Keeping his cards close to the chest, in his usual style, Phil Harrison (Sony VP of development) provided a bit of clarification about the future of the PS3 in a recent meeting attended by Tejstar of AVForums. Naturally, there was no mention of a release date, (not even a price or pre-order information) but there were specifics about a few things. Here are some excerpts from Tejstar's post detailing the meeting:
Is a hard drive going to be included in the box?
Answer: Yes.
Will there be global online play?
Answer: Yes, but only for PAL regions, the US and Japan.
(There will be an emphasis on recouping costs by using online in game advertisements)
What are the plans for PSP-PS3 wireless connectivity?
Answer: You will be able to use the PSP to stream content that is stored on the PS3Â’s hard drive, whether that be game downloads, music or video.
When will we see some games up and running?
Answer: E3
Will there be additional content to take advantage of added Blue Ray capacity?
Answer: [They were] very coy about this, they did say that they need 50GB disks for launch titles, however wouldnÂ’t comment how much of that will be used for games initially.
Among the hype, marketing and spin, a clearer picture of the PS3 is slowly emerging from the shadows. While some of the information is disappointing, like the decision to make the PS3's Blue Ray drive follow in the limited footsteps of the PS2's DVD capabilities; their decision to make the PS3 region free is welcome news. According to information coming from Tejstar's meeting, launch titles will be on 50GB Blue Ray disks (no confirmation on actual games size) and on board memory will be 512 MB, creating a very efficient ratio between the two. Sony has a history of creating great products, but they also have a record of not living up to some of their promises. With E3 around the corner Sony has an opportunity to make a statement and set the record straight.

They needed 50gb disk? This was a surprise to me. I thought 25gb disk would be plenty but if they are using 50gb disk then you can be sured games are being designed with 1080p in consideration. This also could be due to using no compression whatsoever for the best quality possible. as HDMI wont use any compression to have the best possible sound.
using gamespy technology no doubt would have advertisements involved. No surprise here.
Sweet that they will have a massive online infastructure on day one. gamespy is huge, they have their own servers and no doubt they will be hosting PS3 severs of their own for gamespy members.
Xboxlive is an ant compared to gamespy so good choice by Sony.

and it said something about the XBOX360 having a 18x ratio (9GB disks and 512 on-board memory) but the PS3 has a 98x ratio (50GB disk and 512 memory on-board).
so why is the PS3's ratio better?
(read page 5 of the forum to find out what i am talking about)

yeah, hard disk as standard has been promised since gdc at least.
what's this limited blu-ray capabitlities? what did ps2 not have that dvd players do?
it think it all sounds rather good, we're all getting a little used to the idea of ps3 now, but lets remember it's going to be a stonking games playing machine and will feature a bunch of other stuff, maybe not as much as some had hoped, but enough for me.

I'm very much interested in the conectivity between PS3 and PSP. If Sony does things right, that will give a strong push to PSP sales. They have to make every PS3 owner wanting to get a PSP.

That content distribution service for PSP is scheduled for November, as is the PS3. I think that you will be able to put your PS1 games into your PS3 and "unlock" PS1 game downloads for the PSP, as opposed to buying them.

I've been holding out on the XBOX360 just because I want to know about the connectivity between the PSP and PS3

From what we now know about plans for a PS1 emulator for PSP and PS3 I'm betting it will work as follows:
1) Use PS3 online service to buy and download PS1 game. Given the pricing of UMD movies, I am willing to bet that these will cost as much or more than they did as PS1 greatest hits games since Sony has no shame in asking people to pay full price or more for lesser quality/more restrictive to use content. Also don't expect any credit just because you already purchased the CD version of the game.
2) Use wireless connectivity, hopefully OR by swapping memory sticks, to transfer downloaded file to PSP. That's a 650MB cd over a 802.11b folks!
3) Run the game on the PSP using the emulator included in firmware 3.00+. Say goodbye to homebrew.
In summary: a service that works only for those who drop $500+ for the PS3, $200-250 for the PSP, $60+ for a 1GB+ memory stick duo, probably $20-40 for the specific game, possibly a fee to use the online service, and are willing to upgrade to the latest PSP/PS3 firmware. If true, would anyone still be interested? I'd rather just pick up a PS1/2 along with a copy of the game on CD and keep my homebrew on the road.

I don't think you'll need a PS3 to put the PS1 games on your PSP for the emulator. But it's still not good.

I hope one of these trusted sources is a source that actually has something to do with sony.
The chances that sony will allow less restrictive means of homebrew then the psp is laughable.

You do know 50 GBs is alot of space?...
I could see maybe 3 or 4 games on one. At least for the first couple of years.
But a good idea none the less.
