Cleanest looking DualShock external controller mod for PSP

While external controller mods for the PlayStation Portable have been around for quite a while, someone from the Acidmods forums was able to come up with perhaps the cleanest looking handheld mod using a DualShock controller.

Acidmods member Blizzrad explained how the new mod made use of a single 25 pin connector mounted above the PSP power switch, which was compatible with a DualShock controller. You can hardly notice the mod at all; seeing how neatly tucked in the connector is on the side of the handheld.

Most of the buttons on the PSP have also been neatly mapped to the controller. The right analog stick simulated the face buttons (similar to razor nub), and the L2 and R2 shoulder buttons were mapped to the left and right D-pad buttons. You can even turn on and turn off your PSP with the analog button on the controller, while R3 allows you to perform the Home function.

No you can't plug a controller into the USB port. Each button that you want to be wired to an external controller requires it's own wire/pin. That's why he used a 25 pin connection.

The USB port only has 5 pins and it's already hardwired to much of the PSP's functions, it is not wired to the buttons...

yes you could. thats not why you couldnt. this mod requires no drivers so you couldnt do it the same way but... all you would need to do is write a new prx to support it.

from what i have read in there forums, he didn't just re-wire the psp he re-wired stuff on the circuit of the dualshock controller. i also assume the controller uses power from the psp so you would have to hard mod the usb to give out power atleast to power it let alone making it function

you would have to one remove the current cable, and then useing 25pin cable wire it up to the board its self not to the 5 pins already used, a lot of work would be needed

doing so makes the dual shock unusable for the ps1 ps2 and ps3.

ill only be impressed if they make a port and a converter cable where you do not modify the dual shock and us it as it is.

its pretty much useless for me (and for most people) if they only clone the psp buttons on the dual shock controller. i would simply prefer to use TV as a monitor and the psp (slim) as a controller than endanger the handheld by hacking its internal organs.

and yes i remember a product which has done way better than this! PSP2TV

it connects your psp (1000) to any TV and even allows you to use any playstation compatible controller.

I stopped playing FPS on the PSP because it is so cumbersome to look around by clicking on buttons, this mod makes the use of the analog stick in a ps2 controller so that the camera movement and transition becomes smoother. I only wonder if this mod can be applied to a psp slim. I would , hands down, definitely try and create this mod. If you are concerned about damaging your ps2 remote buy an additional one and mod it, nobody said to mod your only precious ps2 controller it's just a demonstration with one of them.

Just a quick thought, why can't a usb driver be created for the psp that will allow you to just plug in a XBOX 1 controller since it is a usb device? sorry to offend the soony folks here with a micros*ft product but what the hell anyway? There has been a open source driver for the controller to be used on a pc for a long time now called XBCD. Maybe that could be bastardized to run on the psp? someone smarter than me could surely figure this out. perhaps have the configuration set up in the VSH MENU? then we would need no hardware mods at all!

They should create one that's compatible to the slim and also create an input for ps1 controllers. Maybe the sixaxis and ds3 may work 2.

Im going to buy a slim if they create one for it and it can go connect to the tv

The standard USB connector only has two data pins. The other two pins are VCC and ground. Also, you would not need a pin for each button, most controller designs these days use only a couple pins to handle all the buttons.

Modifying the PSP's USB connector to supply power is fairly easy, all you need to do is add one diode.

True enough, but I think the detail you're leaving out is that the reason the controller can't be loaded into the mini-USB port on the top is because a USB peripheral, because of its lack of diversity in pin structure, requires driver software to operate properly. And since the PSP doesn't natively have driver software for an external controller, that just won't happen. Now, if someone were to include the necessary driver software into a custom firmware update, that'd be sweet.
