1UP's and EGM's fates to be decided very soon

Ziff Davis - Image 1

For a good while now, we've been hearing various reports and rumors about the recent sale that Ziff Davis is intending to make. Well, apparently, the whole issue is expected to be finally put to rest "in the next day or two". Normally, this would have been good news.

The element in this whole saga which has been keeping the industry at the edge of their seats is the fact that Ziff Davis owns the widely popular gaming website 1UP.com, and its offline counterpart, Electronic Gaming Monthly. One has to remember that EGM has already been churning out reviews and features since the days of the NES, while 1UP has already established itself as one of the prime resources of gaming-related news on the web, so the prospect of these being sold off by its parent company will most definitely have major implications.

At the moment, many are waiting with bated breath on how the whole deal will affect the staff of both 1UP and EGM (and along with staff comes the content, of course), what sort of changes will the public be looking forward to, and whether these changes will be for the better or otherwise. Many have fears about the outcome of the deal, especially after the Official Playstation Magazine was cancelled just last November.

In the meantime, we'll be keeping an eye out for updates on this matter, so stay tuned.

» Maybe it's a good thing

I don't know if it's the staff or something else, but I really don't like EGM. I recently got a free subscription to it, and I must say I'm really not impressed. I'm too tired to go into it (haven't slept yet) but just take it and a Game Informer and compare the two. GI has superior layout, superior writers, etc. What's up with the pink tone in EGM? Really hate that. Maybe at this point change would be good

» yeah!!!

I am the 3rd for the 1st time.

» Agreed

EGM really isn't the best choice for gaming magazines. It's too bad, but I guess since its free I can't complain.

» I like EGM

I had EGM and OPM when OPM got cancelled i got another 2 years or EGM.

» Hmm..

It's too bad because 10 years ago EGM was great. 1Up is a good source now though, I love the 1Up show, it's always on my PSP.

» probably not the best but not the worst

I think EGM was better years ago, before they moved to the bay area when they were still in chicago. The magazine was better in design and content.

how can I forget those october/november/december fatty issues. This was the only magazine that used to put that much content in just one issue, but now is over. No more fat issues just skiny ones like the other mags.

I would hate to see EGM go. I been a reader since 1993. We still got Game Informer which in my opinion got to be much better than EGM.

Who reads magazines anymore when you have the internet? We all knew this was going to happen anyway. And screw 1up, that place has to have the most Sony haters out of every gaming magazine/website ever. I'll be happy to see them go.

by Figboy - 2007-01-21 09:16
» i agree

i've been going to 1up for a while, and they are full of the most biased, non-objective "news" i've seen since, well, joystiq and kotaku.

even the positive Sony related articles are filled with smarm. the latest issue was the guy who bought a PS3, just to post a rant about how much it sucked and he hated it, and was pissed he spent $600 on it. *rolls eyes*

good riddance to them both. EGM is just as sucky. not so much because of bias (though it's there), but mainly because their writers are just...bad.

the internet has taken over print when it comes to getting your gaming news. it's faster, constantly updated (for the most part), and best of all, it's free.

well at the end of the day, i do tend to like magazines more.... knowing that i heard about all the crap in the magazine already online, but ya you need some good ol crapper material to read, i get stuff, egm, and maxim to my house, and will continue to....i sure hope nothing happens to egm...

» CRAZY!

Your all CRAZY!

EGM is far superior to that appaling Game Informer. Seriously compared to the industry knowledge of EGM, GI reads like it was written by children.

EGM is the best Video game magazine on the stand and 1up is by FAR the best video game website.

The 1up show and 1up podcast are the video game journalist highlights of my week.

The fact that several people here mentioned GI as better than EGM is insulting to real game journalists. GI is mediocre at best!

» damnit

figboy took the milky article already...but yeah, openly biased asses aren't exactly my cup of tea. however, i do enjoy the 1up podcast and there's nothing like reading egm in the john. But still...i'd love to see milky get fired...

by revolv3r - 2007-01-21 16:04
» Game Informer?

That's got to be one of the absolute worst gaming mags out there. Ugly, unnecessarily muddled layouts, writing that only a mother could love, and pandering to the EB/Gamestop consumer make this magazine the lowest rung on the 'games-journalism' ladder.

EGM has its problems, but it sure as hell beats the rest of what's out there. I'd be sad to see it go. The same thing can be said for 1UP.

You all fail to realize that the 'bias' you're talking about is contained within Editor Blogs on that site... Let me make this clear, personal blogs are like editorials-- we WANT someone's unfiltered opinion when we read those.

But their servers are super-slow, so that's kind of a problem.

» Becareful....Very careful

1UP...In its Current State....Is one of the Most Biased Sites right Next to Gamespot.

It Rights Completly Lame Articles Against the PS3 and in an Obvious Way...Like "What the Cell Going On"..It is almost Certain that it Was Hired to Advertize To Microsoft...Just Like Gamespot.

If you Try to Make a Post in Gamespot then Be careful...if you Right Something in Sony,s Favour...It will be Certainly Deleted...same for 1UP.

When the Zephyr 360 was annouced...Many Post in Gamespot Bashing Microsoft was Made....all Have Been Deleted,And they Kept what Praised MS...with Few anti-posts

This is Dangerous....Consumers Must Understand that there is Nothing such as Been unbiased...these Sites are not charities...If Someone Payz them...they Will Advertize[MS]

its a Simple Strategie......Spend Money on the Media, and Let them Make Biased Articles and Create a Negative Image on the Competitor...

If this is MS way of Winning...Then that is Disgusting

Anyone Looking For Balanced Articles....Dont Take your Info From One Site...Try Taking from Multiple-Places,and Try Using Your Brain...They Think The Reader is Stupid,But i Have Faith that Gamers Intelligence is Above Average Unlike the what is Claimed..

Remember 1UP+Gamespot [Complete BiASS]...Those 2 i Know of....and there Could Be More.

EGM should stay since it has been around since 1993 with news on SNES, Megadrive, and CDI.

Also internet will never replace magazine because you can't take it when you go away, megazines can be taken anywere, PC's can't.

by DarkGhost - 2007-01-22 19:52
» WOW

Talk about using your brain. Its "write" not "right" you idiot. Why do you have to capitalize every other letter thats really annoying. wow your pretty dumb.

EGM has been around longer than '93. I was reading it in the late '80s and it was far and away the best mag on the stand.
