gives of a nice, powerful hum only a PC-mounted fan can churn out. What are the uses for such a thing? We're sure the guys who somehow find themselves stuck in Death Valley or the Kalahari desert should gets kicks out of this setup. Now if we only had a dust filter mod...

The cool part about this mod is that Syn7h guarantees it does not require any form of soldering, relying instead on either a tube of superglue, or a glue gun. Here's a rundown on what you need:

  • PC Cooling Fan
  • Wire
  • Hot Glue or Super Glue
  • PSP
  • Little Switch

Now before you get started, you will have to remove some components from the PSP, such as chunks of the UMD door and the UMD cradle itself. Make sure to read Syn7h's step-by-step instructions for the mod (click on the Read link), and keep your fingers crossed.

lol

why would you do that??? isnt a psp for playing games?? i guess you cant do that anymore after you have installed this:P ahh well we still can use iso's(A)
by - 2007-02-07 08:18:49
...

Excellent show of making you're self the pinnacle of human stupidity
by ultragoregrind - 2007-02-07 08:21:16
huh?

a+ for the original mod, but d- for like lack of a need for this. the psp is an embedded platform, and even at 333mhz shouldn't need extra cooling. ah well, still interesting. i'd never do it though.
by - 2007-02-07 08:26:27
lmao

lol
by - 2007-02-07 08:34:09
LOL

so anyone who wantes to cut their fingers... WELCOME TO ABOARD :D :D :D LOL but seriously WFT is this? i mean whats the real purpose? who would make a BIG hole on their psp's and just put a HUGE fan so ppl will say "REMEMBER THIS STUPID GUY WITH A FAN ON HIS PSP..." ...
by - 2007-02-07 08:39:16
wtf?

Wow, this will come in handy. I don't know about y'all, but my PSP is overheating all the damn time. So annoying when I'm browsing the XMB and poof, it crashes from the strain. Ok, enough with the sarcasm. This is the stupidest mod I've ever seen. Unless you live in a freakin' volcano the PSP doesn't need cooling. Maybe this guy plans to install a new high speed CPU or something stupid like that.
by - 2007-02-07 08:45:18
man

stop bugging him. nice mod although it doesnt look like i need that. i just simply open the umd door if i ever need to cool it. he is just showing you that it works. not that bad. if u dont like it then just shut up and dont do it. p.s. i would like to see any of you losers try to beat him with all of his mods.
by Illegal Machine - 2007-02-07 08:58:51
funny

at last someone found a use for the UMD related portion of the PSP!
by - 2007-02-07 09:02:32
battery consumption?

Well since the pc fan uses power to operate how much power will it drain from the psp battery, alot i assume. Also if I were going to do a cooling system on my psp I would do one of those liquid cooling systems even though if I installed it my psp would be to cold to get started. Nice work though on the mod, saw it on maxconsole yesterday.

QJ

they would post anything even a girl taking a shower while playing the psp and got shock.
by - 2007-02-07 09:58:03
yea

this is sorta useless i see it as being more damaging then anything i see this putting more particales of dust on the lens.. and the psp doesn't over heat anyhow even at 333mhz it gets warm but nothing harmful.
by - 2007-02-07 09:59:44
id pay to see that

so long as she's attractive
by - 2007-02-07 10:11:38
Ok

So how you insert umd's and stuff,i have seen a lot of mods but this takes the cake as the most Dangerous of all.
by - 2007-02-07 10:25:38
overclock past 333

if there was some way to overclock beyond 333mhz, i would definitely install this mod
by - 2007-02-07 10:31:58
what a bunch of 2ats

you lot are missing the point... this aint finished yet, he's got to add a few co-processors, graphics card, 300gig harddrive, mouse and a keyboard, do a memory bypass and connect it to a kingston 512kb 300ddr and voila a simple compact pc in your pocket!! :)
by - 2007-02-07 10:35:32
dowgago

i attatched a couple of technics to the side of mine its banging for 2 minutes then the battery runs out
by MickMog - 2007-02-07 10:37:30
friggin desert conditions??

lol, as if as psp blowing cool air INTO the psp is gonna interest u in the desert. hehe... cool mod for those who need it but i dont reckon psp overheats let alone to that degree... put the fan on a hinge & clasp lock so it can unhinge & cool u down in summer.....now thatd be handy. clip on tho, none of this non-reversible moddin for me
by - 2007-02-07 10:38:11
yeah...

...but if you turn WLAN on while at 333, things can get damaged.
by MickMog - 2007-02-07 10:41:01
aye, we still have iso

as long as u can rely on No-UMD mode working for all games thatd work
by - 2007-02-07 11:43:31
Built in Harddrive....

I would easily remove UMD for a built in harddrive...now that i'd like to see.
by Mister Common Sense - 2007-02-07 11:50:51
what's next?

Maybe their next mod could be liquid cooling with hoses connected to a backpack mounted radiator. Seriously, this is the absolute stupidest mod I've ever seen. Remove the somewhat useful UMD drive and replace it with a noisy, bulky, battery eating craptaption that solves a problem you never had! At least with some of the useless mods out there (like lighted shoulder buttons or UMD door) you don't have to sacrafice functionality for them.
by Mister Common Sense - 2007-02-07 12:36:05
that would be nice

as long as it's not like that sh*tty datel one that's slower than a memory stick, sticks way out, and has the same capacity as a memory stick.
by - 2007-02-07 14:18:07
Filter

Just cut a square of "anti static mesh". and put that in between the fan and the psp. perfect cheap filter. just be sure to check it bi-monthly. or depending on conditions ofcourse; each day.
by GaveUpTomorrow - 2007-02-07 14:51:49
Its called UMD games...

and there are actually people who buy them instead of pirating them like you. You should be in jail pirate.
by - 2007-02-07 15:52:05
Come on people

Yes, it's not that useful, but come on guys, it's just supposed to look cool! My personal favorite mod is the Ring of Light... It doesn't do jack, but it looks sweet!!!
by - 2007-02-07 16:27:28
Perfect Addition

This will be the perfect addition to my psp. The psp i made always overheats and this will be perfect for it. my psp has a 4gig built in hd -512 ram -better than ps2 processor (able to emulate games if emulator was created) -larger screen email me at ichiro51zr@yahoo.com if u want to help with the project.
by - 2007-02-07 17:21:35
its just cool

it looks cool. and even though the psp doesn't overheat it can become very warm if you use WLAN for a while
by Ryalla - 2007-02-07 17:45:43
333mhz isn't overclocked.

If you set your PSP to 366mhz, this may help. :P

by - 2007-02-07 21:24:16
Haah

Dam you QJ, i was hoping to laugh at some sony fanboys. Well, this is kinda dull, but it guess it can make the PSP's cpu run faster because that how computer works. But I'm not even sure if their is a fan in the PSP, I mean, wheres the ***hole where the fan blows out and are we even supposed to do it until it get hot enough for us to even have it heat it up that high? I know..... I talk alot of sh*t.
by - 2007-02-07 21:31:27
??

hmm, well is your psp processor 10x as powerful as a ps2? I dont care how much you modded it you wont be able to emulate ps2 games at a playable speed with it.
by - 2007-02-07 22:02:49
lol

PSP doesnt have the Nescessary hardware to emulate PS2 AT ALL! needs a better GPU for 1 and its cpu is only faster by like 33mhz lol! maybe 3 or 4 years from now though PSP2 or whatever it will be called im sure it will have the nesescary hardware
by - 2007-02-08 00:15:35
...

In other words, "Waaahhh."
by - 2007-02-08 05:43:51
How do you get the isos

you can either download them which is illegal even if you own the game, since its not a back-up of you original, or you run the umd and dump it to your computer, which would obviously here take another PSP
by - 2007-02-08 13:14:01
...

More like useless *****.
by - 2007-03-04 01:28:58
Why?

And the point of this is??? I suppose if you want to discharge your battery quicker...
