Wolverine's one of the deadliest fighters ever to be dreamed up by Marvel, and his new video game sounds like its going to live up to his reputation. He has influences in God of War, Devil May Cry, and... Super Smash Bros. Well, why not? Kirby kicks butt too, you know. Says the game's project lead Dan Vondrak:

God of War was an influence. Devil May Cry, even Super Smash Bros., to a point. When we play [games like that], we just like the simplicity. Every character has their basic set of moves — that's simple. People get that, and mass market gets that, so we're making sure we bring that to Wolverine.

People are going to play Wolverine and then be annoyed with how slow other action games are. We've gone back and played highly touted action games we all love, and you're in these attacks forever. And it's not just the speed — it's the ease in which you're able to [break] out of your attacks at any time.

I like a good hack and slasher as much as the next guy - and Wolverine's gotta be the best at hacking and slashing right? - but I hope they're not banking everything on just easy and fast combos. What made God of War great was that there was a fair bit amount of brain power involved. Button mashing's the fast way to make a good game boring.

X-Men Origins: Wolverine (Xbox 360, PS3, Wii, DS, PSP) is slated to be released on May 1. Hopefully we'll see some gameplay vids sometime soon.
