Sony's Ray Maguire: we were all about functionality, now we're all about games |

It wasn't that long ago when the PlayStation 3's game library wasn't
anything more than attacking the weak point of giant crabs for massive
damage. Back then, Sony kept plugging the console's functionality, but now that they actually have a proper amount of games to be proud of, they're all about the games. Says SCE UK boss Ray Maguire:
When we first started - because all the functionality [on the PS3] was radical - we talked about that functionality, and in doing that, maybe we weren't strong enough on the games side of it.
Now, with the strength of the games we've got coming out, this Christmas we're definitely about the games. From our own first party, and also third party, there's a feast of games for PS3 this year.
Maguire has expressed the same confidence in the PS3's game library before, saying that it's large enough that devs will be able to see it as the leading console for multiplatform development. That doesn't mean that they're going to drop their marketing on functionality though. In fact, they're aiming to work harder on marketing PS3-PSP interconnectivity:
Because we've been out for a couple of years now, people are starting to understand and discover the functionality of things like PlayTV, and that's created the desire for people to upgrade to larger hard disk sizes.
[...] I think people are starting to come to grips with that, but what's probably lesser known is the relationship between PS3 and PSP and the Remote Play functionality.
Those are the things we have to work a little bit harder on - the GPS functionality, the camera functionality - all of those elements which of course give us content to sit on the PS3

but by admitting that their focus prior to this year wasn't on gaming, but rather functionality,
is still like a slap to the face to the gamer.
it's like sony saying, "I know it's been a long wait, but we finally give a damn!"
not cool. sonys 600 dollar "gaming console"gaming should very damned well have been focused on gaming from the beginning,
l know sony is turning things around and all, (but a two year dry spell,!!) is unforgivable for any console, for any reason,!!
I will get past that dryspell,.... but I most definitely wont look back on it and laugh......
something like that should never happen again, a console developer should be more considerate tword those willing to make the investment........

Now that Sony has realized that they're flushing too much money down the toilet by having all of this extra functionality (4 USB ports, Compact Flash, SD, Memory Stick, Emotion Engine, etc.) people are wondering what hell is going on. Personally I have a US 60GB model that I spent $599 on and I use all that extra functionality on a semi-regular basis, but I would gladly have given it up for some major titles because the first year and a half was the slowest and most boring of all. Sometimes I had to resort to running emulators on Linux just to give me a reason to turn on my PS3 with one exception for playing Blu-Ray movies.
With all the extra functionality gone or most of it, then comes the complaining. So what if Sony removed it! At least now the PS3 is almost half of the price it used to be and now there are many more high quality titles to select from. It's a give and take world folks. Sometimes it's best to chance getting the first generation release. At least with Sony products.

By the way, Gears 2's online is terribly glitched and more of a downgrade when you compare it to the first which was mediocore as well. I liked the blue print, but the presentation was rushed, causing the game to decieve it's hype. Reviewers will NEVER admit this flaw.
Then there's the greedy Micrsoft decision to make the 360 featureless if you don't pay for LIVE, and then a wifi addon on top of that.
But wait, it doesn't stop there. In one year you have spent 116.99 on batteries for the controller and a year of LIVE, per every year that you own a 360. So much for 360 is cheaper. It's a bait and switch deal. Not to mention that HD-DVD addon they tried to pull off. Yeah, they love to con and then run out on you.
So in the long run, you've spent more on a 360 than a PS3 which has better functionality and a bigger library of exclusives and Triple-A titles. You're never going to have your first 360, so you'll never have a working 360 when it's no longer in production to be replaced, which seems like it will be happening pretty soon. The small selection of exclusives which are often dosed up to the eyeball on hype from payed off reviewers and an ignrant fanbase, doesn't do the gamer any good. More and more people are going PS3 and never looking back. Functionality is a major priotrity. It determines whether or not you're getting reliablity and if the juice is worth the squeeze.
Now, the flamebait has been set. This comment wont last a good rating as long as xbots can't admit that there console is far from perfect.
