"They could bring out a PSP Lite" - Climax on Sony |

The last big thing we heard from Climax Studio is that they were readying themselves for next-gen. With great titles like MotoGP and ATV Offroad Fury already under their belt, it seems that Climax is indeed prepared for the challenge. Before totally focusing on its new endeavor, CEO Karl Jeffery has a few words on Sony about its revolutionary handheld."To be honest and frank about it, we worry about the future of the PSP," boldly stated Jeffery. He then went on with a rather lengthy but meaningful statement: "In terms of sales of the actual units, it's not doing so great. The DS is going gangbusters, the sales volumes are going up exponentially. But the PSP worries us, because we're sitting here thinking about what Sony is going to do to get the platform back on track and we're not hearing much from them."
Furthermore, Jeffery's statements were not thrown blindly as he suggests possible solutions for Sony. Basically, everything Jeffery would like to happen boils down to two things: redesign the handheld to create a more ergonomically appealing unit and develop a serious digital download content strategy. The CEO even went further commenting on why can't Sony come up with a "PSP Lite."
At one point, Jeffery's mood switch to being serious when asked whether publishers would soon abandon the system. "That's my instinct, yes. Maybe Sony has got something planned, but at the moment it's very worrying. It's probably the platform we're most worried about," Jeffery lamented.
Well, we know we all love the PSP, but mostly the source of that lovin' is its broad homebrew possibilities. The very same thing Sony's trying to block. Oh well...

The least thing I would want is a "PSP Light", I don't want a smaller screen.
If they released a beefed up version with two analog sticks, I would buy it instantly.
but a PSP redesign is guarenteed once Sony switches to a 65nm manufacturing process instead of the 90nm one they use now. it'll make the PSP smaller, lighter, and run longer on a single battery charge.
i sold my psp already because the psp didn't live up to the hype. as a games machine it has a lot of power, but as a portable web browser it needs a touchscreen and 32 more MB of RAM. i agree with the content distribution model he mentions too. i would like to see more internal storage and the UMD laid to rest. a console with an entirely electronically distributed content system is very futuristic and forward looking...it would make Sony look good again.
I work third shift at a hospital where the kids sleep 7 hours of the night. I would be absolutely lost without my PSP. I'm glad to see that consumers have a high standard for products being released, but come on. Homebrew aside, I still think the PSP is way ahead of it's time. I sit playing Tekken: Dark Resurrection and every round I'm in amazement they can get graphics like that one a handheld, when I wrap that up, I watch 2 or three episodes of The Soprano's, switch to an album or two, (as a photographer I have a portable portfolio with a breathtaking screen), and there it is. I made it through the night with one device. I don't even use my video ipod anymore.
It's discouraging to see so many negative comments about the PSP, not just on this forum, but in general. So when the system flops because of people like that, their going to be walking around complaining about where a suitable handheld console is? It frustrating.
did i mention a 65nm process will make the psp cheaper too?
The bottom line is that Nintendo sells more becuzz they abeal to a younger crowed. and mommies and daddy's love to buy the cheapest priced things for there youngins. the DS is cheap in price, instant hit.
The PSP not only is more powerfull and has more options, but with that comes a bigger price tag. EVERY parent knows of nintendo and buys there machines more cuzz its whats "known". and this whole TOUCHSCREEN crap, yes, its fun to mes with a screen, but what the hell does that have to do with anything? i would rather have a HACKABLE, CRACKABLE, Media Gaming system more then a single touch screen. people say "its not the quality of the machine its the quality of the games". ok, this my freind, is the biggest load of crap ever. almost all games that made it on both systems, the psp always won. Tomb Raider Legends is hitting the DS.....compare that to the PSP version. burnout legends...compare. obviously the PSP won. BUT, rpg players tend to like the DS. now, come on people, you can run all the best RPG's on the PSP that you cannot run on DS.
Ranging from the super nintendo, all the way to now the PSOne. hell, the DS cannot even play N64 games! yet the psp can and will be doing BETTER at that soon! and, with a skilled enough programer, the psp can emulate the DS! but it CANNOT be the other way around. yes, i would love to see a few DS only titles hit the PSP, but who cares? if you get bored of your PSP UMD games, fuggit, play some homebrew games, or fug that and play some of how many emulators? over 20. all almost perfectly working.

Basicly MY point is that parents buy there kids DS consoles. they come with kiddy games, touch screen, dual screen, systems made by nintendo, and mario. parents want there kids to have these things. not play grand theft auto. so if you pit up a bunch 22 year old men V.S. a bunch of parents, the parents will outbuy those men. period.
The PSP is better in EVERY way over the DS. power, OPTIONS, media, homebrew capabilities. if you rely on the RPG's and what not of the DS, you will eventually be let down, as they will get repeditive.
Nintendo DS is equivalent to a N64
PSP is equivalent to a Playstation 2 (accept PSP is faster and ps2 has better gfx)
It's mostly the the majority of poor games that make the system sell "bad", they can't sell their sh itty ported games so let's blame the system, btw sony won't allow the so called homebrew and there's no real point, ok you can almost play some old systems and create nes like stuff in lua but it's devhook and company everybody really expects...
I am really tired of these CEOs and GB fans that try to play down the PSP. The GB sells because of price, market, and fan base (parents know of Nintendo and think of it as a kid's gaming system). With that being said - there is a huge market that is not labeled a kid's market and that is where the PSP should fit in. It has more titles geared for an slightly more mature crowd.
The design of the PSP is flawless - although it could use more internal memory and a second analog stick. I would not want the screen size changed in a redesign. People are always saying the PSP is to BIG - well look at the DS it is about the same length and thicker. The DS lite is smaller, but still big. The PSP is a perfect size - it is not a GB SP (which is the only one besides a micro that can fit in your pocket). So stop it with the size crap.
Also, while homebrew is cool and pretty neat to increase your programming skills it is not the thing that keeps the PSP on the market. Come on people there is a very small population that know about homebrew and an even smaller amount that actually run it on their PSP.
P.S. Not every game that comes out is a blockbuster. Most of the games that have been coming out for all the systems are crap - only a few truely stand out and that should be taken into consideration.
P.S.S. This entire "electronic distribution" idea is crap. It would work well for stuff like the 360 does, download cars for your racing game, or download additional content for a game, but to deliver games in a downloadabled format is not a workable option. Think about it - how many games could you store on one system (even if they put a fairly big harddrive in it)? Something like that would have to grant you the ability to off load the game to your PC and then there is the problem of people copying it to disc and giving it to others or uploading it to the web.
Anyway - I thought you true PSP fans would enjoy this comment I have about this past weekend.
(Keep in mind I buy all gaming systems) - I wanted to get a PS3, but the store only have 10 - so I went to get in the Wii line and some dude is like "I hate the PSP", "it's to BIG", "I wish it had a calm shell", and "the games take forever to load". That pissed me off so I said "Yo, you do not know what you are talking about - the DS is about the same size - the calm shell is stupid and would make the PSP ugly - who cares about a touch screen? unless I can make a damn cell phone call from it - I do not see the benefit of it being on my PSP, and finally that the games that took the longest to load where the first couple of games that came out - I mean come on man - look at where it is today GTA - Vice City Stories loads quicker than GTA VC did on the PS2. Now that is a statement in its own. He didn't say anything back nor did the other 30 or so Nintendo fans in the crowd.
One last thing (if you have read all of this so far) I hate the calm shell design of the DS and everyone that says they wish the PSP had that. It is ugly and I do not want it on my PSP.

I was so amped about this game and wtf??? I have owned my PSP for 2 years and still no GT. Im sure a lot of people lost interest because of this or similar reasons. NO DMC?? cmon.. bring out some games worth buying and my PSP will be somthing other than a portable NES/SNES.

You don't have a clue of what you talking about. Since when is a 32bit 333MHz (running at 222MHz) faster than a 128bit 300MHz CPU?
Besides... I think "mommies" and "daddies" rather play on the DS than the PSP. "Only" preteens fancy the PSP since they think the DS is a kiddie machine.
I also wonder what happened with all the products and games that Sony promised us.
I still think that the PSP is a great machine, but Sony don't have a clue about how to market it... or how to make the developers support it.
When will they stop releasing old PS1 ports? I want a "real" RPG. Dungeon Siege had promise, but it's far too easy and the story is really thin. Oblivion seems to be nowhere near the Xbox 360 version, but instead based on the Nokia NGage version!
I rather play PokƩMon than the stupid hack -n- slash games on PSP. Sure, the graphics may seem childish, but it's much more polished under the surface than _ANY_ PSP RPG (I don't count old conversions).

Some guy who worked in a game store told me they had a whole back closet in gamestop filled with psp's that people returned and they couldnt get rid of. Fact is even the people who buy psp's dont want them so u cant blame it on the parents or kids, the ds might have a larger age demographic and female ratio with games like brain age and nintendogs.
and that was in a wii line I was waiting at, I also saw a bunch of ds's but I was the only one with a psp. Problem with most of the homebrew and emulators its just so buggy and like the gba emulator has so many problems and compaility issues you cant just bust that stuff out and impress them.
i think the only reason sony is not selling that many is because of the $250 price tag i know of about at least 5 people that wanted one for xmas but when there mom/dad went to the store to get one they got them a DS because it was cheaper... the psp is most definity the best handheld EVER! regardless if you can run homebrew or not... the only way i would get a DS is if someone paid me it is not that it is a bad handheld i would just get bored with it... nothing against nintendo but i don't like nintendo games they all look boreing and childish to me (well most of them... i was always a sonic fan not a mario fan)... so maybe if they lower the price (it is not like they are loosing $250 on each console like the PS3) they will sell more
